- Most films based on a book based on a true story are heartwarming, life affirming, and just plain dull. But maybe not this one. Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to Robert Whiting's Tokyo Underworld: The Fast Times and Hard Life of an American Gangster in Japan. The book, published in 2000, follows Nick Zappetti, an unlucky Italian-American in Japan. After a series of thwarted adventures, he does what any Italian-American would do halfway across the world: he opens a pizza place. As we all know, where there's pizza, there's the mob; accordingly, Zappetti's business becomes a prime hangout for the yakuza, Japan's most notorious gang.Whiting, who still lives in Japan and works as a journalist, has been hired as a consultant. Frank Baldwin is set to adapt the book.Dan Lin and Harry and Mary Jane Ufland will be producing....
