Julia Nash felt as though she’d stepped into a Wax Trax! Records museum when she started looking through Dannie Flesher’s belongings. Flesher had cofounded the pioneering industrial label in 1980 with his life partner, Julia’s father Jim; they were responsible for putting out important releases by Ministry, Kmfdm, Front Line Assembly and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, among others. When Jim died of AIDS in 1995, his partner tried to keep the label and the couple’s Chicago record store going. Flesher eventually retired to Arkansas, where he,...

There's very little about Al Jourgensen's legendary band Ministry that hasn't been covered on these pages in some form or another, since I've been a hardcore fan of Uncle Al's output since the late '80s – a period which not only encompasses Ministry's pioneering works of industrial/metal fusion, but side projects like Revolting Cocks and Lard (the latter featuring Dead Kennedys founder and punk icon Jello Biafra), and his collaborations with industrial icons like Skinny Puppy. For those of you still catching up, you can take part in a pretty comprehensive musical journey through the band's catalog via the live album/concert film Adios... Puta Madres (which I covered in depth here), a candid document of the band's "C-u-latour." Several factors at the time led Jourgensen to dissolve Ministry after that run – including the departure of co-founder Paul Barker, the death of legendary bassist Paul Raven, and Al's own declining health.

Few acts conjure images as frighteningly sexy as the Australian act Angelspit. They positively gush, drip and spew Sex and Venom in immeasurable volumes.
Formed in 2004, the riotous duo of Zoog and Destroyx have blown the doors off the dark rock scene with frighteningly garish and beautiful stage costuming along with punishing powerful and seductive beats. The band touts their music as “the beat that will make you sin”. Their music has been featured at all of top Gothic Rock festivals the world over including Wave Gotik Treffen in Germany and the Netherlands Summer of Darkness festival. After the success of their album Krankhaus, Angelspit followed-up with the highly-anticipated Blood Death Ivory, a powerfully horrific look at the darker side of conservative politics, commercialism, and media sexualization.
Recently, I was granted the pleasure to be able to listen to Black Kingdom Red Kingdom - the remix album for Blood Death Ivory.

Seattle’s dark, rain-drenched, and mildew-encrusted club scene continues to provide some of the best music the Pacific Northwest has to offer, and Legion Within has established itself as a key fixture. Formed in 2000 by William Wilson originally as a very romantic dark act, their third release The Empty Men featured a more aggressive industrial tone as the band partnered with Kmfdm’s Sascha Konietzko, Steve White and Jules Hodgson. Their recent and fourth release Mouth Of Madness is currently being offered up exclusively on Kmfdm’s web store. Taking heavily from Sascha’s direction it seems, the band lines up for a genius new release.
The album opens with dazzling industrial dance synth in the track “Someone’s Speaking”. “Mouth of Madness” is a grittier guitar driven track with a poppy horror edge. “Golden Voyage” is a trippy vampy romantic track that grooves and sways with grace. “The Demons...

In the ever ephemeral world of music there are many legends. Some rise to the heavens, flare up, and burn out quickly; leaving behind ash and bone that is quickly swept up by the sagacious whore-like wind we call ‘The Industry.‘ Others create monumental legacies -album after album, side project after side project --for their listeners that resonate through everything they do, causing a crystalline harmony that makes them more and more profound as they hum in our ears. Digital grapevines resonate and pulse with the susurrations of every nuance and movement these legends leave in their wake, lamenting the retirement of Al Jourgensen, laughing at the latest antics from Marilyn Manson, and reminiscing. That same reminiscent spirit makes people line up night after night, all over the world, to bask in the glories -past and present --that these artists radiate. However, it’s a rare event for these legends...
