The nominations for the Costume Designers Guild Awards will be released on Wednesday, recognizing the achievements of the artisans that created some of the most memorable outfits and clothing designs of the year. Following the 10-month eligibility window, the community of over 1,200 members separates the film categories into three groups — contemporary, period and sci-fi/fantasy.
The distinctions between contemporary and period tend to get blurred, especially with modern subjects like Princess Diana in “Spencer” and Venus and Serena Williams in “King Richard” among the selections. However, per the CDG rules, “any entry with at least 51% of all costumes existing in a historical era greater than 25 years [on or before December 31, 1995] from the current entry year will be considered a period entry.”
That puts Jacqueline Durran (“Spencer”) and Sharen Davis (“King Richard”) into the period film field, where it’s indisputably the most competitive. Three of the five nominees from CDG typically translate to an...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including last year’s winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2022 Oscars predictions for Best Costume Design.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 72 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2019 winner “Black Panther,” and recent...

“You’ve been commissioned to write a 90-page screenplay, not ‘War and Peace.'” With these airy words, in the opening minutes of “Blithe Spirit,” exasperated trophy wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) admonishes her first-time screenwriter husband Charles (Dan Stevens) as he twitchily battles writers’ block. Then she adds a kicker: “How can it be so difficult to adapt a story you’ve already written?” If her frustration with the whiny, self-absorbed Charles is hardly misplaced, her assumptions about screenwriting are nonetheless off-base. Penning a good, short, pithy screenplay is no easy feat, even when working from solidly proven source material — and one need look no further than “Blithe Spirit,” a tin-eared, lumpen-footed, almost perversely unfunny new spin on Noël Coward’s breezy 1940s farce, for proof.

In HBO’s Watchmen, costume designer Meghan Kasperlik found the opportunity to put her stamp on a classic comic book world, first brought to life by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore.
Created by Damon Lindelof, the gritty drama is set in an alternate reality, exploring episodes of racial violence erupting in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as the police face off with a white supremacist group known as the Seventh Kavalry. Putting themselves in the middle of this mayhem are a number of superheroes, each with their own idiosyncratic fashions.
In her first interview with Lindelof and executive producer Tom Spezialy, Kasperlik didn’t know what series was being made—and while she’d seen Zack Snyder’s 2009 film adaptation of Watchmen, she wasn’t as familiar with the graphic novels on which it was based.
Pitching herself for the project without seeing a single outline or script, Kasperlik was immediately drawn to...

Greg Kinnear (“Little Miss Sunshine”), Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”), Keeley Hawes (“Bodyguard”), Rhys Ifans (“Notting Hill”) and Phyllis Logan (“Downton Abbey”) have joined the cast of “Misbehaviour,” alongside the previously announced Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha Raw and Jessie Buckley.
Principal photography began Monday on the dramedy, based on the true story of the 1970 Miss World contest and its disruption by the newly founded Women’s Liberation Movement. The film, which will shoot in and around London over the next nine weeks, is directed by Philippa Lowthorpe (“Three Girls”) from an original script written by Rebecca Frayn (“The Lady”) with revisions by Gaby Chiappe (“Their Finest”).
The action takes place in 1970, as the Miss World competition takes place in London, hosted by Bob Hope, to be played by Kinnear. (Manville plays Dolores Hope.) At the time, Miss World was the most-watched TV show in the world, with more than 100 million viewers.

“Audiences will have their sense of humanity refreshed.”
Actors Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West, director Matthew Warchus and the filmmakers of Pride discuss the background of this emotional story in the new featurette.
Critics are already cheering the film. “Breakout British hit is a warm, witty triumph,” says Digital Spy.
The Hollywood News writes, “Pride really is a thing of beauty.”
Pride is inspired by an extraordinary true story.
It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.

Starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, and Paddy Considine, the first trailer for Pride is here.
In their Cannes 2014 review, HeyUGuys‘ Jo-Ann Titmarsh wrote: “A feel-good movie about the 1984 miners’ strike, Thatcherism and the scourge of Aids is a tough nut, but with Pride Matthew Warchus has cracked it. Garnering an ovation on its premiere here in Cannes, Pride can certainly feel proud of itself.”
The screenplay is from Stephen Beresford, whose debut stage play, The Last of the Haussmans (starring Julie Walters), was a critical and commercial hit at the National Theatre in 2012.
It’s the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.
