Roadmap Writers, a screenwriting education and training platform based in Los Angeles, is partnering with Hollywood producer Barry Josephson to identify short stories fit for film and television adaptation.
The competition, open now and running through June 14, seeks commercial-leaning work and carries a cash prize of $7,000. The top three stories will be published on Roadmap Writers.
Short stories have become coveted in the rights market, especially over the past year, and have led to bidding wars among the major studios and streamers. Author Victor Sweetser sold the innovative haunted house film “The Occupant” to New Line this year, and Matt Query got a 7-figure deal at Netflix for his Reddit short story “My Wife and I Bought a Ranch.”
For the Josephson competition, scouters are asking for work no longer than 50 pages and can be of any genre. In addition to the short story, authors are requested to submit a...

London, July 22 (Ians) Scientists have developed game-changing robotics technology that can provide remote medical treatment to casualties in high-risk emergency environments, such as humanitarian disasters.
Using medical telexistence (MediTel) technology, which allows for a highly realistic sensation of existence in remote places without actual travel, a team at the University of Sheffield, UK, successfully created a mobile, robotic-controlled uncrewed ground vehicle (Ugv).
The Ugv boasts of virtual reality (VR) capability and can enable medics and operators to assess critical casualties in hazardous environments, allowing them to perform a remote triage while also ensuring their safety.
The first-of-its-kind, fully integrated medical telexistence solution was developed in just nine months. It features two robotic arms which can effectively remotely operate medical tools to perform a critical initial assessment of a casualty within 20 minutes, including: temperature, blood pressure and heart rate checks; carry out a palpation of the abdomen and administer pain relief...

The family-owned-and-operated candy shop opened its doors in 2001, and up until 2020 was doing quite well for itself. It had a prominent retail spot in The Rocks, a historic and touristy neighborhood in Sydney, Australia, and owner David King and his employees did the vast majority of their work right at the front of the shop, where intrigued passersby could stop and watch the candymaking process. Things were good.
Then Covid hit.

When I was not much older than my oldest son is now, either fourth or fifth grade, the older girl next door who spent several years slowly initiating me to both the secret worlds of rock'n'roll and kissing, thus assuring those things would forever be linked in my mind, played me one of the many 45s she kept in a big giant carry-around box with the Rolling Stone lips on the cover. This one, she assured me, was "mind-blowing." She was right. The first time I heard "Space Oddity," it felt like I lifted off the ground with that countdown, infinity in endless mandala opening above me, as that strange voice, so thin at times, so powerful at others, sang with such longing, such powerful desire to both reach back to a humanity left behind and rocket on into whatever cosmic possibilities lay ahead. I must have played that record...

Witchcraft, nudity, a scene dubbed the "Rape of Christ", Vanessa Redgrave as a masturbating nun... it's hardly surprising that Ken Russell's The Devils fell foul of censors and was slapped with an X certificate on its initial release in 1971.
Film critic Mark Kermode uncovered lost footage in the early '00s and has been championing a full re-release of Russell's original cut ever since.
Various different edits and incarnations exist across DVD, but The Devils has barely seen the light of day in cinemas.
Beyond Fest last night (October 8) presented rare 35mm print of the film in its original X-rated form.
The screening is only the third time The Devils has been shown in cinemas in the Us, and it swiftly sent social media abuzz with film fans calling for Warner Bros to bring it back to the big screen.
This is why @wbpictures should release The Devils:...

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has demanded a meeting of the Rangers board to pay back the £5 million loan he gave to the Glasgow club.
In an appointment that is set to shock The Gers to its core, Ashley has also asked the board members to explain why the club has been delisted from the Aim stock exchange.
The chunky cockney looked to be planning to get out of Toon when he increased his stake in the former Scottish champions to 9%, but he now seems to be having a rethink.
Maybe Rangers, and their easier route into the Champions League which would have provided advertising on the continent for Ashley’s company Sports Direct, isn’t as profitable as he once thought.

Last week, the news that Mike Ashley’s last two representatives on the Rangers board have been put out of power was billed as a crushing blow to Mr Sports Direct’s hopes of taking sole control of the club.
Chief executive Derek Llambias and Barry Leach, the finance director, were removed from their positions after a decisive vote from the Gers’ shareholders.
But where does that leave Mike Ashley and Newcastle United Football Club?
Looking at the bigger picture, Ashley still has considerable influence at Rangers but not in terms of making the decisions. Dave King, who had been embroiled in a battle with Mike over the last few weeks, will now oversee the day-to-day running of the Scottish giants.
It is also good news for the clubs’ respective European ‘ambitions’ (if there are any). Concerns had been raised by the Newcastle United Supporters Trust and...

It’s been a week since “Parks and Recreation” ended. In my review of the series finale, I said that I put off my usual post-season interview with Mike Schur at the time because he was otherwise occupied. (He did, though, offer an answer of sorts as to the question of who is Potus in the year 2048.) Over the last few days, though, we emailed some questions and answers back and forth on leftover bits of business from the finale and the final season, including the show finally identifying Leslie’s party affiliation, which guest stars Schur didn’t manage to squeeze into the final season, Ron and Leslie’s brief estrangement, the religious background(s) of the all-important Lerpiss family, and more. So if you haven’t tired of Schur after the two-part interview we did before the finale, here’s us talking “Parks” one last time (sigh)… Was...

And so "Parks and Recreation" has come to an end. We published many stories about the show over the last week, including an Amy Poehler interview, an essay on the show's greatness, and a whole lot more, and I have a review of the series finale coming up just as soon as you give me a pair of your gym socks... "Yes. I'm ready." -Leslie Knope A few years ago, Mike Schur and I had a very long discussion of finales — not only the many times he had written "Parks" episodes that could function as series finales if NBC canceled them, but of the many sitcom and drama finales he had admired over the years. He talked about how once upon a time, he was convinced that the show would end with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the park Leslie built on Lot 48. He talked, as he so often does,...

The last panel of NBC's press tour day (and my last panel of this particular tour, though Fienberg will be here for Fox, FX and PBS) should be a good one: a farewell press conference for "Parks and Recreation," featuring Amy Poehler, Chris Pratt, Adam Scott, Aziz Ansari, Retta and Jim O'Heir, plus co-creator Mike Schur. (It's a shame Nick Offerman and Aubrey Plaza won't be here, but it feels like a miracle that Pratt has time, given how many different movies he's starring in these days.) I'll be live-blogging the whole thing, as often as my fingers and the ballroom wi-fi will allow, so hit reload early and often. (All times Pacific.) 5:30 p.m.: Bob Greenblatt introduces the panel, calls it "one of the best shows that have ever been on television." It's easy to be magnanimous when the show's on the way out the door, I suppose.

You have to be a bit courageous to name a documentary “Boredom,” knowing it will eventually land in the hands of a snarky reviewer looking for an easy joke. Albert Nerenberg, the director behind other documentaries looking at everyday phenomena (“Laughology,” “Stupidity”) wanted to explore this common life experience: what boredom is, how it happens, and what effects it has on people.
In doing so, Nerenberg uses a variety of filmmaking styles, from research presented by experts, to B-roll and stock footage, to dramatizations and “Daily Show” style interviews meant as much to amuse as entertain.
Nerenberg warns us early on that there isn’t much research on the actual topic of boredom. It’s apparently a subject that sparks more curiosity and questions than it does answers. The documentary does pull together a variety of experts, however, from psychologists and neurologists to scholars on topics like education and technology.

According to Scotland’s Daily Record Mike Ashley is making a major power play for Rangers at the moment, and his latest bid to oust current Chief Executive Graham Wallace and Director Philip Nash have more to do with his own desires to further line his pockets, rather than any real concern over their leadership of the club.
Just as he did when he “rescued” Newcastle from the financially disastrous control of the Halls and Shepherds (themselves hardly innocent parties when it came to using and abusing the club for personal gain), Ashley swept into Rangers with the promise of an emergency loan, as long as the club surrendered ownership of their iconic badge a month or so ago. That attempt was blocked by Wallace and Nash inevitably, who clearly saw Ashley’s plan to be able to license the crest as a recipe for over-saturation...

"Parks and Recreation" just concluded its sixth season in memorable fashion (here's my review), with the Pawnee/Eagleton unity concert, a trip to San Francisco, big cameos and then a very crazy idea at the very end of the finale which could give us a very different show in season 7. As usual when "Parks" wraps up a season, I emailed co-creator Mike Schur some questions about what went down, and why. It goes without saying that big big spoilers are coming, immediately. When, how and why did you come up with the idea for this three-year time jump? Mike Schur: We were breaking the final batch of episodes and had begun discussing the finale story. Some of it was sort of pre-destined, because we had the Unity Concert, which was going to put the merger storyline to rest, by showing that the town en masse would speak louder than the naysayers.

Warning: Don't keep reading if you want to remain spoiler-free on the figure skating results from Tuesday (Feb. 11). They will be part of NBC's primetime coverage this evening starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt (hosted by Matt Lauer, as Bob Costas has been sidelined with an eye infection).
With the team figure skating competition complete at the 2014 Winter Olympics, the skaters are looking to their individual competitions. Kicking things off Tuesday was the pairs short program -- short and long programs are combined to determine the medal standings.
The Russians dominated the pairs short program, earning the first and third spots with a German pair in between. The U.S. pair of Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir (above) finished in 9th place, but they scored a 67.44, which was more than three points higher than the same program scored in the team competition. Warning: Don't keep reading if you would like to remain spoiler-free for the team figure skating opening competition, the men's short program. It will be featured in primetime Thursday (Feb. 6) on NBC.
The men launched figure skating at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Thursday with the short programs that will count toward the new team figure skating event. The scoring is done the same way as in the individual competition, but then for the team score, each man is ranked 1-10, with first place earning 10 points, second earning nine points and so forth.
U.S. skater Jeremy Abbott (above, left) wasn't the favorite to finish first, but he was expected to do fairly well. That's not what happened. He earned the lowest score he's received in competition in years after a fall and then turning a couple triple jumps into a double and a single.

The Warner Archive has released the 1979 film The Great Santini on DVD. In many ways, the film helped break Hollywood’s long-standing glorification of war -- to a point. But it would seem old habits die hard, and when they do, we’re left with an uneven picture that goes to verge of making a powerful statement on war before backing off to familiar and safe settings.
Right off the bat, we’re introduced to a Marine dogfighter, Lt. Col. “Bull” Meechem (Robert Duvall in an Oscar-nominated performance), as he simulates air-to-air combat with his fellow pilots. Here is clearly a man in his element, trash-talking and verbally harassing his fellow pilots as he makes quick work of them.

Crass, the band that made living in an British farm house hardcore, is the newest subject of MOCAtv's art-meets-music series, "The Art of Punk."
"Crass were the missing link between counterculture hippies and punk's angry rhetoric," John Robb writes in the Guardian.
The second episode of the project is devoted to Dial House residents and friends like drummer Penny Rimbaud and visual artist Gee Vaucher -- 1980s protest icons who cultivated their own strand of Diy punk aesthetics.
In the video, Rimbaud and Vaucher, along with tattoo artist Scott Campbell and graphic designer Dave King, recount the early days of Crass, formed in a post-war England on the heels of '60s flower power activism. Angered by the encroaching era of conservatism, Rimbaud and his bandmates gathered together officially in 1977, advocating for anarchism, environmentalism, animal rights and more.

Community, Season 4, Episode 8: “Herstory of Dance”
Written by Jack Kukoda
Directed by Tristram Shapeero
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
“Herstory of Dance” is a surprisingly sweet episode of Community. What initially seems like a rather lazy Abed plot, another example of him attempting to enact fictional tropes in the real world, is granted another, deeper level when Brie Larson’s Rebecca assists him in his hijinks. In that moment, it transcends the emptiness of Abed’s arc this season and becomes truly affecting. It also nicely incorporates itself into the A-plot as Abed interrupts Sophie B. Hawkins to declare his love to Rebecca. A moment particularly moving because, while Abed is again exploiting a trope, he’s doing it out of genuine human emotion rather than a calculated attempt to remove himself from the world, to neatly pack the chaos of reality into three-act boxes.

30 Rock, Season 7, Episode 10, “Florida”
Written by Tom Ceraulo & Matt Hubbard
Directed by Claire Cowperthwaite
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
“Florida” proves a nice bounce back from “Game Over,” whose title, it now seems, overstated things. Over the last year or so, 30 Rock has proven to be better at doing focused, character-driven episodes rather than sprawling omnibus episodes that attempt to incorporate every character, and that is the case here. Jack talks Liz into accompanying him to the titular state in order to tie up the remaining affairs with his mother’s estate and Tracy and Jenna realize they are in charge of things, which goes about as well as you would expect it to.
The A-plot serves to deepen Jack’s understanding of his mother while addressing any sexual tension that may have built up between he and Liz over the past seven years. The B-plot tracks Hazel...

Britain's Prince Harry has been offered £100,000 to star in a raunchy Las Vegas show. The flame-haired royal caused controversy when nude pictures of him playing strip billiards with a bevy of beauties in the Us city appeared online in August, and theatre producer David King is keen for the 28-year-old prince to return to the city and go on stage to introduce his production 'Shades of Temptation'. David has written a 'serious' letter to Buckingham Palace inviting Harry to appear in his show - which features a seductive striptease and scantily-clad dancers - and he promises to give the prince £100,000 to spend on the charity of his choice. He told The Sun newspaper: 'Prince Harry...

David King claims a musical version of Danny Boyle's spectacular ceremony could be an 'international winner'
A British theatre producer wants to recreate a version of the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony in Beijing, according to the Telegraph.
David King, of Spirit Productions, claims there is significant interest in the notion of a stage musical based on Danny Boyle's Stratford spectacular, having reportedly received a phone call from Chinese business contacts within hours of Friday's ceremony. It was suggested that he produce a show before the end of the year.
The 56-year-old producer said that the Chinese audience were fond of the initial bucolic scenes, which included maypole dancing, farmyard animals and a cricket match.
King told the Telegraph: "I was astonished when one of my contacts rang in the middle of the night asking if we could stage a show based on the Olympics opening ceremony.

Community, Season 3, Episode 16: “Virtual Systems Analysis”
Written by Matt Murray
Directed by Tristram Shapeero

Community seems to flourish when it brings Abed’s autistic tendencies to the forefront. They played a crucial factor in the recent “Pillows and Blankets” two-parter, but it’s episodes like “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas,” “Critical Film Studies” and “Intermediate Chaos Theory” that “Virtual Systems Analysis” calls to mind, wherein Abed’s antisocial tics inform not just the plot but the actual structure of the episodes. Whether the resulting episode is deeply introspective (as in “Film Studies” and “Systems Analysis”), appropriately cutesy (“Christmas”) or merely wildly entertaining (“Chaos Theory”), it’s hard to argue that these aren’t singular episodes, Not just for Community, but for any recent TV show.

2012 Writers Guild Award Nominations
The 2012 Writers Guild Award nominations were announced yesterday and as with the Emmys cable led the drama categories. Previous nominees Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad and new series Homeland all racked up 3 nominations in the drama field. The Good Wife is the only network drama featuring in the Drama Series category, with Dexter getting the other slot and sadly Friday Night Lights missed out.
If you're wondering where Mad Men is; the field of eligibility for these awards runs from December, 1 2010 until November 30, 2011. This makes the Writers Guild Awards similar to the Golden Globes rather than the Emmys regarding the submission time frame. The last new episode of Mad Men aired in October 2010 so it can't be included; yes it has been more than a year since there was new episode of Mad Men.
Network fared much better in the comedy front with Emmy success Modern Family...

Many books have been written about the serial-killing spree of Marcel Petiot, a French doctor convicted in 1946 of killing 26 people, but whose actual body count could be in the hundreds. The main advantage David King has over his predecessors in Death In The City Of Light: The Serial Killer Of Nazi-Occupied Paris is access to the unsealed, previously classified police dossier on the case. With a wealth of information from the time period, this is a rare non-fiction book that doesn’t feel endlessly padded out to hit a page count: King wastes little time reconstructing the investigation ...

In the course of writing lists or features, it's frequently occurred to myself and other writers to upload a clip from a movie to YouTube, by way of illustrating a point - and embedding it in the article. How often this goes through smoothly and how often it doesn't has become quite interesting in the last few years.
After uploading a short clip from The Exorcist to illustrate an entry in Top 10 most frightening sounds in movies, I was met with the familiar legend Video blocked in some countries text, next to the video in question...
The 'View Copyright Info' link indicated that the uploaded video had been content-matched using YouTube's Content ID tool, and was blocked either worldwide or in enough countries as to make the inclusion of the video-embed undesirable.
[ Interestingly there appears to actually be no 'blocked' icon at YouTube in such cases. Instead there is the 'world' icon sitting next to the word 'Public' - even when the 'some countries' that the video is blocked in transpire to be 'every country on Earth'. Maybe you can watch such a video off-world..? ]
Unusually, I didn't bother to delete the now-useless (except for my own personal viewing) video, and chanced to...
