Joel approaches accents in a unique way: Because our brains block us from hearing sounds we don't use in our original accent or language, many people have difficulty hearing and imitating the sounds of a new accent. Joel teaches clients how to make these new sounds, which creates new neural pathways in the brain, allowing the client to feel and hear the new sounds. Once clients begin to recognize the new sounds in themselves, they can start to hear and imitate them in native speakers of the accent, as well as making the vital leap to being able to correct themselves in the new accent. Joel details this process in an interview about accents on David Farrier's Flightless Bird podcast, produced by Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert; his interview begins at about 22:00 minutes into the podcast, and is available on most podcast platforms.
Joel holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from the University of California at Irvine.
