The Clown Prince of Crime and the Mistress of Evil will duke it out at the box office for the No. 1 spot this weekend, with “Joker” estimated to take in about $19 million in its fourth weekend while “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is projected to earn about $18.3 million in its second frame.
“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” took in about $4.82 million on Friday while “Joker” yielded $5.4 million, hinting that “Joker” may end up the winner.
The gritty drama starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role has so far totaled $258 million domestically for Warner Bros. with an additional $512 million overseas. Todd Philipps directed “Joker,” which garnered controversy ahead of its release for its sympathetic depiction of the villain, from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver. Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, and Frances Conroy also star. It recently passed “Deadpool 2” as the highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide, and should surpass $800 million this weekend.

“Black and Blue,” Screen Gems’ cop thriller starring Naomie Harris, made $675,000 at the box office in Thursday night previews from 1,962 locations. The film opens at over 2000 theaters this weekend.
“Black and Blue” faces off against the STXfilms horror movie “Countdown” and “The Current War: Director’s Cut,” the Thomas Edison biopic which 101 Studios is putting out two years removed from its initial premiere at Toronto in the wake of the Weinstein Company shuttering. “Countdown” earned $515,000 in its preview showing from approximately 2,150 theaters, and “The Current War” did not open in Thursday night previews.
“Black and Blue” and “Countdown” are both projected to open in the $8-9 million range, with estimates topping out at $11 million. Screen Gems is predicting a $6 million opening for the cop film against a $12 million budget. This summer, Screen Gems’ “The Intruder” made $865,000 in previews and opened to $10.8 million against an $8 million budget.

It takes almost half the film to figure out if Justin Dec’s directorial debut, “Countdown,” is seriously being serious. The film aspires to belong in the small but noteworthy horror subgenre about killer curses, right alongside Jacques Tourneur’s “Night of the Demon” and Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me To Hell,” but this time it’s about a killer cell phone app. Yes, really.
The titular “Countdown” app is very simple: you download it to your phone, and it gives you a countdown that reveals when you’re going to die. Most people find out they’ve got decades left to live and go on about their days. But some people find out they’ve only got a few days, or even hours, so they freak out and try to change their destiny.
That’s when the demons come after you — when nobody’s looking, of course, and only in spooky hallways and bathrooms.

In an exclusive Countdown clip, check out what happens when you download an app that will tell you the exact second you die.
It seems every day there’s a new app getting hyped, whether you want to hear about it or not. The newest swipe right for dating, another one to monitor your health, and if you want to catch ghosts around the neighborhood while listening to Oingo Boingo music, there’s an app for that too. But with all technological developments, there’s a certain paranoia that sets in about where this is taking us as a society—and anxiety makes for fertile horror movie stomping grounds.
Thus enters Countdown, STXfilms’ newest horror chiller in which a mysterious new app becomes all the rage with youths who will use it until the day they die. Which might be sooner than they expect. Aptly titled “Countdown,...

Even the lowly jump scare can be a source of pleasure. But at its most mechanical, this least imaginative of stock devices in current horror cinema elicits less fright than annoyance — rather like a repetitive, low-level electric shock, one just potent enough to rate as an irritant.
Ninety minutes of that feeling adds up to “Countdown,” a bombastically dumb new chiller that probably would have been called “Killer App” if that title hadn’t already been used several times. That doesn’t stop every other idea here from being well-worn, and it likely won’t stop writer-director Justin Dec’s debut feature from pulling in moderately decent returns as it opens the weekend before Halloween. But .

Look, I’ll be the first to admit that while I generally go into every movie with a positive attitude, there is the cynical old fuddy-duddy inside of me that will still be dismissive towards certain films, sight unseen. It’s one of my many shortcomings, I know, and one that I’ve been actively working on the last few years, but I still can’t help but to succumb to the snark that sometimes resides inside of my head.
That being said, I was prepared for Countdown to be your prototypical 2010s teen-centric supernatural flick where I’d be rooting against the film’s protagonists. But instead, writer/director Justin Dec delivers up a clever dose of death-defying fun in Countdown that feels like an updated spin on Final Destination, all while still doing its own thing with its rules and mythology, and gives us characters worth investing in as well.

There are many things no one should do in a horror movie if they want to live — run back inside the house that holds the killer, have sex, play that haunted video tape, the list goes on — including a classic ripe for contemporary reinvention: Don’t play that weirdo parlor game. Bloody Mary is a bad idea, so is the Ouija board, and Light As a Feather Stiff As a Board has never led to anything good. Why not move that concept into a more modern space? Films about killer smartphones are hardly anything new, from “One Missed Call” to “Cell,” Skype-based offshoots like “Unfriended,” and even the forgettable “Jexi,” which came out in theaters mere weeks ago. But what about a movie about a killer app? “Countdown” fills that questionable void.

Hitting theaters this weekend is Countdown, from writer/director Justin Dec. The film’s story is centered around a nurse (Elizabeth Lail) who comes across a mysterious app that can somehow predict your death, and when she realizes that her time is almost up, it’s a race against the clock to find a way to stop death from claiming her as its latest victim.
Daily Dead had the chance to speak with the first-time feature filmmaker this week, and Dec discussed what inspired the story to Countdown and how he transitioned from making shorts to features, and why he feels like it’s important for any aspiring directors out there to continue to better themselves as storytellers through short-form filmmaking. Dec also talked about the cast of Countdown and his experiences collaborating with Howard Berger and the team at Knb Efx Group when it came time to create the movie’s monstrous being.

Studios like to avoid Halloween weekend; audiences tend to prefer trick-or-treating to theaters. Even horror titles like to open the week before with “Zombieland: Double Tap” this year, “Halloween” last. So while three wide releases debut this weekend — “Countdown,” “Black and Blue,” and “A Current War” — none should gross much more than $10 million, or break into the top three.
However, this pre-Halloween weekend is being used to test a new paradigm: Musicians-turned-directors who use movies to promote their new albums. Bruce Springsteen co-directed “Western Stars,” in which he portrays a B-movie actor looking back on his career. Fathom Events will host showings October 23, followed by screenings in more than 500 theaters nationwide.
Kanye West, true to form, is pushing the envelope even further with “Jesus Is King.” Featuring music from his long-delayed new album, West filmed his famed Sunday service in a James Turrell outdoor installation in Painted Desert, Ariz.

The final weekend of October will be a quiet one at the box office. Between the release of “Zombieland” and “Maleficent” sequels last weekend, the continued success of “Joker,” and a crowded November release slate starting with a new “Terminator,” the major studios are mostly sitting out of this weekend.
But one film that will be released wide this Friday comes with a very long and turbulent road to theaters. “The Current War,” Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s biopic about the corporate battle over America’s first electric grid, will finally be released after it was dropped by the now-defunct Weinstein Company.
“The Current War” was originally set for release in November 2017 after receiving poor reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival, but was pulled from release after Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault accusations came to light. “Death? There’s An App For That.”
If there was an app that could predict the exact time you were going to die would you download it? Well, in the upcoming horror thriller Countdown, a young woman downloads the app only to learn that she is going to die in three days.
The story follow a young nurse (Elizabeth Lail) who “downloads an app that claims to predict exactly when a person is going to die, it tells her she only has three days to live. With time ticking away and death closing in, she must find a way to save her life before time runs out.”
This definitely looks like a silly horror movie, but it still could be a fun and entertaining movie! It’s kind of a mix of elements from other horror films like the Final Destination films, The Ring, and Happy Death Day. I’ll watch the movie!

"All we need to do is beat the clock by one second." Stx Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for a psychological horror thriller titled Countdown, opening in theaters the weekend just before Halloween. The concept involves a killer app that claims to predict exactly when a person is going to die. A young nurse downloads the app, and it tells her she only has three days to live... But she also feels a mysterious figure haunting her. The movie stars Elizabeth Lail, Jordan Calloway, Talitha Bateman, Tichina Arnold, P.J. Byrne, and Peter Facinelli. This looks way too cheesy to be taken seriously, with all the usual tropes and horror cliches. Plus, that priest guy is really the worst. Might as well skip it, there's nothing to see here. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Justin Dec's Countdown, direct from Stx's YouTube: In Countdown, when a...

There are phone apps for everything these days, like telling you when to exercise and reminding you to keep hydrated. Well, how about an app where it will tell you when you’ll die? It doesn’t seem like an app that would sell well but that is what “Countdown” focuses on.
The film is directed and written by Justin Dec, whose previous work includes “Rolling,” which won him the Best Director Award at the 2010 New York Television Festival.

STXinternational today made its second-ever appearance on stage at CineEurope, repped by John Friedberg and Llewellyn Radley who were respectively promoted to President of International and Managing Director, UK & Evp International earlier this year. The pair presented a roster of upcoming titles that includes Chadwick Boseman-starrer 21 Bridges, horror thriller Countdown, the Jennifer Lopez-fronted Hustlers and Dave Bautista action comedy My Spy.
The latter got the most extensive look-in with a video introduction from Bautista who winked that the movie has it all, including an “immensely sexy, super-buff and undeniably charismatic lead.” In April, Bautista had told CinemaCon attendees this was the first time he was “fully hands on as a producer.” The Peter Segal-helmed pic, which also stars Kristen Schaal and Big Little Lies‘ Chloe Coleman, follows a hardened CIA operative who has been sent to surveil the family of a precocious 9-year-old girl. Several scenes were...

Here's a hysterically fun comedy short that features a couple of executives pitching the next big CG animated film called Boats. Everyone gets overly excited about the possibilities of how much money they will make from the movie, that they skip the most important part of the filmmaking aspect, and that's coming up with a story. It's a satire on how Hollywood typically works. There is one voice of reason in the room, but no one seems to understand why he doesn't get what they are trying to accomplish.
Hot off the success of "Cars" and "Planes," a room full of executives dreams up the next big thing... "Boats"! But is it the story they care about or is it $omething el$$$e...?
The short was written, directed, and edited by Justin Dec, and it stars Jim O'Heir (Parks & Recreation), Kevin Wu, Taylor Miller (Magic City), Denver Milord (Jack Reacher), and Clancy McLain.
