- A London-based group composed of singer Brett Anderson, drummer Simon Gilbert, bassist Mat Osman, guitarist Richard Oakes (who replaced Bernard Butler in 1994/5), and keyboardist Alex Lee (formerly of Strangelove, who replaced Neil Codling, Gilbert's cousin, who retired in March 2001 because of ME, or chronic fatigue syndrome).
- Richard Oakes joined in 1994 after original guitarist Bernard Butler, often hailed as the best of his generation, quit. He was 17 years old at the time.
- Appeared on the cover of Melody Maker, proclaiming them "best band in Britain" before they even released their debut single.
- Anderson attended University College London; Osman attended London School of Economics; both dropped out before receiving degrees. Codling attended the University of Hull and graduated with a second in English and drama, probably the only member of the group who holds a university degree.
- A former manager was Ricky Gervais.
