Last year’s Grammy Award lineup for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance was somewhat weak, with most of the nominees being deep album cuts rather than big singles. Even the ones that were singles were not particularly major hits, at least not to the level that past winners in the category have been. Is this becoming the new normal? This year’s lineup is also looking pretty scarce so far, although there are some contenders whose wins would be significant due to certain other factors.
The frontrunner right now seems to be Taylor Swift and Post Malone’s “Fortnight,” which has made huge waves. The single served as the lead for Swift’s new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” and became an instant hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and breaking the record for the most streamed song in a single day on Spotify. One of 2023’s blockbusters lands on the streamer, with Oscar in hand and more thrills than most Hollywood summer offerings
At a divisive time of much uncertainty and strife, a constant has emerged from the ocean to serve as a great uniter: Godzilla. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, from Warner’s MonsterVerse franchise, is the rare fifth movie to approach a series high; just ask its studio stablemate Furiosa, an acclaimed fifth installment that’s become one of many entertaining 2024 movies to struggle at the box office, how difficult that is. On either side of the Godzilla x Kong triumph sit several more wins for the big G, courtesy of Godzilla Minus One, the most recent entry from the Japanese company Toho. That movie did great business at the box office last December, won an Oscar for visual effects in March, and currently sits atop the Netflix charts in its long-awaited streaming debut,...

Billie Eilish’s third studio album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” was released May 17, yet it seems like everyone is still on a high about it. The singer-songwriter’s new record has been a huge commercial success, and it has also managed to captivate critics too, with many hailing it as the best of the year and Eilish’s brightest work yet. The album’s run has just started, but it is already a possible ticket for Eilish to score her second Album of the Year win at the Grammys.
A second win for Eilish would definitely be impressive, but not shocking. Throughout her short career, she has already taken home nine Grammys, six of those being in the general field. She’s one of the few people to win the awards for Record and Song of the Year twice, and she did so with three different songs, showing that...

Terius Gesteelde-Diamant, a songwriter and producer for Beyoncé and Rihanna, has been sued for rape, sexual battery and sex trafficking by a former mentee.
In a lawsuit filed on Tuesday in California federal court, Chanaaz Mangroe accuses Gesteelde-Diamant (also known as The-Dream) of falsely promising to promote her career only to trap her in an “abusive, violent and manipulative relationship filled with physical assaults, violent sexual encounters, and horrific psychological manipulation.”
Gesteelde-Diamant has been behind a number of hits, including Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” and “Break My Soul,” Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake’s “Holy Grail,” Mariah Carey’s “Touch My Body” and Justin Bieber’s debut single “Baby,” among others. Terius Gesteelde-Diamant — best known for producing and writing hits for the likes of Beyoncé and Rihanna under the name The-Dream — has been sued for rape, sexual battery, and sex trafficking by a former protégée.
Chanaaz Mangroe (who performed as Channii Monroe) filed a lawsuit in the US District Court in Los Angeles today (June 4th). Per Pitchfork, the suit alleges that Gesteelde-Diamant “lured” Mangroe into “an abusive, violent, and manipulative relationship filled with physical assaults, violent sexual encounters, and horrific psychological manipulation” in 2015 — all under the guise of “pursuing a legitimate recording and publishing contract.”
Gesteelde-Diamant (aka Terius Nash) is accused of repeatedly pressuring her into having sex while claiming it was all “part of the process,” strangling her, and filming one of their sexual encounters before threatening to show it to others.

Miley Cyrus apparently knows that beauty is pain — and no pain, no gain. In a recent interview with W Magazine, the pop star revealed that she, remarkably, works out in heels.
“My mantra is, like any athlete, ‘Practice how you perform.’ So that’s why I practice in my heels,” Cyrus said. “The gym looks really tough, but then I’ve got my ivory Gucci slingbacks because they remind me of Marilyn Monroe. I train in heels, mostly.”
Beyond practicing how she performs, the artist explained the decision to forgo traditional training shoes also has to do with bringing a sense of womanhood into the historically masculine setting. “I’m interested in feminizing the workout space, because so much of the workout equipment is ugly,” she told W.
Elsewhere in the interview, Cyrus detailed her personal relationships with Beyoncé and Dolly Parton, confirming the latter prefers fax as her primary mode of communication,...

How do we know what music is actually good? Many fans look to critics. Sure, some might label music journalism as irrelevant in assigning value to art, but the reality is, critics do at least partly contribute to the consensus on the quality of music. That’s why, whether it is during a civilized conversation or the most rabid Twitter stan war, an album’s Metacritic score typically comes up. So award show voters must take those top albums more into consideration than others, right? To be a big awards player, doesn’t your album need to be somewhat acclaimed?
Let’s take a look at the past three Grammy ceremonies as examples. Since these are ceremonies with no nomination review committees involved, the results are a more accurate, unfiltered reflection of what voters think. According to Metacritic, anything below 81 is not “universally acclaimed,” so that’s how I’ll sort it out.

In 1973, Dolly Parton released “Jolene.” The song became a major hit for Parton and found crossover success with a pop audience. When people complimented her on releasing a new type of song, she felt a bit frustrated. She had been trying to release songs like “Jolene” for years.
Dolly Parton had to fight to write songs like ‘Jolene’
In 1967, Parton began working with Porter Wagoner on The Porter Wagoner Show. In their years of collaboration, they released a number of duets together, and they consistently entered the Top 10 on country charts. “Jolene” was a solo effort by Parton, but she said Wagoner helped with the song.
“I have a big part of the arrangements in the main bulk of my songs, say like, I made up the little lick on the guitar, and it’s followed all the way through,” she said in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash, later adding,...

Beyoncé’s lyrics change to Dolly Parton’s classic song Jolene weren’t expected by the song’s composer, one Dolly Parton.
Parton revealed to E! News that she didn’t know Beyoncé was putting her own spin on the song.
“When they said she was gonna do Jolene, I expected it to be my regular one, but it wasn’t. But I love what she did to it. And as a songwriter, you love the fact that people do your songs no matter how they do them.”
“Well, I think it was very bold of her,” Parton said.
Parton provided an introduction for Beyoncé’s version of Jolene on the Cowboy Carter album. “Hey, miss Honey Bey. It’s Dolly P. You know that hussy with the good hair you sang about? Reminded me of someone I knew back when. Except she has flaming locks of auburn hair. Bless her heart.

He built the track around J-Kwon’s 2004 hit “Tipsy,” and within an hour, he had his very own ode to raising a glass — with a country twist. The megahit quickly went viral and topped Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart, surpassing “Texas Hold ’Em” by Beyoncé. (Shaboozey had actually teamed up with her for two songs on her recent country LP, Cowboy Carter.) Together, they became the first two Black artists to lead that chart back-to-back.

On Thursday night’s finale of Summer House, viewers finally saw Lindsay Hubbard and Carl Radke’s highly anticipated breakup talk. While it was obvious all season long that the former friends turned lovers were not in a good place — and news of their split originally broke nearly a year ago in August 2023, obliterating any element of surprise — this final on-camera conversation made it official.
After Radke did the deed, the female cast members gathered in Danielle Olivera’s apartment, with Olivera embracing a sobbing Hubbard and saying, “Girls are here.

Shaboozey’s third album Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going is only days away, set for release on Friday, May 31. In anticipation for the record, the fast-rising hitmaker has unveiled the full 12-song track list which features appearances from Noah Cyrus, Paul Cauthen, and BigXthaPlug.
The album opens with “Horses & Hellcats” as a precursor to “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” the single that Shaboozey is currently riding up the charts with. In April, the song hit Number One on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, dethroning Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em.

The average high temperature in Quebec City in March is 33 degrees Fahrenheit, with a low of around 18. That’s apparently of no consequence to the locals, who have chosen the month for an outdoor music festival appropriately dubbed Igloofest. The annual event, billed as “the coldest music festival in the world,” is an opportunity for Québécois music lovers to flex their winter gear, with revelers in full-body ski suits, snow goggles, and what appears to be the most advanced outdoor apparel on the market.

Beyoncé‘s solo success was once difficult for her former Destiny’s Child bandmate Kelly Rowland to watch. The singer felt she was in Beyoncé’s shadow, which took a toll on their friendship. But years later, Rowland gained enough clarity to share her feelings on the situation through a song.

Rowland has been very open about her insecurities regarding Beyoncé’s post-Destiny’s Child success. Beyoncé thrived after breaking away from the group, having sold over 200 million records worldwide on her own. Even back in their Destiny’s Child days, Rowland felt she was playing second fiddle to the artist. That feeling only intensified after the group’s separation.

When Dolly Parton moved to Nashville, people became enamored not only with her unique voice but with her talent as a songwriter. Parton prides herself on her lyrics and has received well-earned credit for her ability to write. One Nashville music publisher saw a glaring problem with her writing, though.
A Nashville music publisher said Dolly Parton had a weakness as a songwriter
As Parton’s career took off, she received praise for her ability to write. Her songs were complex, emotional, and evocative of her childhood in Tennessee. When she wrote, it was clear that the product was a Dolly Parton song. This, according to record producer Clarence Selman, was a problem.
“Her major weakness as a writer is that she has so stylized her songs by the time she’s written them, that it would lead another artist to believe that they’re only for Dolly Parton,” Selman...

It’s been about a decade since Twenty One Pilots came oozing out of Columbus, Ohio, with their resolutely Midwestern, amicably dystopian 2015 hit “Stressed Out,” an emo-rap-industrial-pop slab of sing-songy melancholy that touched enough of a nerve to catapult the previously unknown duo into Adele/Beyoncé echelons of chart success. Twenty One Pilots’ post-genre sound was well-timed for the full blossoming of the streaming era. Blurryface (the album that contained “Stressed Out”) went from reggae-lite to ukulele twerpiness to pop-punk to piano-pop to Edm. Adding some value amidst all the playlist-brained vertigo,...

The world should value consent. However, Madonna‘s “Erotica” was banned from MTV for depicting consensual roleplay. The Queen of Pop had a surprising reaction to this development. One of the musicians behind Madonna’s album Erotica also had some perceptive things to say about the controversy.
Madonna’s ‘Erotica’ was pulled from MTV for being ‘repellent’
Madonna’s music video for “Erotica” looks like a rediscovered print of a black-and-white silent film about the Folsom Street Fair. It’s grainy, disorientingly edited, and niche in a way that’s generally anathema to a mass-market pop offering. The video has a lot of images that nobody would want to watch with their grandma. The Material Girl had previously explored Bdsm in her music videos for “Express Yourself” and “Justify My Love,” but she took things to a new level of explicitness with “Erotica.” After all, the music video had to...

The Lion King – Featuring the voices of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala and Donald Glover as Simba, Disney’s “The Lion King” is directed by Jon Favreau. © 2019 Disney Enterprises, Inc. When Disney made the original animated version of The Lion King, the studio invested heavily in the film’s music, enlisting Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice for the film’s original songs and Hans Zimmer for its score. Of course, it was an investment that paid off handsomely — the soundtrack album has sold more than 7 million copies, and all four of The Lion King’s Oscar nominations were for the film’s music. When the studio decided to remake the film in 2019, director Jon Favreau was faced with a lot of choices about how he wanted to make his film different than the original. So here are my options: Stick to the plan, with Aron’s mind flittering elsewhere, or cancel other commitments to get dinner and much more time on the record. The second choice, a publicist’s nightmare, makes it more likely that the AMC chief will say something controversial. But Aron has endured a pandemic that shut down his business, withstood roller-coaster share prices and sidestepped nagging speculation that he’s about to get canned. He thrives on risk.

A New Orleans group is suing Beyoncé over her smash hit “Break My Soul” — accusing her of copyright infringement stemming from her use of a sample from Big Freedia, who they claim illegally used lyrics from their 2002 song “Release a Wiggle.”
According to a complaint filed in Louisiana federal court on Wednesday, members of Da Showstoppaz — Tessa Avie, Keva Bourgeois, Henri Braggs, and Brian Clark — alleged that the Cowboy Carter artist specifically sampled Big Freedia’s 2014 track “Explode,” which illegally used “copyrighted lyrics, melody, and musical arrangement” from their 2002 song.

Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list today named its top 10 albums of all-time, with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill crowned No. 1.
“This is my award,” Hill said to Apple Music, “but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love.”
Last year was the album’s 25th anniversary, and its success was overwhelming upon release. It won five Grammys, three American Music Awards, and a Billboard, Soul Train and MTV Video Music Award while selling 30 million copies since its bow.
But instead of capitalizing on it, Hill became one of music’s biggest enigmas. Her output diminished after an MTV Unplugged follow-up acoustic album, reverting to sporadic singles and rare appearances.

Apple Music named its top 10 albums of all time and it focused entirely on popular music. While some older records showed up on the list, the top spot was taken by Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Hill herself reacted to this ranking.
