If filmmaking is a puzzle, casting is a corner piece that, when chosen correctly, helps hold everything together. I recently told you about Coil’s Hellraiser soundtrack that almost was, but what about the cast? Clive Barker captured lightning in a bottle with his 1987 directorial debut, but here are some casting choices that could have impacted Hellraiser significantly.
Doug Bradley as Mover
Barker has known Doug Bradley since high school, so he allowed him his choice between two roles in Hellraiser: the Lead Cenobite or one of the mattress movers. As this was his first film, Bradley nearly chose to play the mover, because he thought it was important for the audience to see his face.
Thankfully, Bradley decided on the Lead Cenobite, and the rest is history. He became a horror icon, reprising the role in the next seven sequels, while Dave Atkins and Oliver Parker (who went on...

Clive Barker's novella "The Hellbound Heart," first published in 1986, tells the story of a man named Frank who has experienced everything he feels he can sexually. In seeking a more intense experience, he turns to a mystical puzzle box, said to offer the ultimate sensual pleasure. In solving it, Frank summons a group of beings called Cenobites. "Cenobite" is simply a word for someone who belongs to a monastery. The Cenobites have patches of skin skillfully sliced off their bodies, and are all mutilated to the point of not looking human. They bleed. They are in constant pain.
The lead Cenobite, described as being androgynous, with a feminine voice and elaborate nails decorating their bare head and face, explains that they have reached a level of physical experience beyond sensory overload, and their extreme version of sadomasochism has taught them that pain and pleasure are indivisible. The Cenobites drag...

Bizarre AC II took place June 13-15 at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, and Dread Central went down-the-shore to check it out! Here's our event report plus an overflowing image gallery.
Having traveled to different conventions across the country, I am always searching for that old-school vibe I felt back in the 90’s. I would go to every NYC Weekend of Horrors starting at the age of 14 with my horror-loving father, Joseph Buckley (a man who used to buy Don Post Frankenstein masks from Famous Monsters to scare the kids with in the Heights of Jersey City but would not get the Monster inked on him while in the Navy because he thought it would upset his dad).
Bizarre AC II had that feeling… the feeling of the old ways, the old time when horror was new and everything you saw was not readily available from an online chain store.

“We have such sights to show you.” This chilling line from Pinhead can now be applied to Studiohouse Designs, as they have a new Hellraiser print for Clive Barker fans to set their sights on. Featuring the infamous Lament Configuration along with Pinhead and his Cenobite companions, this print from Studiohouse Designs will be released exclusively at New Jersey’s Bizarre AC’s Hellraiser reunion next week.
Available in two different formats, the regular silver print and the red variant print, this Hellraiser artwork gives you an up-close look at the folded-out Lament Configuration, the key to a whole new world of pain, as well as head shots of the four original Cenobites: Butterball, Pinhead, the Chatterer, and the Female. Both prints display the line “Demon To Some, Angel To Others” across the top and “Hellraiser” across the bottom, followed by the line “”Jesus Weeps Again, Bizaare AC 2014″ printed at the very bottom.

Frightmare! The premier horror convention in the Southwest has come again, and it was a riot. Well, not literally. Thankfully, massive improvements were made this year with line management of the more popular guests and parking so even when things were hot and heavy on Saturday, we never reached the critical mass found last year.
The movie and television guests were a literal who's who of icons throughout the years. The three guests of honor, Linda Blair, George A Romero, and Tobin Bell, were all busy with fans at their tables all weekend. I heard that Bell went till 1am signing on Saturday to make sure everyone was taken card of.
Having tables set up near empty walls for attendees to line up against and usage of tickets when lines got too long were big improvements. With the three guests of honor and other fan favorites such as Scott Wilson...

Still don't have a calendar picked out for next year? That Calendar of Sexy Monsters we posted about last month wasn't up your alley? Well don't worry, because we've got you covered!
The brain-child of UK-based filmmaker Melanie Light, the Women in Horror Calendar is a year-long celebration of the artists, actresses and talented ladies that dominate the horror scene, each month shining the spotlight on the women who unfortunately only seem to get recognized one month out of every year - February being 'Women in Horror Month.' The Woman's Pollyanna McIntosh, Hellraiser's Barbie Wilde and taxidermy artist Tessa Farmer are just a few of the lovely ladies that fill out the calendar, the focus being placed on their talents rather than their bodies - refreshing, to say the least.
All proceeds from the sale of the calendars will be split between the charities Rape Crisis England and the Sophie Lancaster Foundation,...

Barbie Wilde is probably best known to horror fans as the female Cenobite from Hellbound: Hellraiser II. Aside from her acting and dancing work, she’s also a horror author, having previously written a number of short stories. Her first novel is titled The Venus Complex and was released late last year. If you’re interested in learning more, she has provided us with an excerpt to share with Daily Dead readers.
“After surviving a car accident that kills his wife, Art History Professor Michael Friday becomes obsessed with Forensic Psychologist Dr Elene Shepperd. Consumed by his sexual fantasies and frustrations, Michael orchestrates a serial killing spree with an unusual art signature in the hope of being asked to help with the investigation, because he knows Elene will be called in to advise the investigating detective, Sgt. Frank Bianchi. (Dating by murder may seem a bit extreme, but then Michael...

Monster-Mania is taking place this weekend in Cherry Hill and those who attend will be able to meet dozens of horror guests, including cast members from Hellraiser and The Walking Dead. While Clive Barker was scheduled to appear, he had to cancel due to his recent health issues. However, there is still a Hellraiser 25th Anniversary reunion taking place with Doug Bradley, Ashley Laurence, Claire Higgins, Andrew Robinson, Barbie Wilde, Nicholas Vince, and Simon Bamford.
If you’re looking to meet some of the cast from The Walking Dead, the following actors are scheduled to appear: Norman Reedus, Jeffrey DeMunn, Lauren Cohan, Steven Yeun, Madison Lintz and Emma Bell. There are over a dozen additional horror guests, and there will be plenty of vendors selling horror collectibles and other merchandise.
Screenings include the new Cabal Cut of Nightbreed, along with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Scream, Carrie, Night of the Living Dead (1990) and more.

It’s hard to believe that Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart was published more than 20 years ago. The novella first appeared in 1986’s Night Visions collection, and was reissued later on as a standalone book. If you haven’t read The Hellbound Heart or seen Hellraiser, the Barker-scripted-and-directed movie it inspired, then you probably shouldn’t be reading Pocket Books’ recently published Hellbound Hearts.
Edited by Paul Kane and Marie O’Regan, this anthology includes 21 tales inspired by Barker’s hellraising universe. So if you don’t know what a Cenobite is, have never heard of the Lemarchand Configuration and think Pinhead is one of the actors in Tod Browning’s Freaks, you should check out the source material and film before opening up this tome. However, if you’re familiar with and a fan of Barker’s work, then let’s open up this Box, I mean book,...

Review by Barbie Wilde
“What Big Teeth You Have!” “The Better To Eat You With, My Dear!”
Sex and violence run like scarlet, subterranean rivers beneath the surface of many iconic fairy tales and Little Red Riding Hood is no exception. A young girl loses her way in a dark forest and meets a Woodsman and then a Wolf. They both ask her questions and give her advice, but who is friend and who is foe? She arrives at Grandma’s house, only to find her beloved Nan in the belly of the beast, literally...
What happens after Red Riding Hood’s unfortunate discovery of a Wolf in Grandma’s clothing is not definitive: in various versions of the fairy tale she either escapes unscathed; or she’s eaten by the Wolf; or she’s cut out of the Wolf’s stomach by the helpful Woodsman.

Actress/writer Barbie Wilde, best known for her performance as the one female Cenobite in the Hellraiser film series, has a new story called 'Sister Celice' featured in the new anthology Hellbound Hearts - twenty-one tales inspired by Clive Barker’s Hellraiser universe (out Sept 29, 2009 in bookstores.) In his Outside the Box interview featurette on the new DVD of Hellbound: Hellraiser II (coming December 30), director Tony Randel states that releasing the movie at Christmastime 20 years ago was “a huge mistake” on New World Pictures’ part. Fortunately, the video market is more forgiving than the theatrical one, so presumably he has no objections to Anchor Bay’s disc arriving in time to spread a little post-Yuletide anti-cheer.
This Anniversary Edition is also appearing long enough after the Bay’s previous release of Hellbound that its supplemental pleasures more than temper any double-dipping pain. The movie deserves the revisiting, too, as it represents a best-case scenario for a horror sequel (or a follow-up in any genre, for that matter). Unlike the subsequent HELLRAISERs, which plunked Cenobite villain Pinhead (Doug Bradley) down in unrelated (and, as the series went on, pre-existing) scenarios, the Peter Atkins-scripted Hellbound directly continues the...

So the 5th annual Rock and Shock convention in Worcester, Ma has come and gone and I have to say, this show keeps getting better and better as its reputation grows and word spreads about it.
The big draw for this year’s show was Lost Boys star Corey Haim, who was joined by Aliens and Terminator badass Michael Biehn, a Hellraiser reunion that included Doug Bradley, Ashley Laurence, Simon Bamford and Barbie Wilde, Rock and Shock alum Jack Ketchum, Jason Mewes, Brian O’Halloran, Waxwork star Zach Galligan, and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper . That’s a damn fine lineup and actually only a partial list of horror luminaries fans finally got the chance to have some face time with.
Friday night started way too early, at least for those of us who were helping out the ever-diligent Nomad get the Dread Central table ready, but overall the crowd was kickin...
