Sean Baker’s “Anora” is betting big with a fall release date.
The feature, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024, will be released October 18 from Neon, IndieWire can confirm. The limited release window makes “Anora” primed for the fall festival circuit, with possible inclusions at Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF, which concludes right before “Anora” will hit theaters.
“Anora” stars “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” breakout Mikey Madison as an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). Writer/director Baker previously helmed Oscar-nominated film “The Florida Project,” groundbreaking iPhone movie “Tangerine,” and Simon Rex’s career-best “Red Rocket.”
The release of “Anora” on October 18 proves that Neon has high hopes for the Palme d’Or winner. Neon has released a trio of Palme d’Or winners before, all in October and all going on to be Oscar-nominated.

Although the current state of the "Scream" franchise is a giant mess, it's worth remembering that merely a few years ago, its future seemed as bright as ever. 2022's "Scream" was a clear-cut hit at the box office, and it successfully introduced a whole new generation of characters who could be chased around with a knife for many installments to come. "Scream 5" not only did all this while keeping Sidney and Gale in the fold, but it also set the groundwork for the return of Kirby (Hayden Panettiere).
Despite being a fan favorite in "Scream 4," Kirby was tragically left for dead near the end of the movie. How'd she die? Well, she made the tragic mistake of trusting her potential love interest Charlie (Rory Culkin), trying to save him from Ghostface when she should've been saving herself. The good news is that Kirby was soon avenged by her supportive,...

Adria Arjona and Glen Powell may have some very steamy scenes in “Hit Man,” but filming them was anything but sexy.
It all went wrong when they were shooting in a bathtub and someone added Dawn dish washing soap to the water. “That strips you of all your oils of your skin,” Arjona says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “That’s used for baby ducks when there’s an oil spill for God’s sake. We soaked in this bathtub for an hour and I get out of the tub and all of a sudden I dry myself and I can’t bend my knees because I have no oils.”

Up to this point, Mikey Madison––the fearless, explosive 27-year-old lead of Sean Baker’s Anora––is best-known for her chilling turn as the deranged killer in the 2022 Scream reboot. Before that she was the shrieking Manson girl in the finale of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. (Remember the one Rick Dalton torches in the pool?) Beyond this point, however, the world will know her for Anora. And they will know her.

All a director can do is set their actor up for success and inspire confidence––provide the proper tools, framing, character prep, and rehearsal. Of course, as author of the project,...

He occasionally helps out the local police department by recording sting operations on people trying to hire a hitman. When he’s forced into pretending to be one, he finds that he’s got quite a knack for it.
When he meets a young woman named Madison (Adria Arjona) who tries to hire his hit man alter ego, it sets up a series of events that will put lives in danger. If Mark Eidelstein’s career takes off in Hollywood, he can thank his decision to record a self tape of himself fully naked.
In Sean Baker’s raucous comedy “Anora,” the young Russian actor plays Ivan, the hilariously energetic, fast-living son of an oligarch happily spending his parents’ millions while decamped in their New York mansion who then falls in love with Mikey Madison’s Manhattan sex worker Ani. It’s a wild ride from start to finish, awash in drugs, sex, violence, gangsters, Vegas weddings and a lounge full of expensive ornaments getting smashed to pieces.
Put forward by Yura Borisov, his co-star on on Russian sci-fi “Guest From the Future,” who had just been cast as a reluctant heavy in “Anora,” Eidelstein was sent a script like nothing he’d ever seen before, littered in what he describes as “flash, flash, flash, bam, bam, action, action, action.” It...

It’s taken a while for Glen Powell to truly step into the spotlight. After popping up in the likes of Hidden Figures, Set It Up and Everybody Wants Some!! (the last his first collaboration with Richard Linklater), it was 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick that saw him really take flight, giving an unforgettably hissable-yet-heroic performance as Lt Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin. Major turns have come since — box-office-busting romcom Anyone But You and another aviation adventure, Devotion — but it is with Hit Man that Powell announces himself as a movie star and a filmmaking force to be reckoned with.
Inspired by the true story of teacher-turned-pretend-assassin Gary Johnson (as reported by journalist Skip Hollandsworth in a 2001 article for Texas Monthly), Hit Man sees Powell re-team with Linklater, this time on a deeper creative level as co-writer. It takes the real-life nugget of Gary’s unusual side-hustle and expands it into a tale of murder,...

Director Sean Baker and his Anora star Mikey Madison have spoken about the “collaborative” process of portraying sex workers in a film that he acknowledged hearkens back to the captivating love story in Pretty Woman.
Baker spoke with his cast at Cannes’ press conference for the film, which follows Anora (Madison), a young sex worker from Brooklyn, who gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). But the fairytale is threatened when her fiancé’s parents set out to get the marriage annulled.
“Mikey had so much to do with the development of Anora,” Baker said as he lauded his lead actress. “I wrote the script for Mikey. We had a meeting and asked if she was interested, I said: ‘Okay, I’m going to write you a script and come back in three months.’ It took a year.

Better Things actress Mikey Madison goes the distance in a raw and revealing performance as a high-class stripper who is romanced, and married by, the son of a Russian oligarch in Sean Baker’s Anora.
The pic is one of many in Baker’s canon, including Starlet and Red Rocket, that centers on a sex worker. In fact, the filmmaker said Wednesday at a Cannes Film Festival press conference for Anora that “my next film involves a sex worker.”
Why is Baker so hot for the subject?

At a Cannes press conference for his new film “Anora” on Wednesday, Sean Baker discussed his affinity for making films about sex workers — and teased his next film.
“Anora,” which premiered at the film festival on Tuesday, follows a strip club worker who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch. When asked about how sex workers came to be the subject of the last five of his movies, Baker said after making 2012’s “Starlet,” he was “introduced to the adult film world.”
“I became friends with [sex workers] and realized there were a million stories from that world. If there is one intention with all of these films, I would say it’s by telling human stories, by telling stories that are hopefully universal,” he said. “It’s helping remove the stigma that’s been applied to this livelihood, that’s always been applied to this livelihood.”

“Bridgerton” Season 3 is off to a steamy hot start.
The third season of the Shondaland period drama drew 45.1 million views over its first four days of availability, according to Netflix, easily finishing first on the streamer’s Global Top 10 list. Take that, Tom Brady roast.
It was the biggest week — by quite a bit — for any series on Netflix since the streamer changed its core metric from hours viewed to views in mid-June 2023.
The first four “Bridgerton” Season 3 episodes reached number 1 in 78 countries and the Top 10 in 92, Netflix said. The next four episodes premiere on June 13; try not to obsess over the big cliffhanger between now and then.
The third season of “Bridgerton” also brought the first two back to (some semblance of) their former glory. “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 both returned to Netflix’s Top 10 TV (in any language) list in the week ahead of Season 3. They did even better during Season 3’s premiere week.

Sean Baker’s tragicomedy features Madison as an escort betrayed by a bratty oligarch’s son who she marries in a film that offers a more realistic take than Pretty Woman
What would Pretty Woman look like if it bore the smallest resemblance to the reality of sex work? Maybe something like this, Sean Baker’s amazing, full-throttle tragicomedy of romance, denial and betrayal. It’s a non-love story which finds its apex in a Las Vegas wedding chapel in the middle of the night and then, with a terrible inevitability, slaloms downwards into the most extraordinary, cacophonous uproar of recrimination unfolding in what is more or less real time. The hangover outlasts the party by many days.

Sean Baker returned to the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday with Anora, his New York-set romantic dramedy about a stripper from Brooklyn who transforms into a modern Cinderella when she meets the son of a Russian oligarch.
The film, playing in the official competition three years after Baker’s success in Cannes with the Simon Rex-starring Red Rocket, scored an 10-minute ovation after the mid-afternoon world premiere screening wrapped at the Palais de Festivals.
The pic centers on Anora, who meets, falls in love with and marries the son of a Russian oligarch. Complications most certainly arise when his parents find out and try to get the marriage annulled.

The uncut gem of this year’s Cannes competition, “Anora” is a rowdy Safdie-style movie about two cultures (Russian and American), two languages (Russian and English) and two currencies (money and sex). Like countless Hollywood fantasies that have come before, it tells the story of how young people from different worlds fall in love, run into immediate obstacles and deal with the consequences — except the couple in this case consists of a New York stripper and the reckless son of a Russian oligarch. How long would you give it?
Director Sean Baker describes “Anora” as a Cinderella story, but that’s only true to the extent that his Walt Disney World-adjacent “The Florida Project” could be seen as a fairy tale. Baker’s subversively romantic, free-wheeling sex farce makes “Pretty Woman” look like a Disney movie. It follows on the (knee-high boot) heels of four other films in which...

Sean Baker’s “Anora,” a hilarious yet touching drama in which a sex worker falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch, energized Cannes Film Festival with a 7.5-minute standing ovation on Tuesday.
As the crowd applauded, the indie maverick director and Cannes darling said into the microphone, “Thank you to the Cannes Film Festival for making dreams come true … And also thank you to all of you for coming out and seeing our film on the best screen in the world. Long live cinema!”
The ovation wasn’t the only chance for applause — the audience erupted into cheers numerous times during the two-hour film, including on several occasions during one wild scene in which the oligarch’s associates raid his son’s mansion.
In the film, Mikey Madison plays Anora, a 23-year-old working at a strip club outside of New York City. Her luck changes when she...

Anora — or “Ani,” as she prefers to be called — is a brassy, 23-year-old Russian-American stripper who shares a small house with her sister in Brighton Beach. Ivan — or “Vanya,” as he uses interchangeably — is the 21-year-old son of a Moscow billionaire who stays in his father’s cocaine mansion on the far side of Brooklyn whenever he’s in New York, which if it were up to him would be always. She works seven nights a week at the Manhattan strip club where she’s the only Russian-speaker. Ivan, meanwhile, has clearly never worked a day in his life. She’s the child of a mom who lives in Miami and a dad who doesn’t exist, while he’s a hyper-juvenile nepo baby who may never be mature enough to graduate into a large adult son.

So You Think You Can Dance closed out its 18th season on Monday night (May 20), and it came down to the two contestants who met and fell in love on the show. The three finalists — 18-year-old Dakayla Wilson, 18-year-old Anthony Curley, and 21-year-old Madison Alvarado — came into Monday’s finale looking to impress the judges one last time and take home the $100,000 grand prize. While this season of Sytycd adopted a pre-taped, weekly-industry-challenge format, the finale returned to a more back-to-basics approach, with the three finalists tasked with performing duets to help clinch the win. Each finalist was paired with a previously eliminated Top 10 contestant for the duets, which included Madison teaming with Braylon, Anthony with Mariyah, and Dakayla with Easton. All three finalists were given high praise from judges Allison Holker, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and JoJo Siwa. Holker called Madison “the most consistent dancer” of the season, and Anthony will...

So You Think You Can Dance‘s unconventional 18th season came to a close on Monday night, with a finale that actually did feel more like the show we used to know.
Although the Fox competition has largely traded in its usual format for a pre-taped, weekly-industry-challenge approach — I previously wrote about why that pivot hurt the show more than it helped — Monday’s finale went back to basics, asking finalists Dakayla, Anthony and Madison to perform regular duets that might help them clinch the big win.

The Hit Man star takes aim as her career levels up
Adria Arjona knows just how scary it can be to meet your heroes. One of her all-time favourite movies is School Of Rock, and when she first met Richard Linklater, not even the relative safety of a Zoom call could save her. “My hands were sweaty,” she admits to Empire. “I was really trying to play it cool and that lasted for about ten minutes.”
After a series of supporting turns in genre fare, crime dramas (True Detective), and recently as the forthright Bix in Andor, the 31-year-old actor is stepping into fresh territory with Linklater’s romcom HitMan. Alongside Glen Powell, she stars as Madison, a housewife with a controlling husband who falls for the contract killer (Powell) she hires to take him out. The only problem: her new boyfriend is actually working undercover for the police as a fake hitman.

Back in 2022, the world was shocked by the story of Simon Leviev, a con artist who manipulated the women he met through the dating application Tinder into financially supporting him while pretending to be in danger. Titled Tinder Swindler, this true crime movie became the most-watched documentary on Netflix at the time.
People's interest in true-crime stories, interwined with the personal dramas of the victims, doesn’t need to be rekindled. Thus, Netflix is preparing us for another docuseries, exploring the topics of the dating sites, love and, of course, lies.
It will center on the creators and users of quite a rare dating service, The Ashley Madison Agency, that has a bold slogan: "Life is short. Have an affair." You may guess it was launched specifically for married people curious about the possibility of adultery.

Season 10 of Southern Charm is nearly wrapping up; very little about it is still known.
The season should be iconic, right? With 10 seasons of a show, there should be plenty of drama and a supreme cast.
However, we know that Olivia Flowers won’t be back, and it seems Salley Carson is swooping in to replace her.
Instagram account Queens of Bravo dropped some tea about what they know to be true for Season 10 of Southern Charm.
While some of it wasn’t really “tea,” they revealed tension between Craig Conover and Austen Kroll. It’s reportedly due to Paie DeSorbo, which is interesting.
There was allegedly a meltdown from Craig over the weekend that could have something to do with the tension and the girlfriend.
Craig Conover responds to refute, then deletes comment
Interestingly enough, Craig Conover commented on the Queens of Bravo post but deleted the comment within hours.

Peter Weber’s season of The Bachelor is still one of the messiest seasons ever. He dumped fiance Hannah Ann Sluss for another chance with runner-up Madison Prewett. His relationship with Madison quickly fizzled out and he sought to explore his connection with another contestant, Kelley Flanagan.
The pilot and the lawyer dated off and on for years before calling it quits for good. In June 2023, she debuted a new boyfriend named Ari Raptis.

On “So You Think You Can Dance” season 18, “Challenge #1: Music Videos” led to the ousters of two female finalists: Avery Gay and Olivia Alboher. Then in “Challenge #2: Broadway,” two male contestants got the boot: Roman Nevinchanyi and Braylon Browner. That left six contestants to compete in “Challenge #3: Movies”: Madison Alvarado, Anthony Curley, Mariyah Hawkins, Easton Magliarditi, Jaylin Sanders and Dakayla Wilson. So what happened when they left the stage behind and headed for the big screen?
“It’s time to pull up a chair and grab some popcorn because it’s movie week,” says Cat Deeley at the start of the episode following a “Breakfast Club”-esque cinematic hip-hop dance routine with the top six portraying students in Saturday detention. But just barely escaping detention last week were Anthony and Dakayla, who were in the bottom four but survived the dance-off.
“So how did it feel dancing against your love interest,...

Well, that was quite the bloodbath!
Tracker is many things, but in general, it's not super heavy on death, though that can be a natural conclusion to an action-adventure story. Violence can and will lead to people losing their lives.
But Tracker Season 1 Episode 10 was heavy on murder, with many people caught up in the aftermath of a heist gone wrong.
Much like Tracker Season 1 Episode 7 was a showcase for Bobby, this hour gave us some insight into Reenie, who finally returned triumphantly after being Mia for a while.
Although we didn't get to meet her father, he was a factor, as his friend needed help, and it's always a treat when Gil Birmingham pops up in a show we love.
It was an exciting turn for Reenie to request a favor from Colton rather than hiring him, even though Colter would be getting paid in the end.

General Hospital (Gh) spoilers note that fans remain confused about Ava Jerome’s (Maura West) agenda when it comes to Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard). She’s clearly up to something no good by finding out his bipolar meds have been tampered with and not telling him about it. Plus, she’s worked overtime to alienate those closest to the mob boss to ensure she’s the only one in his inner circle.
Is she working with someone at Pikeman or Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) to bring Sonny down or does she have an ulterior motive?
General Hospital Spoilers – Ava Jerome Scores Massive Points With Sonny Corinthos
Gh spoilers suggest that while Ava lost a friend in Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros), she scored massive points with Sonny as she was able to get his estranged wife to sign those divorce papers he so desperately wanted.
