Other musicals in contention for multiple awards that year were “High Spirits,” based on Noel Coward’s classic comedy “Blithe Spirit,” “Funny Girl,” which transformed Barbra Streisand into a Broadway superstar, and “110 in the Shade,” based on the straight play “The Rainmaker.”
Bert Lahr, best known as the Cowardly Lion in the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz,” won lead actor in a musical for “Foxy,” based on Ben Jonson’s “Volpone.” The musical was not a hit closed after 72 performances. Steve Lawrence, a king among easy-listening crooners who rocketed to fame in the ’50s and ’60s as half of the duo Steve and Eydie, died Thursday at age 88. Lawrence died at home in Los Angeles, and the cause of death was complications from Alzheimer’s disease, according to a spokesperson for the family, Susan DuBow.
Lawrence’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis had finally put an end to his touring career in 2019, after a run in the public eye that spanned six and a half decades.
Lawrence was preceded in death in 2013 by his wife, Eydie Gormé, with whom he enjoyed nearly unparalleled success as a performing couple during their heyday as touring artists and TV stars in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. The couple had continued to tour together through 2009.

Steve Lawrence, the charismatic Grammy- and Emmy-winning crooner who delighted audiences for decades in nightclubs, on concert stages and in film and television appearances, died Thursday. He was 88.
Lawrence, who partnered in a popular act with his wife of 55 years, the late Eydie Gormé, died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, a publicidst announced.
With his boyish good looks, silky voice and breezy personality, Lawrence broke into show business when he won a talent competition on Arthur Godfrey’s CBS show and signed with King Records as a teenager. The singer chose to stay old school and resist the allure of rock ‘n’ roll.

Rod Serling was famous for a lot of things. He was one of the most acclaimed television writers of the mid-20th century, the creator of the genre-defining anthology series "The Twilight Zone," he co-wrote the screenplay to the original "Planet of the Apes," and he even helped give Steven Spielberg his big break. But even though he's famous for a lot of things, he was a prolific writer and even some of his best and most fascinating projects have been largely forgotten by the public over time. Like, for example, an adaptation of one of the most popular Christmas stories ever told, transformed into one of the most politically charged Christmas movies ever filmed.
Serling was no stranger to Christmas stories. After all, he wrote the classic yuletide episode "Night of the Meek," a hopeful story about an alcoholic department store Santa who stumbles across a magical sack that...

Since its debut on CBS on September 11, 1967, there was something distinctively special about "The Carol Burnett Show." This sketch comedy series spanned 279 episodes during its initial run, featuring acclaimed performances and comedic skits that were witty, sharp, and heavy on detail. Every actor who was a part of the show slipped into the shoes of a variety of characters that still remain memorable, including Carol Burnett's Charwoman (her signature role), and her parody of silent-film actress Nora Desmond. Some sketches were parodies of classic films such as "Gone With The Wind" or "Sunset Boulevard," while others mimicked soap opera structures or commercial spoofs.
By 1977, the popularity of the show had spiked, leading to some of the outstanding sketches being re-edited into standalone programs compiled in "Carol Burnett and Friends," which mashed the best skits into half-hour episodes. While the show relied on guest stars such as Jim Nabors and...

Here in L.A., it’s hard to know if someone is listening – let alone active listening. What’s active listening? I learned about it from watching The Bachelorette which my friend, Susie, introduced me to this past weekend.
Active listening is a method of listening that involves eye contact, not interrupting, not imposing opinions or solutions or judgments, just being present, staying focused and asking questions. Essentially, how humans used to interact before technology.
Here’s a situation that everyone can relate to. You’re having a pleasant meal with a friend. Suddenly, they reach for their phone which, naturally, is always within reach. What are they doing? It’s breaking news. Or they’re checking on something in real time. Or they’re ordering something on Amazon while you’re talking. This person is not an active listener. This person is a defective listener with no impulse control.

Songwriter, composer, producer and arranger Burt Bacharach, a dominant force in American popular music for half a century, died of natural causes in Los Angeles on Wednesday. He was 94.
Bacharach’s publicist Tina Brausam revealed the news on Thursday.
As a tunesmith, the nonpareil melodist Bacharach found fame in every medium.
His songs — many of them written with lyricist Hal David — became chart-topping successes, particularly in the hands of vocalist Dionne Warwick. Among ’60s songwriting duos, only Lennon-McCartney rivaled Bacharach-David in terms of commercial and artistic achievement. Bacharach collected six Grammys as a writer, arranger and performer from 1967-2005.
His music was ubiquitous on screens both big and small in the ’60s and ’70s, and he was recognized by the Academy Awards and Golden Globes for his work on “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969) and “Arthur” (1981). He collected a 1971 Emmy for a TV recital of his work.

Jeff Goldblum gave renewed meaning to the oft-used phrase “intimate concert” on Wednesday night during his jazz comedy show at The Sun Rose in West Hollywood.
Before Goldblum was joined on stage by the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, with whom he has released two jazz albums, the “Jurassic World Dominion” star kicked off the show solo by getting to know his audience. But this wasn’t your average pre-concert Q&a or call-and-response game. Goldblum went down a list of attendees’ names and held personal conversations with a good portion of the cozy 100-person room. Many were called at random, but Goldblum did find a few friends in the venue — including “Russian Doll” actor Charlie Barnett and TV host Naz Perez — and chatted about everything from upcoming weddings and microdosing to his recent trip to Italy to walk in Prada’s fashion show.

"But when you save a life, it's worth it." 1091 has released an official trailer for an indie documentary titled The Cat Rescuers about exactly what the title says: people who rescue cats. It premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival last year, but hasn't shown at other fests. It's playing in select theaters and will be available on VOD this fall. A dedicated group of people in Brooklyn devote their days and nights to rescuing abandoned or otherwise homeless kittens and cats. "Combing the borough’s alleys, backyards and housing projects, they trap the cats, get them fixed and returned to their colonies, or adopted." Of course, the cats are adorable, but the people are equally inspiring. The film focuses on the rescuers of New York City, who help save the feral kitties of the Big Apple. Reminds me of that other great cat doc Kedi, about the cats of Istanbul.

This is for Tim. This is so everybody will remember him. I can tell just by the mail I’ve gotten in the last couple of days that he had a huge fan base that loved him, and they wrote me because they knew I was close to him.
Tim grew up in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and his father thought that he was handy around the house. But he wasn’t. He decided to put in a doorbell. But he accidentally wired it in such a way that it rang all the time. It only stopped ringing when someone was at the door. So it would be ringing all day, and when it finally went silent, Tim’s dad would say, “I’ll get it.” Tim told me that story. Anyone who grew up in that house had to be a comedian. That’s the kind of life he had.

It’s projected that over 500,000 cats roam the streets of New York each year, abandoned by their owners causing a nascence for their communities and a real problem for several big-hearted New Yorkers who make it their mission to solve the problem. Following volunteers Sassee, Claire, Stu, and Tara, The Cat Rescuers follows individuals who are often not of great means in their quest to capture, spade, nurture, and often nurse cats back to health for adoption. Some like Stu, a radio technician for the New York Fire Department, have the means to run quasi shelters in their garage. For Stu, the mission is personal, waking up in the middle of the night to rescue cats, heading to work in the morning, and coming back in the evening to take care of the litter.

It's not every 78-year-old who releases a new album for Valentine's Day - or has his friends Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood backing him up. But, where showbiz is concerned, Steve Lawrence isn't just any 78-year-old. "To my knowledge, it's over 50-something, and my first in 10 years, at least," the familiar voice, calculating the number of albums he's released since his first in 1953, tells People from the home in Las Vegas he and his late wife Eydie Gorme shared since 1980. Titled When You Come Back to Me Again, after the Garth Brooks song on the lead track, the new album contains 10 songs and,...

Eydie Gormé—a singing star from the early days of television, and the last years before rock asserted its dominance over the pop music scene—has died at 84. Although she had a few hits on her own, in the public’s mind, “Eydie” was inseparable from “Steve”—Steve Lawrence, her singing partner and husband of 55 years, whom she met when both were regulars performers on Steve Allen’s era of The Tonight Show. Gormé was born Edith Gormezano, the daughter of Sicilian and Turkish immigrants living in the Bronx. Both her parents were Sephardic Jews who spoke both ...

Eydie Gormé, who died on Saturday at 84, was the beneficiary of two mid-century inventions: the television variety show and the Great American Songbook. Both were actually gentrified updates of earlier pop culture. TV variety reworked brash, bumptious vaudeville for the electronic age; the Great American Songbook was the fifties invention of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and other great singers, who set the pop hits and show tunes of the twenties, thirties, and forties to lush, swinging big band arrangements, put on tuxes and ball gowns, and codified a body of durable American song standards — musical holy writ. Gormé met her husband and musical partner, Steve Lawrence, when both were working on The Tonight Show with Steve Allen. They sang together, onstage, on record, and, frequently, in front of television cameras, for nearly half a century. In the sixties and seventies, Steve and Eydie’s act was familiar to millions. Carol for Another Christmas, an updating of Dickens by screenwriter Rod Serling and director Joseph H. Mankiewicz, missing in action for 47 years, makes a welcome and timely return by way of TCM this Christmas. It's a fascinating piece, possibly major Serling, though its placement in Mankiewicz's career is a little trickier. As befits the marriage of Dickens and Serling, it's a preachy allegory that relies on sentiment and humanism rather than urging any specific political course. Mankiewicz was rarely an advocate for anything in his movies, but he orchestrates this affair with typical elegance.

In 1958, Don Kirshner was an unknown 23-year-old kid from the Bronx. Two years later, he was on his way to becoming one of America's most powerful and influential music producers. In five years, through his company Aldon Music, Kirshner launched Carole King, Neil Sedaka and Bobby Darin, among others, to superstardom and ushered in a new era of rock and roll.
"Those five years represented rock and roll's last gasp of innocence," writes Rich Podolsky in his recently published "Don Kirshner: The Man With The Golden Ear." The 1939 classic film "The Wizard of Oz" is celebrating its 70th anniversary with the formation of a foundation that aims to provide audiences the unique opportunity to study the compositions of Harold Arlen, the composer of the film's signature song "Over the Rainbow."
The Harold Arlen Foundation aims to preserve and strengthen the life of the American Pop Standard by educating, inspiring, and enriching the community with his music.
It already delivers its free music outreach program to public junior and high schools in Las Vegas. "Over the Rainbow: The Master Class" is being taught by Sam Arlen and recording artist George Bugatti, who will deliver the jazz music classes to thousands of school children within the Clark County School District this fall.
Supporting the cause are Haf board members Hugh Hefner, Gloria Vanderbilt, John Pizzarelli, Hal David, Robert Osbourne, Steve Lawrence, Eydie Gorme and Tom Gregory.
