The Unexpecteds is one of those films you wish they would remake instead of a classic. That’s not to put the film down. Far from it. You see the potential in writer and director Alejandro Montoya Marin’s first feature-length film. The story is timely and engaging, and the script has some well-timed jokes. However, this comedy caper never quite reaches its potential.
The reason is glaring and obvious—the cast’s flat and wooden performances. And that’s a shame because this “Dumb Money Light” could have been something embraced. If only the cast could have found the heart of the matter, at least enough for the audience to embrace the characters from The Unexpecteds and care.

“Something that we were all really drawn to is the ornamentation of the Victorian era,” explains “Manhunt” production designer Chloe Arbiture about taking a bolder approach to designing over 200 sets for what a well-known period in history: the aftermath of the assassination of the 16th U.S. President. “We wanted modern audiences to relate to it and to feel like there was a stake in it,” she explains about her team’s focus on ornamentation, decoration and detail. “When we look through; I mean even I’m guilty of it, but when I look through black and white photographs, I don’t really feel like this big human connection to things. But we all talked about how what makes the story human is color, is richness, is detail, and that’s something that really drove us through the entire creative process from the beginning to the end.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Our planet can be absolutely terrifying. From unpredictable earthquakes to monstrous storms, there’s really no shortage of ways in which our cosmic home can kill us. And yet, our species perseveres, with humanity going so far as to entertain itself by telling stories about how we can overcome – or at the very least survive – the fury of nature. In fact, these stories have become so prevalent in popular culture that disaster movies are known to be one of the most profitable genres in all of cinema, and while some audiences remain critical so-called “disaster-porn,” I’d argue that the best of these films are really about the endurance of the human spirit.
And if you’re planning on telling a story about people coming to terms with how fragile they are when confronted with nature, why not place the camera in the hands of your own main characters? I mean,...

Shakira shared her belated Barbie take in a new interview with Allure, saying she agreed “to a certain extent” with her two sons, who found the movie “emasculating.”
The musician was asked about Greta Gerwig’s hit film during a discussion about women’s empowerment and her hope that her upcoming album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women No Longer Cry) would “help women discover their own strengths.” While that’s arguably kind of the whole point of Barbie, Shakira said her sons “absolutely hated the movie,” adding, “They felt that it was emasculating.

Shakira graces the cover of Allure magazine and holds nothing back when asked about her thoughts on “Barbie,” the Greta Gerwig-directed blockbuster that topped the 2023 box office with $1.4 billion worldwide and earned eight Oscar nominations, including best picture. The music icon said she somewhat agreed with her two sons who strongly disliked “Barbie,” suggesting that it was a piece of pop culture that robbed “men of their possibility to be men.”
“My sons absolutely hated it,” Shakira said. “They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. [This story contains spoilers from the two-part season premiere of Manhunt.]
In an era of TV police and crime series like CSI and The Killing, using the forensic investigation of a crime scene, including DNA and fingerprints, to help find a killer and solve a murder is commonplace.
So Monica Beletsky, the creator of Apple TV+’s Manhunt miniseries, had a challenge when adapting the pursuit of Abraham Lincoln’s killer as a true-crime detective thriller, because Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, and the 12-day hunt for John Wilkes Booth that followed, took place well before real-life forensic science and the gathering of evidence at crime scenes had been established.
“I love the idea of, how do you find this needle in a haystack, this man who could be anywhere in North America, when you don’t have a phone, you don’t have cars or video cameras? There’s no 24-hour news,” Beletsky explains to the The Hollywood Reporter.

The seven-episode ”Manhunt” tells the incredible story of the search for John Wilkes Booth (portrayed by Irish actor Anthony Boyle) in the aftermath of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln (Hamish Linklater). The limited series, of which the first two episodes are now streaming, is adapted from James L. Swanson’s book “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer,” and while it’s a historical drama, it’s anything but dry. Described by Apple as a conspiracy thriller about one of America’s best known but least understood crimes, the show also has a perfectly deployed sense of humor, making it more than meets the eye.

In their long-running quest to sow xenophobia among the American populace, some on the far right have accused migrants of every imaginable crime. Donald Trump declared them rapists and falsely claimed that the violent street gang Ms-13 was invading the country on a massive scale. GOP legislators have argued, with scant evidence, that the fentanyl crisis can be blamed on drug smugglers entering the U.S. illegally. There are bogus claims about noncitizens committing voter fraud, and the outbreak of war in the Middle East last fall even led to...

While Elon Musk may enjoy diving into the world of Elden Ring, not everything about the gaming community is to his liking. The former CEO of X likes to take to the platform and vent his grievances, and he has done the same regarding the Sweet Baby Inc. controversy.
Sweet Baby Inc. has been in the news for a while now, and the reputation they have gained over the past few weeks has not been the best. If anything, they have reignited the culture war between progressives and conservatives, with Elon Musk now throwing his opinion into the mix as well.

Becky G took the Oscars stage to perform “The Fire Inside” from the Eva Longoria-directed film Flamin’ Hot.
Diane Warren wrote the song for the film about Richard Montañez, the Frito-Lay janitor who became an executive after inventing Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
Ahead of the ceremony at the Dolby Theater, Longoria talked about the excitement her directorial debut getting some recognition at the Academy Awards.
“I have goosebumps. I can’t believe it. I can because Diane Warren wrote the song, so she’s a genius and Becky G is a genius,” Longoria told Laverne Cox on Live from E! red carpet coverage. “Their performance tonight… You will never be more proud to be a Latino and a Chicano, but Becky’s thought and love that she put into this performance tonight is going to blow everybody away. She has some special guest from Inglewood.”
She continued, “We don’t ever get this platform.

Few moments are more infamous in American history than the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. After years of fighting the Civil War, Lincoln had finally completed his task. With Lee’s surrender, he wanted to move forward with the act of reconstruction. Obviously, we know John Wilkes Booth cut that time short, but the story behind Booth’s capture proves thrilling throughout Manhunt. Excellent craftwork and a committed cast help Manhunt one of the sleeper achievements of 2024 on TV.
Manhunt – The Plot
The new Apple TV+ series centers on two stories – Booth (Anthony Boyle) as part of a larger conspiracy and Edwin Stanton’s (Tobias Menzies) hunt for the traitors. Over the course of the series, we watch as Booth and his compatriots move the final pieces into position to kill Lincoln. When the right opportunity presents itself, their three-pronged plan springs into action. Simultaneously, we watch Stanton move from a role as U.

Plot: Based on the Edgar Award-winning non-fiction book from author James L. Swanson, “Manhunt” is a conspiracy thriller about one of the best known but least understood crimes in history, the astonishing story of the hunt for John Wilkes Booth in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
Review: The life and untimely death of Abraham Lincoln have been fodder for film and television since the invention of the medium. Before that, books and stage plays told the story of the President who ended the Civil War, abolished slavery, and died unceremoniously. But, in all of the tales of Honest Abe and his killer, John Wilkes Booth, few have chronicled the tumultuous aftermath between Ford’s Theater and the capture of those who perpetrated the heinous murder. Aside from Robert Redford’s The Conspirator, which focused on the trial of Booth’s accomplices, we have never gotten a full retelling of the events.

I have been thinking a lot about Nex Benedict, the 16-year-old transgender student who died on Feb. 8, a day after allegedly being assaulted in the restroom at Owasso High School in Oklahoma. Although Nex’s death is still being investigated, his grandmother has said he had been bullied in the past for his identity. Plenty of American traditions surround Super Bowl Sunday: good food, overproduced commercials, the Puppy Bowl, and having octopi (and other animals) predict the game’s outcome are just a few. But in recent years one tradition has consistently threatened to ruin everyone’s fun, that being right-wingers spending more time fuming about their pet political and cultural grievances than actually enjoying the game.

Review: Suncoast was a late Sundance surprise for me. I wasn’t expecting much from the film, and I entertained the idea of waiting for it to hit Hulu (it has a Feb 9 release date). Still, I found myself unexpectedly charmed by this Searchlight release, which is the kind of crowdpleaser the festival audience loves, with the theatre I saw this in packed with sobbing attendees by the time the credits rolled.
Suncoast was a refreshing change of pace from some of the heavier fare I’ve been watching here, with it refreshingly optimistic and upbeat, even if it deals with grim subject matter.

It can feel discordant to see someone mourning amid the pastel-hued bungalows of a beach-bound town, beneath a blue sky. Not that single mom Kristine is grieving exactly in bittersweet, comedic Sundance drama “Suncoast” — a fact Laura Linney’s character makes decidedly clear to a counselor at the hospice center of the title. After all, her son Max (a very still Cree Kawa), who’s dying of brain cancer, isn’t gone yet; he’s just no longer there.
Daughter Doris (Nico Parker), however, is still very present, and she’s bristling under years of Kristine’s not-grieving and Max’s unresolved state. If that sounds harsh, it really isn’t. In her semi-autobiographical directorial debut, Laura Chinn places her sympathies with the child who isn’t ill, at least at the outset. Doris has been conscripted into the kind of caretaking that can tax even the most trained of adults,...
