A predictably spectacular sunset spreads streaks of pink and orange across a northern Spanish late September sky, heralding the end of another packed edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival, where at the closing gala, “The Rye Horn” the second feature from Spanish director Jaione Camborda has just been handed the Golden Shell, the festival’s top award.
It is perhaps a surprising win, but does now mark the fourth consecutive year that the festival’s most prestigious prize has gone to a female director. But in another way it has to be a first: the international jury, comprising French director Claire Denis, alongside Chinese actor and producer Fan Bingbing, Colombian producer-director Cristina Gallego, French photographer Brigitte Lacombe, Spanish actor Vicky Luengo, Canadian producer and distributor Robert Lantos and German director Christian Petzold, has chosen to award not just a Spanish film, but one from a female director who was...

Javier Bardem, winner of a San Sebastian 2023 Donostia Award for career achievement, is putting back his on-stage acceptance of the distinction until the 2024 San Sebastian Film Festival.
The postponement is due to the “limits imposed under the strike called by the U.S. Actors Union (SAG-AFTRA),” the San Sebastian Festival announced Friday.
It deprives this year’s Festival of its biggest on-stage major star moment this year.
The fest will, however, enjoy its customary bullish presence of world-class auteurs, led this year by Claire Denis, main competition jury chair, and Victor Erice, will accept his Donostia Award on Sept. 29. San Sebastian announced Friday that Hayao Miyazaki will also accept a Donostia Award online.
Gabriel Byrne, François Cluzet, Emmanuelle Devos, Griffin Dunne, Aidan Gillen, Mads Mikkelsen, James Norton and Dominic West have confirmed their attendance, Byrne and Gillen for one of the festival’s biggest tickets, James Marsh’s official selection closing film “Dance First.

Acclaimed Scottish director Lynne Ramsay will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award, the lifetime achievement honor of the Sarajevo Film Festival. Ramsay will be presented with the award at this year’s Bosnian festival on Aug. 16 at a gala event followed by the screening of her 2017 feature You Were Never Really Here. The psychological crime drama premiered in Cannes, where it won best screenplay honors for Ramsay and the best actor prize for star Joaquin Phoenix.
Ramsay has been a feature on the international art house scene since 1996, when her student short, Smalls and Death, won the Prix de Jury in Cannes. She repeated the feat in 1998 with Gasman and also brought her 1998 debut Ratcatcher to the French festival, premiering in Un Certain Regard, where it won a special mention from the jury. The drama, a coming-of-age story set in 1970s Glasgow, also won Ramsay a BAFTA for most promising newcomer.

Robert De Niro to star in ‘Zero Day’ (Photo Courtesy of Brigitte Lacombe)
Two-time Oscar-winner Robert De Niro will star in Netflix’s limited series Zero Day, marking the first time the acting icon has starred in a television series. De Niro will also be an executive producer on what the streaming service describes as a conspiracy thriller.
Netflix offered this brief description of the six-episode limited series: “Zero Day asks the question on everyone’s mind — how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?”

This crisply shot monochrome short from Lynne Ramsay has a shifting focus befitting of a film about someone who spends much of her life behind a lens. New York-based French photographer Brigitte Lacombe not only shoots in black and white but also wears "a uniform" of black short and skirt with sensible sandals to capture the portrait pictures she is famed for and examples of which appear in the film.
The film is part of fashion brand Miu Miu's series of Women's Tales but, as you might expect from Ramsay, it is not a chapter and verse guide to Lacombe's career but an immersive and often emotional snapshot. She captures the photographer at work, but also through interviews in which she discusses her work and her family relationships, particularly with her sister Marian, who is a documentary maker herself.
There's an obvious rapport between Ramsay and Lacombe, perhaps stemming from their own.

The gap between Lynne Ramsay projects is often an extended one, but as her four features since 1999 have proven, the wait is usually worth it. Following up her 2017 psychological thriller You Were Never Really Here, she was working on what was described as an “environmental horror” film and now we have more clarification on that project as well as the briefest of hints on another one in the works.
“I think there’s elements of ancient horror in it with an eye for the environment, but I was being a little bit flippant,” Ramsay tells The Hindu, speaking about this announced project. “You know when people ask sometimes what are you doing, and you say just something to them. But yes, it is an original and a period piece, which is very interesting, and I’m also doing an adaptation of a short story by Margaret Atwood. I can’t really say much about that.

New York-based Filipina filmmaker Isabel Sandoval’s “Lingua Franca,” about a transgender immigrant, is among 11 competition entries, all world premieres, that will launch from the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Venice Days section.
The only U.S. entry set to compete in the section modeled on Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, “Lingua Franca” is Sandoval’s third work. It follows “Apparition” (2012), a period drama about cloistered Filipina nuns praised by Variety’s Richard Kuipers as an “outstanding sophomore feature.”
Produced by Tony- and Grammy-winning Filipino producer Jhett Tolentino, and by Darlene Malimas and Carlo Velayo, “Lingua Franca” is set in Brighton Beach, New York, where a transgender Filipina immigrant named Olivia – played by Sandoval, who is herself transgender – scrambles to avoid deportation. She becomes involved with a Russian slaughterhouse worker who is unaware that she’s trans.

She becomes involved with a Russian slaughterhouse worker who is unaware that she’s trans.

When independent film producer Marie-Louise Khondji founded Le Cinéma Club in July of 2015 in her bedroom, she had a singular vision for the curated streaming site. “The initial idea was really to create a platform where we can present one filmmaker and one film at a time,” she said in a recent interview, “while, at the same time, creating an easy guide for the audience to discover films and filmmakers they wouldn’t on their own.”
Each week, the site showcases a single film for free, helping guide its audience to an international array of established and up-and-coming talent. For Khondji, the one-week window was designed to “give better visibility” to the individual films and to create a sense of event around each pick. “We’re still in a relatively new era of digital distribution and I wanted to try this new model,” she said. “I was trying to imagine...

The 24th Sarajevo Film Festival has awarded its top prize to Bulgarian director Milko Lazarov’s “Ága.” The Yakut-language movie, which saw its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February, tells the story of a troubled Inuit family.
“Ága” won the Heart of Sarajevo on Thursday night, the festival’s prize for best feature film, which includes a €16,000 award. The movie, a co-production between Bulgaria, Germany and France, was co-written by Lazarov and Simeon Ventsislavov.
“Ága” centers on an isolated Inuit couple who hold on to their traditions while global warming and the modern world encroach. When the wife’s health deteriorates, the husband decides to fulfill her last wish by embarking on a long journey to find their daughter, Ága, who deserted the couple long ago. Variety’s Jay Weissberg called the film a “handsome paean to a dying culture.”
