Italy’s Torino Film Festival will celebrate the centennial of Marlon Brando’s birth with a 24-title retrospective of films featuring the groundbreaking two-time Oscar winner, known for his naturalistic acting style and rebellious streak.
The Brando retro will be “the backbone” of the fest, according to its new artistic director, Italian actor/director Giulio Base. Accordingly, an image of Brando – photographed when he was shooting Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Last Tango in Paris” – is featured on the poster for the fest’s upcoming 42nd edition, which will run Nov. 22-30.
Torino is Italy’s preeminent event for young directors and indie cinema, and is where Matteo Garrone and Paolo Sorrentino screened their first works. The festival’s lineup will be announced at a later date.

In addition to being one of pop music’s most memorable artists of the past several decades, Britney Jean Spears dabbles in bringing her unique energy to the silver screen. The video, recorded 21 years ago, is going viral, displaying Spears’ emotional bid for the role she lost to Rachel McAdams.
In the video, Spears reads lines with Ryan Gosling. According to The Daily Mail, casting director Matthew Barry hid the tape for decades. Still, the video is out in the public eye, with Barry saying Spears impressed the producers with her soulful interpretation of The Notebook’s Allie.

What is it about the game of golf that makes good cinema? We can barely keep our eyes open during the PGA Tour. Its tranquil vibes are more relaxing than a glass of warm milk. And we can't name but a handful of players: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, er... Is there a famous "Dave" in there? Still, we could pop in and enjoy at least a dozen films about the sport at a moment's notice on a lazy Saturday afternoon. There's something majestic about the luscious greens, the stillness of the crowd, the whispered play-by-play, and the distant thwack of a ball that translates to the big screen.
Or maybe it's the class struggle, as golf is seen as a gentleman's sport designed for the wealthy. A round of golf at Pebble Beach will set you back nearly 600! Or perhaps we're intoxicated by the psychology of the game,...

The Weinstein Company assets will be purchased by the Ron Burkle-backed Maria Contreras-Sweet, and all things Weinstein will be removed from whatever remains. After a nearly four-decade run, the legacy of the most successful specialized distributor in history comes down to the last five tumultuous months that mark an inglorious (if not inglourious) end.
The Weinsteins made its first big Oscar splash in 1990 with “My Left Foot,” but they’d already been around for some time. Writer-director Jeremy Leven shares a scene from his new film "Girl on a Bicycle," as well as insight into the complexities of editing a multi-lingual film. The film opens in select theaters this Valentine's Day. Film Synopsis: "Girl on a Bicycle" is a film conceived in the Billy Wilder genre – a comedic love story with mix-ups, misunderstandings, and complications, set in Paris, but the Paris of a “borderless” European Union where multiple nationalities now live and love. Though head-over-heels in love with Greta, Paolo can’t help but become distracted by the titular Girl on a Bicycle, Cécile, a beautiful French woman whose route home intersects with his bus tour route. His pursuit turns calamitous, and Paulo constructs a web of lies to hide this from Greta – who, of course, believes none of it. About the Sequence: This scene marks the transition between acts II and III. It is a...

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1995...
The year covered in this week's underrated movie rundown was significant for a number of reasons. It was the year that saw the release of Toy Story - the groundbreaking movie that would cement Pixar's reputation as an animation studio, and set the tempo for CG family movies for the next 18 years and counting. It was the year that saw James Bond (played by Pierce Brosnan for the first time) emerge for GoldenEye after a six-year break. It was also the year of Michael Mann's Heat, Dogme 95, and the moment where Terry Gilliam scored a much-deserved hit with 12 Monkeys.
As ever, we're focusing on a few of the lesser-known films from this particular year, and we've had to think carefully about what's made the cut and what hasn't.

Real Steel is an emotional father /son bonding film filled with giant boxing robots. The film.s strength comes from the stellar CGI that makes the robot boxers seem very real and the charisma of Hugh Jackman . who is charming and loveable even while selling his son. Based on the Richard Matheson (I Am Legend) short story "Steel," the film was directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum). It features a screenplay by John Gatins (Coach Carter) with story by Dan Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy) and Jeremy Leven (The Notebook). It features a great cast including Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand, Hope Davis, James Rebhorn, Marco Ruggeri, Karl Yune, and Olga Fonda. Set in the...

Real Steel is an interesting blend of the underdog sports movie and science fiction, and from the first frame, you know exactly what will happen by the time the end credits roll. There’s nothing wrong with that since we knew exactly what was coming in Rocky or Remember the Titans and both were strong, entertaining films. The challenge for the director and cast is to make arriving at the inevitable conclusion as entertaining as possible and in this case, the film exceeded expectations.
Coming out tomorrow for home video from Touchstone Home Entertainment, the Shawn Levy-directed film looks terrific and has rock solid sound so you hear the gears grinding and Danny Elfman’s score soar with fidelity.
The story is set in 2027, a time when human boxers have been replaced by oversized robotic creations that are basically Rock’Em Sock’Em Robots controlled by a video game interface.

Real Steel Directed by: Shawn Levy Written by: John Gatins (screenplay), Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven (story) Starring: Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand, Hope Davis, James Rebhorn Back when Real Steel was first announced, a lot of people thought it had to be a joke. Coming on the heels of a flurry of announcements about movies based on toys, this seemed like Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots brought to life on the big screen. While that may have been part of the inspiration, it's pretty clear that Real Steel probably owes the most to Michael Bay's Transformers. However, where Michael Bay continually tried to push Transformers in a more violent and "mature" direction, this movie melds giant f'n robots with a feel-good family-friendly core. And for the most part, it actually works. Hugh Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a down-on-his-luck ex-boxer who is now a small-time promoter.

From the billboards you might think this is another Transformers movie—heaven help us—when in fact, Real Steel is a cross between Rocky and The Champ. It’s formulaic and unashamedly manipulative, but it’s played with sincerity…and it works. This project has been in development for years, under Steven Spielberg’s watchful eye, and bears only superficial resemblance to the Richard Matheson story that inspired it. (You may remember its first adaptation, as a 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone called “Steel,” with— —Lee Marvin.) The screenplay is credited to John Gatins, with story credit to Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven. The time…...

Real Steel is a Frankenstein Monster of a film assembled from the spare parts, overheated cliches and hackneyed plots of dozens of terrible sports movies, combined with references to real boxing matches, built on the detached spine of a Twilight Zone episode and featuring robots that look like they were designed based on a 60′s kids toy.
Or to put it simpler: it’s Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots starring Wolverine.
And God did I love it.
There is always the question when you watch a film that alternates between funny and terrible sometimes in the same scene, whether the filmmaker intended the film to be funny/terrible or whether the humour is unintentional, but I think we can safely conclude that...

First full trailer from "Real Steel" has hit the web. Rather than focusing on the action, the newly-released video which is obtained via Yahoo! Movies pays more attention to the drama that builds up the film, including the father-son relationship.
At almost the same time, new posters from the sci-fi movie have also gone online. One of the posters highlights a robot called Noisy Boy. Other seven posters explain the rules for competing in the World Robot Boxing (Wrb).
Director Shawn Levy, in the meantime, has opened up what he wanted to feature in the movie. Speaking in a recent interview, the director said he wanted to highlight "the father-son drama, the emotion, the kind of rousing sports movie, the Americana of it." He also admitted that the robo-boxing scenes are pieces "of a broader spectrum".
In addition to sharing his idea for the film's storyline, Levy spoke about Hugh Jackman...

Apparently, the folks at DreamWorks like what they see of director Shawn Levy's (Date Night) new movie, Real Steel, because the studio is already prepping for a sequel. According to Deadline, John Gatins, who wrote the screenplay for Real Steel from a story by Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven, has been hired to begin work on the next installment. This is somewhat unusual considering the first movie won't debut in theaters for another six months and the property is not a known franchise (yet), but Deadline speculates that the decision is based on "strong response to internal screenings" at DreamWorks and because of the reaction the footage received at a screening at the recent CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas.

Comedy is of course the most difficult of genres to sell internationally. Something that Germans find uproariously funny leaves English speakers stony-faced – and vice-versa. Yet Oscar-winning German producers Max Wiedemann and Quirin Berg are currently shooting Girl On a Bicycle, their first venture into English language production, starring Vincenzo Amato (Did You Hear About the Morgans?), Nora Tschirner, Louise Monot, and Paddy Considine. The director is Don Juan De Marco's Jeremy Leven, writer of The Notebook and The Legend of Bagger Vance. “We always had it in mind to produce English-language movies. Our aim is to produce one English-language film every year or every 2 years and at least one feature for the German market a year,” co-founder Wiedemann tells me. This strategy follows the pair's worldwide success with their first movie The Lives of Others, which won the Best Foreign Language Oscar in 2007. It was directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck...

Chicago – Sometimes all it takes is a glance at a film’s poster to know where it’s stepped wrong. The poster for “My Sister’s Keeper” shows photogenic stars Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin smiling at each other, while their saintly co-star (Sofia Vassilieva) drifts below them, blowing bubbles. Anyone who has read Jodi Picoult’s book (on which this film is based) will know that there’s no reason why these two characters should be smiling at each other, except to fool audiences into thinking this is some kind of heartwarming feel-good drama. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what filmmaker Nick Cassavetes intends to transform his source material into, and the resulting film fails to grapple with the issues Picoult’s book boldly addresses.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
The premise holds great promise: eleven-year-old Anna (Breslin) was genetically engineered and conceived by her parents to be a donor to her sister...

How's this for an unexpected switcheroo?
Action director Peter Berg, who had been talking with DreamWorks about taking on the studio's futuristic robot boxing movie "Real Steel," has moved on, opening up the gig to Shawn Levy.
Levy is known for directing and producing broad, hit comedies such as the two "Night at the Museum" movies, which have grossed nearly $1 billion in worldwide boxoffice. But the "Steel" story line takes place in a near future where human boxing has been outlawed, and heavy, humanoid robots slug it out in the ring instead. Into this world step a father and his estranged teenage son, who train an extraordinary fighter.
Levy's participation could mean a change in tone for the adventure project and/or a stretching of the creative muscles for the director, who has signed on with DreamWorks to take a swing at it.
