"Want a little advice, homie? Make a move. Any move." Paramount has revealed the trailer for a comedy titled Snack Shack, a 90s throwback coming-of-age adventure about two best friends get the chance to run the swimming pool snack shack. This is the next new movie from the same filmmaker who made the punk romcom cult hit Dinner in America a few years ago. The two affable screw-ups decide to invest in a poolside Snack Shack in an effort to make some quick cash and strike it rich. However, the pair gets sidetracked by a beautiful and effortlessly cool lifeguard named Brooke, and their own propensity for getting into trouble. It's described as "a nostalgic journey for those who came of age before the era of cell phones, and a hilarious escape for those who wish they had." This stars Conor Sherry & Gabriel Labelle as Aj & Moose, with Mika Abdalla as Brooke,...

Voyage to the Stars is a bonafide podcast phenomenon starring Colton Dunn (Superstore), Felicia Day (Supernatural), Janet Varney (Legend of Korra), Kirsten Vangsness (Criminal Minds), and Steve Berg (Drunk History)! With 2.5 million downloads in its debut year and over 100,000 viewers on Twitch, the wild sci-fi podcast is now available in comic form… I’ll be honest, I had never even heard of the podcast on which this comic is based but seeing the name Felicia Day attached usually is a sign that I’ll enjoy the product; and that’s certainly the case here.
The plot here is pretty simple. Earth is gone and only one intrepid crew of misfits managed to escape. A crew who is now determined and ambiguously destined to stop a growing, ancient evil from consuming the universe.

Where’s the Dude when you need him? Bowling alley-set directorial debut would score with more laughs and more feeling
Straight out of film school, aged 22, while her peers were off interning, Kendall Goldberg directed her feature debut, this offbeat, earnest movie about a quarter-life crisis (released in the US in 2018). That’s an undeniably impressive achievement, and the film has some interesting ideas about overparenting and how grown-up kids can buckle under the pressure of Mum and Dad’s expectations. But otherwise it feels a bit generic – shuffling the pack of quirky indie movie cliches, not quite funny enough to be a comedy but with too little authentic emotion to work as drama.
Jon Heder plays Jeff, the manager of Winky’s World, a bowling alley so poorly maintained that it’s acquired a kind of retro-chic. Jeff is an underachiever, a computer science graduate who takes medication for depression and anxiety.

Jon Heder, who is best known for his role in Napoleon Dynamite, stars in a new film coming out called When Jeff Tried To Save The World. The thing is, he’s not literally trying to save the world. He’s trying to save the bowling alley that he manages called Winky’s World from closing down.
It actually looks like a charming indie comedy that some audiences might enjoy, especially if you’re a fan of Heder. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen him in anything, and this looks like a good role that fits his style.
Here’s the synopsis:
Jeff (Jon Heder) is the manager of an old-school bowling alley called Winky's World. Everyday he is the first to arrive and the last to leave. He has memorized the shoe sizes of community regulars and the quirks of his fellow employees. Routine is Jeff’s middle name,...

"Does anyone other than me know you work at a bowling alley?" It's yet another edition of Indie Trailer Sunday. FilmBuff has debuted the first official trailer for When Jeff Tried to Save the World, an indie comedy about a bowling alley manager who decides to get involved in saving the place when it's about to be sold. The title is a fun play on the "save the world" idea because the name of the place he works is Winky's World and he wants to save it. Jon Heder (who played Napoleon in Napoleon Dynamite) stars as Jeff, with a full cast including Candi Milo, Jim O'Heir, Anna Konkle, Maya Erskine, Brendan Meyer, Steve Berg, and Richard Esteras. This looks quirky and low key entertaining, which should be an inspiring and refreshing break from all the Hollywood blockbusters this holiday season. Plus it's nice to see Heder again. Here's the...

Joe Swanberg has had one of the more interesting career upswings of any independent filmmaker out there. After being one of the essential founders of the mumblecore indie movement, he made a right turn of sorts a few years back. Opting for bigger stars and similarly simple premises, he’s found more acclaim than ever before. Between Drinking Buddies, Happy Christmas, and Digging for Fire, Swanberg is as exciting a writer/director as ever before. Most recently, Swanberg has teamed up again with frequent collaborator Jake Johnson for Win It All, a film that at once feels both different and similar than what he’s been up to lately. Above all else, it’s a great vehicle for Johnson, who does his best work when paired with Swanberg. The flick is a character study, centered on gambler Eddie Garrett (Johnson). He’s broke, but charming. A nice guy unable to resist a card game,...

During Comedy Central's Drunk History panel at Comic-Con yesterday, Derek Waters announced that Miranda will be in season four to — surprise, surprise — drunkenly narrate the rivalry between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Sure, it's not the same as getting a ticket to Hamilton but a drunk Miranda is sure to make things much funnier than the Broadway show. Comedy Central also announced an impressive roster of guest stars that will show up in the fourth season: Billie Joe Armstrong, Steve Berg, Rachel Bilson, Michael Cera, Josh Charles, Kat Dennings, Ben Folds, Dave Grohl, Tony Hale, Ed Helms, Thomas Middleditch, Elizabeth Olsen, Aubrey Plaza, Ronda Rousey, Liev Schreiber, Alia Shawkat, and Duncan Trussell. “Have I ever told you the story about the time I tried to find a dead body?”
Sounds like an ear catching anecdote, but in reality that’s the line that started Jake Johnson (New Girl, Jurassic World) and Joe Swanberg (Drinking Buddies, Happy Christmas) down the road which eventually led to Digging for Fire, a film that garnered a 2015 Sundance Film Festival premiere. Jake Johnson and costar Steve Berg (Drunk History, Skinwalker Ranch) have been on tour promoting the film with several Q & A’s across the country. Last Friday they brought their wit and a pitcher of beer to the front of the screen at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX.

Park City, Utah – There are still some films to be discussed in my Sundance coverage. Here’s write-ups of “Digging for Fire,” “Entertainment,” and “Results,” which featured the return of festival-approved directors, albeit heading in different directions.
At this year’s festival, two maestros of the ol’ mumblecore days stepped into the big-time spotlight with their new films that boasted their biggest casts and fanciest films yet. The first to show was Joe Swanberg, who has gone from super low-key directing to hosting a celebrity party this side of “This is the End” in “Digging For Fire.” The other is Andrew Bujalski, whose previous films were nerd alerts like “Mutual Appreciation” and most recently “Computer Chess.”
In a reverse course is Rick Alverson’s “Entertainment,” which doesn’t start modestly but attempt to reach a wide audience, but starts with a big promise to reach a very specific audience. An explanation on that below.

Joe Swanberg is 33. I don't know whether to be amazed by how high or low that number is. On one hand, that's ridiculously young for a filmmaker who broke out back in 2006 and 2007 with "Lol" and "Hannah Takes The Stairs" and has been absurdly prolific since then. On the other hand, though, the filmmaker who made his name -- and, depending on your generosity, made a genre -- chronicling the dramatically limited foibles of recent college graduates has reached the "thirtysomething" phase of his career. The erratic and misdirected youths at the center of Swanberg's earlier films have become the pesky nubiles who show up to make Swanberg's new leads feel either old or optimistically mature. It's a transition that has been in the works for a little while. Last year's Swanberg Sundance entry "Happy Christmas" featured the director and Melanie Lynskey as a grown-up, responsible couple whose house nearly...

Reports ranged from UFO sightings to livestock mutilation, but maybe most notable was the disappearance of ranch owner Hoyt Miller’s eight year old son, Cody on November 11, 2010. Close to a year later, Modern Defense Enterprises (Mde) has sent a team of experts to document and investigates the mysterious occurrences, which only escalate upon their arrival.

Check out both the red and green band trailers, a clip, the poster and images for Skinwalker Ranch starring Jon Gries, Kyle Davis and Erin Cahill, as well as Devin McGinn, Matthew Rocheleau and Steve Berg. The R-rated horror opens October 30th and is helmed by Devin McGinn from the writing by Adam Ohler. Judging from what I saw in the red band version I saw, this looks creepy and certainly warrants a view; which is more than I can say for some of the stuff floating around the big budget and indie film stream at this point. We are happy to debut the red-band trailer for the awesome-looking supernatural thriller, Skinwalker Ranch! For those of you not familiar with the film yet, it was inspired by an actual location in Utah known for its unexplained paranormal phenomena. I'm not the biggest fan of found footage films, but this one looks like it will deliver some intense entertainment.
I'm very familiar with Skinwalker Ranch, and I've heard and read a lot of stories about the location over the years. I was wondering when someone would actually get around to making a film based on it, and here it is! I've mentioned before that my brother actually snuck onto the grounds and saw some pretty crazy stuff. It's definitely a good setting for a movie, and some great concepts were used in this movie.

I've been fascinated by this Skinwalker Ranch since I first heard about it a few years ago. It's an actual place in Utah that is known for having a ton of paranormal activity. It was only a matter of time before someone was inspired to make a movie about it. The stuff I've heard about the place is a lot more interesting than this film will end up being, though. My brother and some friends actually snuck onto the property at one point and saw a few crazy things of their own.
The movie was made in the found footage style, and it's based on a few of the legends from the area. Today we have a poster, clip, and some viral videos talking about Skinwalker Ranch and what it is.
