In January 2022, Casey Wilson was a guest on The Deep Dive, a podcast hosted by her longtime friends and frequent comedy collaborators June Diane Raphael and Jessica St. Clair. The episode kicked off what the pod was calling their Lifelong Learners Series, an only moderately satirical moniker for their discussions dedicated to everything from tablescaping to mixology; Wilson — known for her highly popular Real Housewives-centric podcast Bitch Sesh — was enlisted to discuss what they called The Art of Small Talk. She and St. Clair, both professed experts in chit-chat, riffed about their favorite places to approach strangers (in line at Home Goods, in an elevator) and offered a few of their well-weathered tips (keeping it light, pivoting away from so-called energy vampires).
“The response to that specific episode was pretty wild and I got all sorts of DMs from people saying they wished it was longer, that they secretly wanted...

John Larroquette famously won Emmys for playing Dan Fielding on "Night Court" in 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1988. In 1989, he felt that he was hogging the spotlight and asked that his name be withdrawn from awards consideration. He's that good. In 1994, he was nominated for another Emmy for "The John Larroquette Show" and then won his fifth one for his work on "The Practice." In 2002, he was nominated for "The Practice" again. Larroquette has also long been beloved by the horror film community, as he provided the opening narration for Tobe Hooper's 1974 classic "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." Loyal to the series, Laroquette likewise narrated the 2003 "Texas Chainsaw" remake, its 2006 sequel, and the 2022 "Chainsaw" reboot.
For Trekkies, Larroquette might be recognizable as the Klingon officer Maltz, one of Kruge's men in 1983's "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock." Maltz was the Klingon who accidentally beamed Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) onto his Bird of Prey,...

Ike Barinholtz is going full dumbass.
That’s how The Mindy Project writer-star describes his latest character, Chris Chatman, who he’ll play for his newest project, The Chris Chatman Do-Over podcast, beginning Jan. 11.
The weekly show, which is being billed as an original improvised comedy, is the second of three installments in a series of podcasts from Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions and Audacy. The first, which launched in September, is Say More with Dr? Sheila, which stars Poehler as a fictional, world-class therapist/life coach, who has questionable methods and credentials and sees new couples each week. Barinholtz is among the many recognizable voices who have appeared as fictional guests on the popular podcast; though in his case, he was setting up a standalone series as Chatman, a controversial shock jock host.

No lie: Peacock is ordering a second season of Based on a True Story.
The NBCUniversal-owned streamer has picked up the series, a comedic thriller from UCP and starring Kaley Cuoco (who also executive produces) and Chris Messina. The first season debuted in June and earned mostly favorable reviews; detailed viewing data is, per usual with streamers, not public, but the series did land in Nielsen’s top 10 rankings for the week of its premiere.
Based on a True Story is, in fact, based on (or at least partly inspired by) a true story, while also satirizing true crime tropes. The series stars Cuoco and Messina as Ava and Nathan, a down-on-their-luck couple who cross paths with an infamous serial killer in Los Angeles. Ava, a true crime obsessive, hits on the idea of making a podcast with the killer as a way out of their rut.

June Diane Raphael and Jessica St. Clair launched their podcast, The Deep Dive, in the midst of the pandemic as a way to compensate for the loneliness and disconnect of lockdown.
Each week, the two longtime friends and creative collaborators discuss their pursuit of joy amid a bevy of challenges both relatable (motherhood, aging) and aspirational (finding the correct poolside attire for Miami Beach Pride). Doing the podcast helped lift the actresses out of their own post-lockdown voids, and their motto — “Let Us Live!” — echoes through Apple reviews posted by their ever-expanding listening community.
When the abrupt work stoppage of this summer’s double strike threatened to trigger a similar existential crisis, they were ready with an antidote: They launched the Deep Dive Academy of Significance.
“We started a virtual school, and that is one of the most insane things I think I have ever said,” St. Clair says with a laugh.

Playing a man who gets entangled in a murder investigation because his wife (Kaley Cuoco) is obsessed with true crime, “Based on a True Story” kind of hits close to home for Chris Messina. When he was a kid, he and a friend actually may have actually discovered a crime scene.
“I grew up in Northport, Long Island,” Messina told Variety at the Peacock series’ premiere Thursday at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. “I grew up on Makamah Road, about a block from the Long Island Sound. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for How I Met Your Father Season 2 Episode 3, “The Reset Button.”] In the February 7 episode of How I Met Your Father, Sophie (Hilary Duff) and Jesse (Christopher Lowell) hit the “reset button … sort of,” but did one question in Future Sophie’s (Kim Cattrall) conversation with her son provide a major clue as to what’s to come for them? Not necessarily. In “The Reset Button,” a couple (Michael McDonald and Jessica St. Clair) buys Sophie’s photo of Jesse and invites both of them over for dinner. But, it turns out, the couple wants to use it as the face of the men’s rights movement. Understandably, Sophie and Jesse try to get it out of there … with her being the distraction while he tries to remove it from the wall. Created by two-time Emmy(R) winner Armando Iannucci (HBO’s “Veep),” the eight-episode second season of Avenue 5 debuts Monday, October 10 (10:00-10:30 p.m. Et/Pt) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. The comedy series is set 40 years in the future when traveling the solar system is no longer the stuff of sci-fi fantasy, but a booming, multibillion-dollar business. Avenue 5 takes us to a not-so-distant future where space tourism is a booming business. While manning a luxury spacecraft owned by Herman Judd (Josh Gad), Captain Ryan Clark (Hugh Laurie) finds himself in over his head when the ship is thrown disastrously off-course – turning what was meant to be an eight-week cruise into an eight-year journey. Picking up five months after failing to reroute the vessel, season two follows the crew – including fiery engineer Billie (Lenora Crichlow), unpredictable head of customer relations Matt...

HBO has released a new trailer for the second season of its original series, "Avenue 5." The show was created by two-time Emmy Award-winner Armando Iannucci and stars Hugh Laurie ("House") and Josh Gad ("Beauty and the Beast"). If you haven't watched it yet, it's the story set about 40 years in the future aboard an interstellar spaceship. It's owned by clueless billionaire Herman Judd (Gad in a ponytail and some pretty wild outfits), who hired mainly attractive actors and models for his crew, so everyone would look good on the bridge and please the passengers. The ship itself is actually run by a second crew who weren't deemed pretty enough to be seen.
The titular space cruiser, Avenue 5, was supposed to be out on an eight-week cruise, but the death of an engineer and the temporary loss of artificial gravity changed their course. Instead of eight weeks, the ship would...

Captain Ryan Clark, played by Hugh Laurie, is ready to just “sit here and wait for death” as an ill-fated spaceship heads straight into the Sun.
So starts the trailer for Season 2 of HBO’s “Avenue 5,” where food is running low and passengers on a luxury space craft will have to wait eight years before returning to Earth. Josh Gad reprises his role of billionaire Herman Judd, who owns the spaceship captained by Ryan (Laurie) as customer relations executive Matt (Zach Woods) tries to thwart the growing panic onboard. The second season premieres October 10 on HBO.

Exclusive: Superstore alumna Lauren Ash is joining another single-camera broadcast workplace comedy as a series regular: she has been cast as a lead opposite Gina Rodriguez on ABC’s Not Dead Yet.
Written by Casey Johnson and David Windsor based on Alexandra Potter’s 2020 book Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up, Not Dead Yet centers on newly single and feeling-old Nell Serrano (Rodriguez), a self-described disaster who works to restart the life and career she left behind 10 years ago. A once-successful journalist, Nell put her career on hold to help her fiancé get his restaurant off the ground. Following their breakup, she takes the only job she can get – writing obituaries – which at first seems like a step backward but ultimately might be exactly what she needs to move forward.

Exclusive: New Girl alumna Hannah Simone has been tapped as a series regular opposite Gina Rodriguez on ABC’s new comedy series Not Dead Yet, from Casey Johnson and David Windsor, McG and 20th Television.
She will play a new character, Sam, in the project based on Alexandra Potter’s 2020 book Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up. Sam, who is a colleague of Rodriguez’s Nell, is part of the retooling of the single-camera comedy, which now is leaning more heavily into the workplace, with the female-friendship storyline from the pilot phased out. As a result, Jessica St. Clair and Mary Elizabeth Ellis, who played Nell’s girlfriends Annabel and Fiona in the pilot, did not continue on the series.

Exclusive: TV pilots’ role is to serve as a prototype for a series. Sometimes, networks make changes to that prototype when they proceed to mass production with a series order, which unfortunately affects talent. A joke belabored is a joke ruined. “Superintelligence,” Melissa McCarthy’s latest team-up with comedian, writer, director, and hubby Ben Falcone, ruins an overwhelming majority of its jokes. Why does McCarthy slapstick need explanation? In an early scene with Jessica St. Clair and Karan Soni, playing tech world hippie dips whose casual free-spirited babble disguises their stealth mean girl sniping, McCarthy hops on a chill sack and immediately slides off like butter melting off of stacked pancakes; the bean bag chair is just too tall.

That was, in fact, the idea behind a few Ted Lasso short films that Sudeikis starred in to promote NBC...

Now that it’s one of the most beloved comedies on streaming, across multiple generations, it can be hard to remember that The Office was not well-received when it debuted on NBC in the spring of 2005. It’s not just that the mockumentary format was relatively new to American TV, but that the show’s original conception of Michael Scott was far more malevolent and abrasive than he would become. It’s a big moment in any military man or woman’s life when they finally get that elusive promotion to four-star general. And that’s the moment that the latest trailer for Netflix comedy Space Force begins with for Steve Carell’s newly-ascendant General Mark Naird.
Mark’s got his four stars and he’s in a room with his peers: Dan Bakkedahl, Jane Lynch, Patrick Warburton, Diedrich Bader, and Noah Emmerich (presumably those actors are playing characters but for now it’s nice to just imagine that crew all in the same room together). Now all Mark has to do is to receive his latest assignment. Air Force? Army? Navy? No, my friends. Mark Naird is unaware of the name of the show that he’s on.

Steve Carell is looking to the skies… and grooving to the Beach Boys’ “Kokomo” while he does it.
Carell stars in the new Netflix comedy Space Force, co-created by Carell and The Office‘s Greg Daniels, and in a just-released teaser trailer — which you can watch above — we meet Carell’s four-star general Mark R. Naird, who gets put in charge of the U.S. military’s newest branch: the Space Force. (Yeah, Mark can barely suppress his giggling, either.)
