The following article contains spoilers for "Ahsoka."
Getting to see a live-action version of the "Star Wars Rebels" character Sabine Wren was pretty cool. Whatever your feelings about the series, Natasha Liu Bordizzo absolutely captured the animated character from "Rebels" voiced by Tiya Sircar. In the Disney+ live-action "Ahsoka," we learned that Sabine had begun training as a Jedi with Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) before the events of the series. However, it wasn't working out and they'd parted ways. As the show begins, Ahsoka needs Sabine's help, and their training starts up again. Sabine is still struggling with frustration about her powers, and where she fits in the universe now. Add in the fact that she's missing her friend Ezra (Eman Esfandi) who is missing along with Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and you have a recipe for some personality clashes.

Spoilers for "Ahsoka" follow.
What compelled Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), a Mandalorian, to remove and store her neon beskar armor in "Ahsoka"? Episode 4, "A Fallen Jedi," insinuates a depressing answer to this, as well as her fervor to find her long-lost battle brother Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) in the far reaches of Wild Space. It's only when Sabine regains hope in Ezra's survival that she dons her beskar and Mandalorian weaponry again.
Sabine lands in a tight spot when she seemingly loses her Jedi master, Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson). Cornered by Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson), a former Jedi and Imperial-allied mercenary, Sabine holds the Wild Space map hostage. Through Force mind-reads and deduction, Baylan realizes that Sabine lost her Mandalorian birth family, which fuels her desperation to find Ezra. He tempts her to surrender the map in return for her survival, which gives the Thrawn loyalists the coordinates to Wild Space.

In bringing Star Wars Rebels' Sabine into live-action, Disney+'s Ahsoka made a few changes.
The Star Wars Rebels animated series, which was also helmed by Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni, introduced audiences to Sabine Wren, an artist, weapons expert, and Mandalorian voiced by Tiya Sircar.
Star Wars' latest Disney+ series may be called Ahsoka, but so far, Natasha Liu Bordizzo's live-action Sabine is front and center, making any character changes difficult to hide and impossible to ignore.

This Star Wars: Ahsoka article contains spoilers.
There’s never been a Star Wars show quite as jam-packed with easter eggs and references as Ahsoka, which is not just pulling from The Mandalorian-era shows but also two animated series and even one of the most celebrated Expanded Universe novels of all time. It’s easily the most ambitious Star Wars series to date, especially as it will presumably also set up the film set to be directed by Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni.
Featuring characters from both The Clone Wars and Rebels, and essentially serving as a sequel to the latter cartoon, Ahsoka wastes no time with its callbacks, as elements from those animated series make the jump to live action.
Here are all the biggest easter eggs and points of interest in “Master and Apprentice” and “Toil and Trouble”:

Ever since “The Mandalorian” first arrived on Disney+ in Nov. 2019, Lucasfilm has strived to bring the world of “Star Wars” to streaming in a way that would satisfy lifelong fans without alienating anyone who has never before traveled to a galaxy far, far away. In many ways, that mission faces its greatest challenge with the newest “Star Wars” show, “Ahsoka.”
Technically a spin-off of Rosario Dawson’s performance as former Jedi Ahsoka Tano on “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett,” the show is really a sequel to two “Star Wars” animated shows: “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels.” Taken together, these shows, which ran from 2008 to 2020, span 208 episodes of TV, and roughly cover the events between “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” and “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” (on “Clone Wars”) and “Revenge of the Sith” and “Star Wars: A New Hope” (on “Rebels...

Momentum Pictures has launched the trailer for the Ike Barinhotlz and Dylan O’Brien-led mockumentary comedy ‘Maximum Truth.’
The film follows a documentary crew as they film “political grifter” Rick Klingman (Barinhotlz), an attorney and political consultant on a mission to dig up some dirt against congressional candidate Antonio (Max Minghella).
He enlists his friend of his equally sketchy buddy Simon (O’Brien) and whilst unsure about their investigation at first, the deeper down the rabbit hole they go the crazier things get.
David Stassen directs a cast that also includes Blake Anderson, Beth Grant, Kiernan Shipka, Brianna Baker, Mark Proksch and Tiya Sircar.
The movie hits U.S. theatres and On Demand on June 23rd.

"Star Wars: Visions" Volume 2 seemed to have done its homework on Star Wars cartoons. For starters, the "Bandits of Golak" utters a quip like "All this for sweets?", which emulates a line like "All this for fruit?" in "Star Wars Rebels" season 1. But the Aardman stop-motion short "I Am Your Mother" takes its "Rebels" homages a step further through its Twi'lek character designs.
That is, if the creative and color choices aren't just a coincidence. The Aardman short concerns a teal Twi'lek mother and daughter, both of whom just happen to resemble the old teal concept art of Hera Syndulla, the Twi'lek pilot of the Ghost crew in "Rebels" voiced by Vanessa Marshall. This may feel coincidental until you spy Hera Syndulla floating in the background and suspect that the short's director, Magdalena Osinska, was deliberate about their nearly identical appearances to the Hera prototypes. After all, the young Twi'lek...

Through roles in Knives Out and Defending Jacob, Evans has tried to stretch himself beyond the realm of comic books by selecting projects that are nowhere near comparisons to Steve Rogers. Chris Evans saved the world (and even the universe) multiple times as Captain America. But in his latest Apple TV+ action film “Ghosted,” it’s Ana de Armas who’s doing the rescuing.
“It was great. I mean, we’ve all seen Ana be badass; she was so good in [‘No Time to Die’],” Evans told Variety at the New York premiere of “Ghosted” on Tuesday night. “It was nice to be the damsel in distress. It was nice to need saving — primarily because I didn’t have to sweat during the action sequences.”
Directed by Dexter Fletcher, “Ghosted” follows hopelessly romantic Cole (Evans), who falls head over heels for the enigmatic Sadie (de Armas). When Sadie seemingly ghosts him, Cole follows her to London as a romantic gesture, only to discover that the girl of his dreams is a CIA agent on assignment.

From animation to live-action, the Mandalorian known as Bo-Katan Kryze (both iterations played by Katee Sackhoff) has gone through a messy redemption quest. Perhaps "redemption" may be too generous of a word. Kryze is a woman of many facets: extremist warmonger, attempted savior of Mandalore, violator of Mandalorian treaties by teaming up with the Republic military, (apparent) rightful wielder of the Darksaber, and now a guest member of a Mandalorian cult.
Bo-Katan walked many convoluted and compelling paths in the name of liberating her shattered Mandalore homeworld. Like the symbol of the Darksaber, Bo-Katan's idea of liberating and leading Mandalore has assumed many shapes, some unsavory and some noble, but always shaded by gray morality. The most recent chapter of "The Mandalorian, "The Pirate," steers Bo-Katan back into the higher calling of unifying Mandalore, but in a way that also belies the atrocities of her past allegiances.

"The Mandalorian" is back with a third season on Disney+ after a two-year wait. One of the central storylines this season features Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) traveling to the ruined Mandalore to bathe in the Living Waters under the Mines of Mandalore. Why does he have to do this? Din has done something a certain sect of Mandalorians isn't supposed to; he has removed his helmet in front of others. This makes him an apostate to his group, though other Mandalorians like Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) scoff at him for doing so.
Din has removed his helmet a few times, most gut-wrenchingly when Grogu left with Luke Skywalker to continue his Jedi training. This helmet issue and the split within the Mandalorian ranks (both now and during their history) have been central themes of the show. Whether it will change or not will depend on where the story goes, what he learns while on Mandalore,...

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the second episode of "The Mandalorian" season 3.
Lightsabers have been a staple of the "Star Wars" franchise since Luke Skywalker saw one for the first time in the Tatooine cave of Obi-Wan Kenobi in "A New Hope." Over the decades, we've learned about the different styles of lightsabers, the Kyber crystals needed to create them, what the different colors might mean, and how to wield them. The Darksaber is a bit different than the rest, however. It was created by Tarre Vizsla a thousand years before "The Mandalorian" takes place. Tarre was the first to be both a Mandalorian and a Jedi, despite the fact that those two groups have a less-than-friendly history. The Jedi held it in their Temple until the Mandalorians freed it. Now their lore says the wielder of the Darksaber has the right to rule Mandalore, but only if they win it through combat.

In the past decade, network television has failed to compete creatively with the shows available on premium channels and streaming services. The best showrunners and artists in the industry tend to sign deals with the studios that they know will give them the freedom to pursue their ideas to their fullest potential. How can networks like NBC compete with blockbuster shows like HBO's "Game of Thrones" or Netflix's "Stranger Things?"
A rare exception to this trend is NBC's brilliant existential science fiction sitcom "The Good Place." Although it functions as a standard network comedy, "The Good Place" is slyly subversive in the way that it tackles themes such as inherent nature, determinism, and mental health. Creator Michael Schur is a veteran of the industry. He previously worked on "The Office," "Parks and Recreation," and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."

Natasha Liu Bordizzo is bursting at the seams as she tries to contain her excitement over landing her dream role as Sabine Wren in the Star Wars galaxy. In May, the Australian actor was introduced to thousands of fans at Star Wars Celebration as she promoted 2023’s Disney+ series Ahsoka, alongside Ahsoka Tano herself, Rosario Dawson.
The road to being cast as the artistic Mandalorian warrior started when Bordizzo sent in a self-tape, and it happened to include a scene from Top Gun, as well as another unrelated scene that reminded her of Harrison Ford’s Han Solo. So even though she didn’t know that she was auditioning for a Star Wars project like Ahsoka, Captain Solo’s spirit was very much on her mind and hasn’t left.

Described as a “genre-defying series,” Apple TV+’s “The Afterparty” features a murderer’s row of comedic talent, all joined together for creator and sole director Chris Miller’s murder mystery. Set on the night of a 15-year high school reunion where a murder has occurred, nearly every segment in the eight-episode season (of which seven were provided for this review) comes from the perspective of one of the night’s attendees. That individual provides testimony to the detective on the case — Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) — who considers these accounts “mind movies.” According to Danner, “we’re all the stars of our own movie” — which creates the basic angle of the series.
Based on these individual episode-length “mind movies,” “The Afterparty” sets out to build a complete picture of what actually happened on the night of the murder of a high-profile celebrity (and the suspects’ former classmate), Xavier (Dave Franco...

We should all be so lucky to have Tiffany Haddish sit us down for an unauthorized police interrogation, and stipulate that our witness statements be delivered in the form of a specific movie genre. What fun! Except she’s Tiffany Haddish, and she suffers fools the way giraffes suffer pesky insects—with a huff and a slap. “The Afterparty,” the new Apple TV+ series from Chris Miller, is stocked with fools, so Haddish has her work cut out for her, which means we have the pleasure of watching her raise eyebrows at an ensemble comprising Sam Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Ilana Glazer, Zoë Chao, Ike Barinholtz, John Early, Dave Franco, Tiya Sircar, and Genevieve Angelson as self-centered neurotics each suspected of murder most foul.

The upcoming Ahsoka Tano series at Disney Plus has cast Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Variety has confirmed with sources.
She joins previously announced series lead Rosario Dawson. Wren was first introduced to the “Star Wars” universe in the animated series “Star Wars Rebels.” She is a young Mandalorian and a weapons expert, particularly when it comes to explosives. She is also known for her love of graffiti and is a dropout of the Imperial Academy of Mandalore. After the fall of the Empire, Wren and Tano struck out in search of their missing friend, Ezra Bridger. In “Rebels,” the character was voiced by Tiya Sircar.
Reps for Lucasfilm and Bordizzo did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

Exclusive: Natasha Liu Bordizzo (The Society) has been cast as a lead opposite Rosario Dawson in the Disney+ limited series Star Wars: Ahsoka, a spinoff from the streamer’s hit series The Mandalorian, I have learned. I hear Bordizzo will be taking on the character of Sabine Wren from the Star Wars Rebels animated series. Reps from Lucasfilm and Bordizzo did not return emails seeking comment.
Dawson stars as Ahsoka Tano in the limited series after making the Star Wars: Clone Wars and Rebels character’s live-action debut in The Mandalorian. The offshoot, written by Dave Filoni and executive produced by Filoni and Jon Favreau, will continue Ahsoka’s story.
No additional information about the new series has been released by Lucasfilm, but there has been a lot of online speculation that key characters from Rebels such as Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger would join Ahsoka in the new show.

Christmas might not be until December, but some networks are slapping on their mittens and gearing up for the holiday season as early as October.
Families often find themselves gathered around the TV binging some of Hallmark or Lifetime’s latest Christmas-themed films, and this year is no exception. With people around the country encouraged to stay indoors and avoid crowded locations, Variety breaks down a list of feel-good Christmas movies to tune into this year.
As part of Lifetime’s “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime” holiday movie slate, the channel will premiere 30 original TV movies beginning Oct. 23 and running through mid-December. In its efforts to diversify the stories it showcases, Lifetime said it worked with GLAAD and Cape (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment) for its first-ever LGBTQ-led film “The Christmas Setup” and “A Sugar & Spice Holiday” centering on an Asian American family.
More films will be added to the list as networks announce them.

Quibi’s new “The Fugitive” is not your father’s “Fugitive” — or your grandfather’s, for that matter.
In fact, the only thing the reboot, which premieres on Aug. 3, has in common with the 1993 Harrison Ford-Tommy Lee Jones movie — itself based on the 1960s television drama — is the man-on-the-run storyline. Series creator Nick Santora didn’t even bring back the lead characters iconic names, Kimble and Gerard.
“This is a modern reimagining of this classic film,” Boyd Holbrook says on Thursday’s episode of The Big Ticket, Variety and iHeart’s podcast. He stars as Mike Ferro, an ex-con who goes on the lam when an overzealous reporter (Tiya Sircar) tweets that he is the prime suspect in the terrorist bombing of a Los Angeles Metro station. Kiefer Sutherland plays Clay Bryce, the detective in charge of the investigation.

Exclusive: Good Sam star Tiya Sircar is set as a lead alongside Kiefer Sutherland and Boyd Holbrook in Quibi’s The Fugitive, a new take on the 1993 Harrison Ford film which was based on the 1960s TV series of the same name, from Scorpion creator Nick Santora, Thunder Road Films, 3 Arts Entertainment and Warner Bros. TV.
Written by Santora, The Fugitive centers on blue collar worker Mike Russo, who just wants to make sure his wife, Allison, and 10-year-old daughter, Pearl, are safe, when a bomb rips through the Los Angeles subway train he’s riding on. But the faulty evidence on the ground and “tweet-now, confirm-later” journalism paint a nightmarish picture: it looks to all the world that Mike was responsible for the heinous act. Wrongfully—and very publicly—accused, Mike must prove his innocence by uncovering the real perpetrator, before the legendary cop heading the investigation can apprehend him.

Actress Tiya Sircar stars in the new Netflix film Good Sam and also appears in the NBC comedy The Good Place. Needless to say, there is plenty of “good” in her life. A Texas native and the daughter of Indian immigrants, Sircar’s journey to Hollywood was very, as she puts it, “pragmatic”.
Many children of immigrants (of a certain generation) are expected to go into a more stable field of work like medicine, law, or engineering. Going into acting or the arts is something that is a no-no for many children of immigrants. It’s slowly changing, but still common. NetflixThe Netflix original film, starring Tiya Sircar as a broadcast journalist, is directed by award-winning filmmaker Kate Melville and has a significant female crew.Vaishnavi SundarAs a filmmaker, film lover and an advocate of representation of women in world cinema, I have always yearned to watch films that thwarted racial stereotypes. Though I can count such films with the fingers on one hand, I end up finding something irksome even in those. This week I watched the Netflix original film Good Sam starring Indian-American actor Tiya Sircar – directed by Kate Melville with a significant female crew – and was pleasantly surprised. Kate Melville is an award-winning filmmaker and screenwriter. Her debut feature Picture Day premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and won the Borsos Prize for Best Canadian Feature. After having worked extensively in television, Kate brings us the light-hearted albeit impossible plot of an ideal world that still nurtures good Samaritans.
