When prospective students of the University of Southern California visit the school, tour guides like to point out several noteworthy landmarks on campus: Heritage Hall and its multiple Heisman trophies on display, the symbolic Tommy Trojan statue and Norris Cinema Theatre, where students of all majors congregate each Thursday night to watch and discuss cinema with famed film critic Leonard Maltin.
The class, officially titled Ctcs-466: Theatrical Film Symposium, was founded by a fellow critic, Arthur Knight, in the early 1960s. He proposed filmmakers bring their latest work to campus for youthful, eager minds to absorb and discuss. Stewardship of the class passed to L.A. Times critic Charles Champlin in 1985, and eventually, the opportunity to take over one of USC’s most popular electives was presented to Maltin.

Quentin Tarantino worked alongside Scott Pilgrim star Mary Elizabeth Winstead for the first time in his feature Death Proof. Before she was cast, however, Winstead was determined to work with the filmmaker. So much so that she was advised not to wear shoes to increase her chances.
How Mary Elizabeth Winstead ended up working with Quentin Tarantino on ‘Death Proof’ Mary Elizabeth Winstead | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Winstead was already a fan of Tarantino before their collaboration. So when she first got wind that the filmmaker wanted her for Death Proof, she didn’t need to read the movie’s script. She was already on board to do the feature.

Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

Actor Denzel Washington, considered a leading man, normally doesn’t have to audition for film projects. And it’s a privilege the actor appreciates, seeing as he really doesn’t like fighting other stars for movies.

Washington, like most A-list stars, has built up enough good will that he no longer has to audition for film roles. According to the actor’s own memory, he hasn’t auditioned since the 80s.
“The last time I auditioned for a role was the 1980s,” Washington once said according to The Grio. “I did a little screen test for Cry Freedom in 1986, that’s the last time I remember.”

The late singer Ray Charles was instrumental in the casting process of his 2004 biopic Ray. Charles wanted to make sure the actor portraying him would be able to do him justice, insisting to meet Foxx in person.
After their encounter, Foxx’s audition meant trying to hang with Charles on the piano. According to Ray director Taylor Hackford, that was the day Foxx proved himself to the musician. Although not without some difficulty.

A stand-out in virtually every project he’s part of, we’re always ready for another performance from John Hawkes. His latest film, Too Late, finds him as a private investigator in Los Angeles hunting down a missing woman. However, it likely won’t be the story that gets talked about most (at least initially) when it comes to Dennis Hauck’s feature, but rather the structure and exhibition. It’s composed of five acts, each a single, uncut 20-minute-plus shot (roughly the length of an entire projected film reel), and it’s being released in the now-rare, 35mm-exclusive format starting next month.

The Bahamas International Film Festival (Biff) has announced that Academy Award® winner and renowned global icon Sir Sidney Poitier has agreed to the naming of the prestigious Career Achievement Award at the Bahamas International Film Festival the “Sir Sidney Poitier Tribute Award.” Biff founder and executive director Leslie Vanderpool made the announcement.
“There is no person on Earth who is better suited to have the Career Achievement Award be named after him,” Vanderpool said. “Poitier is one of the finest actors for generations and is, simply put, an icon and a legend.” The American Film Institute named him among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time.
Poitier stretched his reach within the industry on film and on stage acting in productions such as "A Raisin in the Sun" (1959) and "Lysistrata." For his film role in "The Defiant Ones," Poitier was the first male actor of African descent to be nominated for a competitive Academy Award in 1958. A few years later in 1964, Poitier was the first black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in a riveting and memorable performance as Homer Smith in Ralph Nelson’s "Lilies of The Field."
Thirty-eight years after receiving the Best Actor award, Poitier received an honorary tribute from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in recognition of his remarkable accomplishments as an artist and as a human being. In 2009, Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States of America’s highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.
A global legend, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1968 and highly respected author, director and “actor’s actor,” with more than fifty films and television shows to his credit, Poitier has starred in some of Hollywood’s most important and biggest films and earned critics’ praise for several commanding performances. Poitier’s reputation solidified with leading roles in mainstream films: "No Way Out" (1950), "Blackboard Jungle" (1955), "The Bedford Incident" and "A Patch Of Blue" (1965). The most successful films that catapulted Poitier’s career in 1967 where, "To Sir with Love," "Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner" and "In the Heat of the Night."
Directing was not far away from his achievements having a directorial debut with the western "Buck and the Preacher" soon followed by "Uptown Saturday Night," "Let’s Do It Again," "A Piece Of The Action," "Stir Crazy," "Hanky Panky," "Fast Forward’ and ‘Ghost Dad."
From 1995 to 2003, Poitier served as a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company. Proud to represent The Bahamas, Sir Sidney was the Bahamian Ambassador to Japan, a position held from 2002 to 2007, while being the Ambassador of The Bahamas to Unesco.
What makes this addition so momentous is that he is a Bahamian who believes in building future generations of filmmakers while honoring the actors and actresses who broke ground, furthermore, upholding their careers with poise. Sir Sidney possesses a true love and appreciation for the people of The Bahamas.
One of the Bahamas International Film Festival’s missions is to ensure youth in The Bahamas have the opportunity to remember Sir Sidney while celebrating the achievements of others within the film industry.
“Leslie Vanderpool’s efforts have been extraordinary in making it possible for The Bahamas to have not only a film festival, but to also attract some of the great film artists and filmmakers from around the world. People like Johnny Depp, Nicolas Cage, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Glover, Alan Arkin, Sir Sean Connery, Sophie Okonedo, Lee Daniels, Lenny Kravitz and my own daughter Sydney Tamiia Poitier, who have found, to their great surprise, that the Bahamas is moving swiftly toward a bona fide motion picture community--all of which have been structured by the imaginative young Bahamians who have committed themselves to The Bahamas having a film community of its own,” Poitier said.
Adding to his many achievements, Poitier has published four best sellers "This Life," "The Measure of A Man," "Life Beyond Measure: Letters to my Great-Grand Daughter" and "Montaro Caine." Additionally, he has many talents having recorded an album with the composer Fred Katz called ‘Poitier Meets Plato’ reciting passages from Plato’s writings.
Family is most important for Sir Sidney, He and his wife Joanna Shimkus, a Canadian-born former actress of Lithuanian and Irish descent have two daughters Anika and Sydney Tamiia Poitier. Poitier has four daughters Beverly, Pamela, Sherri and Gina from a previous marriage. In addition to his six daughters, Poitier has eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Leslie Vanderpool and Sydney T. Poitier will be instrumental in overseeing the granting of the Sir Sidney Poitier Tribute Awards.

It’s December. And you know what that means? It means for every popcorn blockbuster, we get about three Oscar bait movies that are made solely to appease that body of somewhat stodgy Academy voters. Don’t get me wrong – a good portion of the Best Picture winners in history are still some of the greatest films ever made – “The Godfather” (Parts I and II), “Schindler’s List,” etc. But what about those historically good movies that got the nomination, but didn’t take home the prize? What about those popular movies that carried fan support, but lost out to a smaller, most of the time better, film? Well, here they are. This list focuses on those films that may or may not have been produced as Oscar bait, but earned the recognition of “Best Picture nominee,” only to walk away without the big prize. As usual, not in order of worst to best.

Paul Robeson would've been 116 years old this year, if he were still alive (April 9, 1898, is his birthday). With all the talk of an N.W.A, Tupac, Aaliyah, and other biopics of black public figures, I'd say that a Paul Robeson biopic is long overdue, given the man and his accomplishments - frankly, far more-so than any of the previously mentioned. And one just might be coming to a theater near you soon, starring co-star of Showtime's hit drama series "Homeland," British actor David Harewood, as Robeson, and Sydney Tamiia Poitier (daughter of Sidney Poitier) as Paul Robeson’s wife, Eslanda ("Essie") Goode...

For the first time in its 11-year history, Thruline is promoting someone within the management company to partner. That’s Steve Kavovit, who joined Thruline as a manager in 2004. His clients include two-time Emmy winner Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), Chris Lowell (Enlisted), Dakota Goyo (Real Steel), Reece Ritchie (Hercules), Adhir Kalyan (Rules Of Engagement), Yael Grobglas (Reign), Lee Ingleby (Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban) and Sydney Tamiia Poitier (Chicago Pd). Kavovit joins the four existing partners, Thruline founders Chris Henze, Ron West and Jb Roberts, as well as Willie Mercer, who merged his Rozon-Mercer Management with Thruline in 2005. “Steve has been a dedicated member of our team for a decade and has consistently shown both a keen eye for spotting new talent and a deftness in helping to guide careers,” the partners said today in a joint statement.

An unexpected choice; but glad to see the man working. Vondie Curtis-Hall will replace South African director Darrell Roodt (Winnie) to helm Four Stars International's Paul Robeson biopic, which British actor David Harewood, was attached to star in. Sydney Tamiia Poitier (daughter of Sidney Poitier) was also attached to the project, to play Paul Robeson’s wife, Eslanda ("Essie") Goode Robeson. I say both actor were attached because, according to a new Variety report, the producers have opted to read other actors for the the lead role specifically - meaning, Harewood may actually no longer be involved. According to Variety, in an effort to fast-track its remake of the 1970s Bill Cosby-Sydney Poitier comedy “Uptown Saturday Night,” Warner Bros. has hired “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” helmer Nicholas Stoller to do a rewrite on the script.
Will Smith and Denzel Washington will star and Adam McKay is on board to direct for Warner Bros. Pictures. McKay wants this to be his next film.
The original came out in 1974 and starred Sydney Poitier and Bill Cosby as two guys who sneak out of their house one night to visit an illegal nightclub. While there their wallets get stolen, one of which contains a winning lottery ticket. Poitier directed it and the two went on to team up in a few more films, all directed by Poitier.
Timothy Dowling wrote the most recent draft.

Yet another remake/reboot/off-shoot/spin-off/whatever you want to call it of George Romero’s classic Night Of The Living Dead. This one will be in 3D, of course. It comes from Simon West Productions, Graphic Film Company, 2020 Entertainment and Indus Media and Entertainment, and will be titled Night Of The Living Dead: Origins 3D. Starring in the film will be Tony Todd (aka Candyman; although some may not be aware that he starred in a remake of Night Of The Living Dead in 1990 playing Ben, the character originated by the late Duane Jones in Romero's 1968 original), and also Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Tom Sizemore, Bill Mosley, and Bollywood...

Because one 3D remake was not enough, George Romero‘s 1968 horror classic Night of the Living Dead will be resurrected once more, this time by director Zebediah de Soto as Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D. As you might have briefly registered somewhere in your mind, there was a 3D Night of the Living Dead remake in 2006, as well as a follow-up called Night of the Living Dead 3D: Reanimation. To put it bluntly, they were not great. De Soto has the power of time and quality on his side, though. He has a solid cast, consisting of Bollywood star R. Madhavan, and a slew of B-movie horror favorites, like Tom Sizemore, Tony Todd (who was actually in Tom Savini’s 1990 remake), Danielle Harris, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Bill Mosley, Sarah Habel and Joseph Pilato battling the zombies. And when I say time, I mean that we are now in the hey-day of zombie-themed programming. Romero...

When George A. Romero created Night of the Living Dead, the movie originally carried the title Night of the Flesh Eaters. The title was changed at the last moment and the copyright was lost, immediately putting the film into public domain.
That means that anyone can remake or re-imagine the movie and one of the newer projects is Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D. The movie has been in development for a number of years now, but it’s alive and well and we have a new casting update:

Next on the remake train is George Romero's zombie classic Night of the Living Dead. But this one is getting very weird.
The supporting cast is pretty standard, a who's who of genre faces: Tony Todd, Danielle Harris, Tom Sizemore, Bill Mosely, Sydney Tamiia Poitier (Grindhouse), Sarah Habel (Hostel III), Joseph Pilato (the original Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead), and Alona Tal (Cult). But the male lead, starring opposite Danielle Harris, is a Bollywood star named R. Madhavan in what appears to be his first American film. Interesting, but not too weird. The director and co-writer is Zebediah De Soto, in his feature film debut. This is also the first script from the two other credited screenwriters, Warren Davis II and David Reuben Schwartz.
But then it gets downright strange. The story is no longer set in a cemetery, but a NYC apartment building, where...

Get ready for a Bollywood dance number with zombies.
Simon West Productions, Graphic Film Company, 2020 Entertainment and Indus Media and Entertainment are all teaming to create "Night Of The Living Dead: Origins 3D," a (very) loose remake of the George Romero classic.
The story follows a group of survivors who barricade themselves in an abandoned New York apartment building when the zombie plague breaks out.
The project is also being shot "in a CG setting using stereoscopic 3D" which will give the film a look described as a "hybrid of graphic novel and traditional animation."
Bollywood actor R. Madhavan leads a cast that includes Tony Todd, Tom Sizemore, Danielle Harris, Sarah Habel, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Bill Mosley and Joseph Pilato.
Zebediah De Soto will helm from a script he co-wrote with Warren Davis II and David Reuben Schwartz.

For me, the hallowed ground horror movies are John Carpenter‘s Halloween, Jonathan Demme‘s The Silence Of The Lambs, Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, William Friedkin‘s The Exorcist, and especially Night Of The Living Dead. George Romero’s atmospheric original created the template for the contemporary zombie, and I always thought it would be very difficult to follow in the lumbering footsteps of George’s army of flesh eaters with a remake. Well, get ready for what is being called a 3D re-imagining of the classic. Simon West Productions, and the Graphic Film Company, in association with 2020 Entertainment and Indus Media and Entertainment, have set Bollywood actor R. In Part One of our interview with Sarah Jones, we talked with the actress about how she came to play the bisexual veteran nurse in Kendra. Now that all eight episodes of the Wigs series have been posted, we asked Sarah to answer some of our questions about Kendra's motivations both personally and professionally.
AfterEllen.com: What is the relationship that Kendra has with her roommates?
Sarah Jones: Her grandfather, he and his wife, surrogate grandfather. They took her in when she has no one and put her through nursing school and really got her on her feet, helped her out when she didn't have anyone else. The men that she lives with in the apartment are also veterans and through that community they sort of formed this makeshift family I guess you could say where the four of them live together and help each other out.
