Denise Nickerson, who played the bratty, bloated Violet Beauregarde in 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and a sweet-natured orphan bedeviled by ghosts and werewolves on the classic ’60s supernatural soap Dark Shadows, died Wednesday night at a hospital near her home in Colorado. In declining health since suffering a stroke last year, Nickerson was removed from life support by her family earlier that day. She was 62.
Nickerson’s son Josh Nickerson posted news of his mother’s death on Facebook after keeping friends and fans apprised of her health issues. Denise Nickerson was a longtime attendee at fan conventions for both Wonka and Dark Shadows.
“She’s gone,” Nickerson’s family posted on Facebook.
Born in New York City in 1957, Nickerson began acting on shows including The Doctors and Flipper before landing her breakthrough role in 1968 as little Amy Jennings on Dan Curtis’ gothic soap opera Dark Shadows. Teamed with young David Henesy,...

The new musical “The Prom” won over industry folks with its big heart and bevy of Broadway insider jokes. But many wondered where each member of the ensemble cast would compete at this year’s Tony Awards. While the Tony Administration Committee decided Brooks Ashmanskas would be the sole Lead Actor contender, they went the opposite route with the women. Beth Leavel and Caitlin Kinnunen will each compete for Lead Actress in a Musical. So can they both land bids?
Leavel, a Tony winner for “The Drowsy Chaperone,” plays vain Broadway diva Dee Dee Allen. She and her fellow thespians head to a small town in Indiana to help Emma (Kinnunen) bring her girlfriend to the high school prom…and scoop up some much needed press in the process. It’s the type of over the top, scene-chewing role in which Leavel always excels. Two of her big numbers bring...

I thought throwing out my Annie CDs would be easy--i thought I only had one Obviously that would be the indispensable Original Broadway Cast Recording with Dorothy Loudon and Andrea McArdle. How wrong I was I knew that, as a kid, I had the tape of the 1982 movie soundtrack with Carol Burnett and Aileen Quinn and an all-star supporting cast, but I didn't remember buying it on CD. And when the hell did I get the CD of the 1999 TV version with Kathy Bates and an all-star cast And, oh yeah... I forgot about this studio album from the 90s with studio cast queen Kim Criswell--I think I bought back in the day somehow convincing myself Ruthie Henshall was playing Annie. Spoiler alert She plays Grace. Oh, and I do remember this '30thAnniversary' deluxe production with Chicago area diva and original star of the sequel, Annie Warbucks Alene Robertson...

The upcoming remake of "Annie" just unspooled its first trailer which looks (and sounds) promising. This updated version of the 1977 Tony Award winner for Best Musical has Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild") as the winsome orphan and Oscar champ Jamie Foxx ("Ray") as her benefactor. Also on hand is Cameron Diaz as the hard-hearted Miss Hannigan, foster mother to a brood that includes Annie. Dorothy Loudon originated the role on Broadway and won the Tony over, among others, Andrea McArdle, the little girl who first belted out "Tomorrow." While Wallis may not possess as fine a set of pipes as McArdle, she sure is charming in the first trailer for the flick which is Columbia's big Christmas release. (Below, watch the trailer and let us know what you think in the comments section) -Break- Whether it will works it charms on the Oscars will depend on...

Anne Marie here to talk about the latest movie musical news. It’s official: Cameron Diaz will be the Miss Hannigan to Quvenzhané Wallis’s Little Orphan Annie in Will Smith’s Annie remake. Sandra Bullock turned it down so Diaz joins a brassy line of comediennes who've played this role including Dorothy Loudon, Betty Hutton, Carol Burnett, Nell Carter, Kathy Bates, Katie Finneran and most recently Jane Lynch in her Broadway musical debut.
Miss Hannigan History (Partial): Carol Burnett (82); Nell Carter (97); Kathy Bates (99); Cameron Diaz (14)
Accusations of stunt casting have already echoed through Hollywood and Broadway, but how true are they?
While the decision to cast an otherwise musically-untested star like Diaz (Her singing in The Mask was dubbed) may smack a bit of stunt casting, Diaz certainly has the comedic background to fulfill the terrifying-but-hilarious shoes of the booze-soaked orphanage matron. Cameron Diaz has shown all throughout...

Cheerios, rejoice! Jane Lynch, who won an Emmy as sharp-tongued cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester on Fox’s Glee, will make her Broadway debut this spring in the hit musical revival of Annie. The role seems like a perfect fit for the star: Miss Hannigan, the drunken and scheming head of young Annie’s orphanage who melodically complains about being surrounded by “little girls.” Lynch, an Illinois native who got her start in theater at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Second City, will appear in the musical for eight weeks only, from May 16 through July 14.

Actress Julia Barr returns to the television role she played for 30 years which earned her eight Emmy Award nominations, Brooke English on All My Children. The actress will tape a week of episodes in August, which will air in September -- the final shows of the daytime drama to be televised on the ABC Television Network.
Barr joined the show in 1976 and left in 2006. In 2010, by popular demand, she returned for a three month run, pairing Brooke with actor David Canary’s character Adam Chandler, one of her long-time loves.
In making the announcement Barr said, “I am thrilled to be back on the show personally and professionally for what will be an exciting and emotional time. I have no idea yet what brings Brooke back to Pine Valley, but trust that Lorraine Broderick -- AMC’s best head writer in the history of the show -- has something brilliant in the works.
