“Definitely the most challenging thing I’ve had to do thus far as an actor, a lot of mental gymnastics involved,” Jharrel Jerome admits about the uniqueness of his role in the Boots Riley-created absurdist series I’m A Virgo, on which he plays a previously extremely sheltered 13-foot-tall Oakland teen. “At no point do I look my scene partners in the eye, and as an actor that’s so critical, you know, as connection.”
Jerome, an Emmy winner for When They See Us, was joined by Riley and co-stars Olivia Washington and Walton Goggins, plus costume designer Deirdra E. Govan, for a conversation about their series at Deadline Studio at Prime Experience.

Despite Fallout taking place in the aftermath of a nuclear war, it’s truly not the end of the world for the Prime Video series, which has many miles to go.
Fans of video games are fanatics about how faithfully adapted into movies and series, and according to Fallout executive producer Geneva Robertson-Dworet, speaking recently during an interview with cast and creatives at Deadline Studio at Prime Experience, “there is so much we had to leave behind” in Season 1. “[There’s] potentially thousands of hours of gameplay; we have eight hours to tell our story.”
Watch the interview here and see photos from the event below.
With a Season 2 order under its belt, as well as becoming the most watched Amazon Prime series launch ever per Nielsen with 2.9 billion minutes viewed, Robertson-Dworet says they’ll now “be able to get to so much more that we love about the Fallout world.”

The cast and producers of Red, White & Royal Blue — Prime Video’s breakout movie based on the bestselling novel by Casey McQuiston — acknowledge there is a fantastical element to their hit rom-com that stars Uma Thurman, Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez: A female U.S. president. A gay prince from across the pond who falls head over heals with her bisexual Mexican-American son. A delicious wrestling match between the two men in a mound of wedding cake.
But such a fantasy — besides charming the heck out of Gen Z viewers who love a good romance — could stand to make a difference in this otherwise contentious election year.
“Sometimes you don’t get the fantasy of Uma Thurman as president, but the reality of the choice that you’re facing is enormous and will affect your life and the life of a lot of disenfranchised and disadvantaged people,...

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are forces to be reckoned with together in Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith. But when they have to face off against each other, things really heat up.
Created by Glover and Francesca Sloane — the two previously collaborated on the hit FX series Atlanta — Mr. and Mrs. Smith follows two strangers who are paired as a married couple as they both begin new careers as spies. Known as John and Jane Smith, they are forced to get close to one another as they face the world’s criminal underbelly together. Throughout the eight-episode series, Glover and Erskine are part of this delicate dance between strangers, not knowing how close one can get or if they can trust one another. As their bond grows, they evolve into a butt-kicking duo who eventually fall in love and, as always, that’s when the stakes are highest.

For Jenny Slate, there’s much to love about working as a stand-up comic today.
“We have the opportunity to be really thoughtful about saying something deeply important about our own personal development, about the world at large, about current events, about censorship in art, about what is the current vernacular in art,” the comedian says.
Certainly, she acknowledges, “cancel culture is frightening,” and it’s always “scary to be a person with a microphone, [but] it’s also a great privilege. If you’re a performer and you feel that you’re talented, if you pair that talent with thoughtfulness, I think [it’s a] great opportunity to feel fully expressed.”
On Monday night, Slate was at Deadline’s Studio at the Prime Experience to promote her latest special Seasoned Professional, which debuted on Prime Video on February 23. Also appearing for solo interviews were comedians Tig Notaro and Jim Gaffigan, who while discussing...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of the first episode of HBO’s limited series The Sympathizer, which premiered on April 14.
“All right, see you stateside,” says Robert Downey Jr’s Claude quips with some gallows humor to Hoa Xuande’s The Captain near the end of the first episode of HBO’s The Sympathizer as communist North Vietnamese forces bombard soon-to-fall Saigon in 1975.
If the slippery CIA officer was the only role Oscar winner Downey portrays in the multi-genre adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer-winning novel, it would capture a lot of attention on or off cable. However, Downey plays several characters in multicultural and multinational The Sympathizer from showrunners Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar as the action moves from the dying days of the American War, as it is known in Southeast Asia, to Southern California and back again.

When Scott Stuber arrived at Netflix in 2017, some of its biggest films to date were the Idris Elba drama “Beasts of No Nation,” the Adam Sandler comedy “Sandy Wexler,” or the Will Smith fantasy action film “Bright.” Some were hits or got some awards buzz, and sure they had new films by Noah Baumbach and Angelina Jolie, but Netflix at that time was still getting booed at the Cannes Film Festival for releasing Bong Joon-Ho’s “Okja.”
Under Stuber’s watch, that all changed. Netflix would be the place where Martin Scorsese, Bradley Cooper, Alfonso Cuarón, Jane Campion, and more would want to make their passion projects. It was the place The Rock, the Russo Brothers, Zack Snyder, and Shawn Levy took their tentpoles to make some of the streamer’s biggest hits to date. Former Gilmore Girls and This is Us star Milo Ventimiglia shocked the world when his team confirmed he is officially a married man. Ventimiglia, known as something of a serial monogamist due to several long-term relationships, married his love, Jarah Mariano, earlier this year. Do you know who Milo Ventimiglia dated before tying the knot? He’s had a few high-profile romances and a couple more low-key ones.
Milo Ventimiglia dated Alexis Bledel during his time on ‘Gilmore Girls’
Milo Ventimiglia’s breakout role came on Gilmore Girls in the early 2000s when he played bad boy Jess Mariano (the irony is not lost on us). His character dated Rory Gilmore during season 3 of the series, and he returned to reprise his role in Gilmore Girl: A Year in the Life. On-screen romance wasn’t all there was between Ventimiglia and his co-star, Alexis Bledel.

Filming Joker may not be an experience Robert De Niro and Joaquin Phoenix look back on fondly. At least when it comes to the dynamic between the two of them. The actors clashed on the set of the 2019 film. Not about the storyline or a simple case of differing personalities. Rather, their conflicting approaches to filming.
Friction between Phoenix and De Niro happened because of a read-through
As Joker director Todd Phillips told Vanity Fair, a problem came up almost immediately as a result of Phoenix and De Niro’s acting methods. De Niro, he explained, liked doing read-throughs of the script from cover to cover prior to shooting. Whereas Phoenix adopted a looser, “let it happen” method.
It all started when Phillips got a call from De Niro asking him to relay a message to Phoenix. “Bob called me, and he goes, ‘Tell him he’s an actor and...

Update 4:30 Pm Et Sept. 29: Outfest’s board of directors has informed Queer Filmmakers United (Qfu), the group of employees that this week voted to unionize, that it will voluntarily recognize the new union, avoiding a formal election with the National Labor Relations Board.
The news follows the organization laying off five staff members, all of whom were part of Qfu, two days after they had announced their intention to unionize. The layoffs are still in effect.
Outfest is maintaining that the staff reductions are due to “financial hardship” and that the non-profit will have other temporary reductions to programs, administration, and staff.
“I am proud to report that Outfest’s Board of Directors has enthusiastically voted today to recognize Queer Filmworkers United as a union representing our staff. Matt Damon is spilling the details of his onscreen kisses. On July 19, Damon revealed that a seemingly romantic kiss with Scarlett Johansson quickly turned awkward when he caught a whiff of his costar's onion breath. The actors were filming their heartwarming 2011 family drama "We Bought a Zoo" when the apparent incident took place. "What happened was, we did a shot before lunch, and it was this nice little two-shot that ended in the kiss," Damon told Emily Blunt during a LADbible TV interview. "And it was really good. And we went to lunch, and she and I both thought it was over, but it wasn't."
"She goes, 'Oh sh*t! I literally just had an onion sandwich!'"
When Johansson and Damon returned from lunch, producers asked them to film more close-up scenes. The unexpected request resulted in a slightly mortifying realization for Johansson.

When Johansson and Damon returned from lunch, producers asked them to film more close-up scenes. The unexpected request resulted in a slightly mortifying realization for Johansson.

It’s Day 1 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 74 of the WGA strike.
The stars are out in force on the first day of the actors strike and, as Parks and Recreation co-creator Mike Schur said, “Now a thousand very attractive people have shown up and joined the lines, it’s an enormous amount of wind in our sails”.
Schur, a member of the WGA negotiating committee who also starred as Mose Schrute on The Office, was joined by a slew of big-name actors including Allison Janney, Timothy Olyphant, Josh Gad, Ben Schwartz, Sean Astin, Charlie Barnett, Joey King, Chloe Fineman, Susan Sarandon, Ginnifer Goodwin, Patton Oswalt, Marg Helgenberger, Jake McDorman, Constance Zimmer, Michelle Hurd and Jason Sudeikis across picket lines in LA and New York.
Skye P. Marshall, who is a lead on CBS’ upcoming reboot of Matlock alongside Kathy Bates, told Deadline that the actors’ craft needs to be respected.

Ryan Gosling is embracing the Barbie aesthetic in a big way. The handsome star rocked a Mattel-influenced pastel pink at the Barbie premiere on Sunday — along with a very special, subtle tribute to his ladylove, Eva Mendes.
Gosling donned a pink suit and white button-down while walking the pink carpet at the premiere of the long-awaited Barbie movie — held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles on Sunday — and he spoke with Et’s Will Marfuggi about his role in the project, and his unique ensemble.
According to Gosling, the suit wasn’t a tribute to Barbie directly, but rather a product of playing Ken in the film. Gosling simply explained, “I just like pink now.”

After nearly 75 years of family ownership, Gersh Agency has sold a 45% stake in the company to private equity firm Crestview Partners.
Gersh Agency chiefs Bob Gersh and David Gersh said the investment from Crestview is designed to help the agency grow in new areas to better represent its core client base. The deal calls for the brothers to continue to stay at the helm. Leslie Siebert, Gersh Agency veteran who has long served as managing partner, has been promoted to co-president status alongside Bob and David Gersh.
Gersh Agency’s sale comes as all of its major talent agency competitors have brought in additional partners and investors to help provide much-needed resources and financial support for a notoriously volatile business. The brothers assert they will maintain control even as they bring in capital from Crestview. In 2019, Crestview Partners acquired a one-third stake in ICM Partners for about $150 million — a deal...

For many die-hard It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans, it was disappointing to discover that Hulu (Netflix in the UK) has removed many of the episodes from their platform. Five episodes of the boundary-pushing satirical comedy show have been removed from the streaming services. For fans looking to watch the banned episodes, here’s how to find them.

The Gang comprises five raging alcoholic narcissists, Dee Reynolds, Dennis Reynolds, Frank Reynolds, Mac (Ronald MacDonald), and Charlie Kelly, who run a failing Irish pub in a fictionalized South Philadelphia. The Gang’s search for money, fame, or sex often leads them into sticky situations that frequently blow up in their faces — both figuratively and literally.

From “All Quiet on the Western Front” sparking tears for Colin Farrell to “Triangle of Sadness” making Brian Tyree Henry laugh so hard he cried, this year’s Oscar hopefuls spoke with Variety‘s senior culture and events editor Marc Malkin at the annual nominee luncheon about which film most recently brought them to tears.
For Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), he said that he was “destroyed” by “All Quiet On the Western Front.” “It’s a beautiful and powerful and important film,” he said. “It’s painfully relevant today, shockingly and shamefully relevant.”
“I teared up watching Adam Sandler in ‘Hustle,’ trying to convince this guy that he needs to play better basketball or get out and how passionate he was,” said Brandan Fraser (“The Whale”). “I’m a softie, I tear up during ‘Ratatouille.'”

As Hollywood crawls toward some version of normalcy amid the coronavirus pandemic, we at Variety have been curious about how the day-to-day work of film and television production would resume. After an invitation from two indie film producers — Maurice Fadida and Eric B. Fleischman — to visit the set of “The Knocking,” I was able to observe the meticulous new protocols in action.
It’s a slog, the business of keeping people protected in a highly tactile and collaborative environment, especially for independent filmmakers. The producers estimated that safety measures cost as much as 10% of their production budget, and resulted in additional shooting days. The first time Zoe Saldana saw the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where on May 3 she’ll be awarded her own plaque, the ground moved. Saldana, then a 20-year-old ballerina from Queens, was visiting Los Angeles with a theater troupe of kids from all five boroughs who wrote and performed skits about guns and gangs. At 1 a.m., they slipped out of their hotel to see the stars.
“We were inner-city kids and obviously you’re looking for, like, Arnold Schwarzenegger,” laughs Saldana from her now-permanent home in L.A. on an early morning when, for once, she’s not on set. They walked the streets for two hours talking about their futures.
“‘Oh my God, we’re here! Our dreams are possible!” beams Saldana, “and then, ‘What was that!?’” An earthquake.
“I’m a first-generation Latino and part of my culture is super superstitious. We rely on signs,” says Saldana.

Inside Farmshop, an overcrowded, overloud Santa Monica, California, artisanal-type-food joint, the 20-year-old Bill Hader is giving the 39-year-old Bill Hader a pretty good goddamn dressing down. "Fucking loser," the younger spits at one point. But does grown-up Bill take umbrage? Does he rail at his interior monologue, trying to scare it back into the depths of his psyche? He does not. Sitting there – regular jeans, dark blue sweater, very California casual, fork in hand, knife bearing down on steak – he just laughs, shakes his head, arches his grand Hader eyebrows,...
