The long shadow of the war and its ravages continue to haunt a group of late middle-aged Sarajevan friends in the low-budget, tonally uneven dramedy “May Labor Day” from Bosnian multi-hyphenate Pjer Žalica. Although the material is both a little thin and a tad familiar, the script ticks off a range of contemporary social problems and issues such as the brain drain to Europe of the educated younger generation, junkie no-hopers who get clean through faith, the orphan kids kept off the street through charitable ventures and the nagging dissatisfaction felt by the ordinary men who fought for their country, but feel that it has lost its way.
Serving as the closing night attraction of this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival, “May Labor Day” is a co-production of all the territories of former Yugoslavia and features an ensemble of the region’s best-known actors, who appear to take great pleasure in performing together.

In Sally Potter’s sad drama, Javier Bardem gives a fervent performance as an author plagued by the past after he suffers a stroke
Sally Potter’s The Roads Not Taken is a sad, painful, self-conscious vignette of a film with forthright performances; it’s a chamber piece in many ways, but with bold flashback excursions that come close to causing its emotional engine to overheat.
Javier Bardem plays Leo, a writer in New York who has suffered a stroke and now lives, by choice, in a grim single room, attended by a carer, Xenia (Branka Katic). The only person who still appears to love him is his daughter, Molly (Elle Fanning), who one chaotic day has to take him to the dentist and optician, while dealing (via her cellphone) with a stressful work situation.

Despite a handful of films postponing their release dates as a precautionary measure in the wake of the coronavirus, the specialty box office is persevering and hoping that arthouse audience will come through. Last week, A24’s First Cow delivered a career-high opening for Kelly Reichardt — but that was before the coronavirus turned into a pandemic. With events being canceled, the rise of concern and social-distancing becoming a common practice, we’ll have to see how this will impact the limited release titles, which is a very different creature than wide-release titles.
Leading the pack this week is the Focus Features title Never Rarely Sometimes Always directed by Eliza Hittman and starring Sidney Flanigan, Talia Ryder, Théodore Pellerin, Ryan Eggold and Sharon Van Etten. The story follows two teenage girls in rural Pennsylvania. Faced with an unplanned pregnancy and a lack of support, Autumn (Flanigan) and her cousin Skylar (Ryder...

Writer-director Sally Potter opens her tender new drama, “The Roads Not Taken,” in a rather unusual way — with strictly audio on a blank screen. During this time, we hear car horns and other street traffic. As we get comfortable with that familiar chaos, the director brings us to a man lying serenely in bed as the noise from outside filters through his open window.
It is precisely this clash of sounds and spaces that Potter to which continually points us throughout the movie. Javier Bardem plays Leo, a man suffering from an unknown (and virtually unspoken of) mental illness. He constantly floats in and out of his bustling New York City reality to rural Mexico where he grieves the loss of a child with his partner, Dolores (Salma Hayek). He also drifts over to a vague Greek island where he struggles to find inspiration as a writer. It’s these luscious,...

"You keep reminding me of someone that I once knew..." Bleecker Street has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled The Roads Not Taken, which is premiering at the Berlin Film Festival playing in the competition selection later this month. This is the latest film from English filmmaker Sally Potter, who brought her last flick The Party to Berlinale as well. Potter's new film follows a day in the life of Leo, played by Javier Bardem, and his daughter, Molly, played by Elle Fanning, as he floats through alternate lives he could have lived. This drifting leads Molly to wrestle with her own path as she considers her future. This also stars Salma Hayek, Branka Katic, Dimitri Andreas, Milena Tscharntke, and Laura Linney. It seems like a compelling concept for a film, playing with our longing for the life we didn't live. Could be good. Here's the first...

Three years after debuting her eighth feature film at the Berlin Film Festival (the star-studded and bruising black comedy “The Party”), British auteur Sally Potter is gearing up for another big festival debut. This time around, Potter is moving her action and attention to New York City in the form of “The Roads Not Taken,” a new drama starring Javier Bardem and Elle Fanning as a father-daughter duo embarking on an emotional visit over the course of one day in the city. The film will premiere in competition at Berlin, where it will go up against new films from Eliza Hittman, Kelly Reichardt, Abel Ferrara, Christian Petzold, and Hong Sangsoo.
Per the film’s official synopsis, it “follows a day in the life of Leo (Javier Bardem) and his daughter, Molly (Elle Fanning) as she grapples with the challenges of her father’s chaotic mind. As they weave their way through New York City,...

Screen spoke to festival industry chief Jovan Marjanovic about the necessity of introducing a TV forum at this year’s event.

CineLink Drama 2016 will see producers, talent and broadcasters from the region and further afield taking part in sessions, lectures and case studies that focus on the current state of high-end TV programmes, and what can be done to integrate the area’s film and TV industries.
Six series in development will also be presented [scroll down to the see the list], with top talent attached including Danis Tanović (Death In Sarajevo) and Ognjen Sviličić (Nightlife). True Blood: Monday (December 2) at 10pm on Fox
The penultimate season of True Blood wraps up with a finale that contains pretty much everything we love about the show - nudity, a load of violence and plenty of scenes that are a taaaad messed up.
But don't go thinking that 'Radioactive' is True Blood-by-numbers, oh no - there's added shock value in the apparent death of one of the show's lead characters, as Sookie (Anna Paquin) finds herself in danger after trying to talk Warlow (Rob Kazinsky) out of marriage and Bon Temps braces itself for a new crisis.

Title: The Big Picture Director: Eric Lartigau Starring: Romain Duris, Marina Fois, Catherine Deneuve, Neils Arestrup, Branka Katic, Eric Ruf A contemplative, puzzle-box anti-thriller of the sort that seemingly only the French now make (even though it’s adapted from an American novel by Douglas Kennedy), “The Big Picture” is an artful if overlong drama that connects chiefly as a compelling vehicle for star Romain Duris. To call it understated is its own special sort of understatement; this is a film-as-character-study, but also one that hovers drone-like over its subject rather than digging in for deep psychological insights. The story centers on a lawyer and family man, Paul Exben (Duris), who commutes from [ Read More ]

The Big Picture
(L’homme qui voulait vivre sa vie)
Direced by Eric Lartigau
At what point does a routine mid-life crisis turn into a full-scale Ripleyesque reinvention? Eric Lartigau’s The Big Picture explores the drastic measures taken by Parisian lawyer Paul Exben (Romain Duris), following his discovery of his wife’s infidelity. If, like me, you’re a fan of Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels, you’ll enjoy watching Duris take on another man’s identity, with the help of some additional facial hair and a seemingly endless supply of cash. But don’t go expecting action, suspense, or a regular supply of corpses: this is more of a character study than a thriller.
Novelists often treat film adaptations of their work with barely disguised contempt. But author Douglas Kennedy has been fulsome in his praise for this movie, which shifts the action of his 1997 novel from the USA to Europe.

I have no reason in particular to write about "Big Love" today, besides the fact that when an episode of television is as brilliant as Sunday's (Feb. 14) hour was, it simply must be discussed.
I don't even know where to begin. With that devastatingly sad ending, I suppose. Though you could see it coming from a mile away, it was no less heartbreaking.
Actually, the fact that it wasn't a shocking surprise is a compliment to the brilliant work of Benjamin Koldyke -- who played the tortured Dale Tomasson -- because the pain of his character was so palpable, you just knew it wasn't going to end well.
I mean, this dude is such a good actor that it wasn't until I went to look up his name that I realized he's the same guy who is playing Robin's current love interest on "How I Met Your Mother" and I'd...

Chicago – Was John Dillinger an Adolf Hitler-level criminal mastermind or a modern-day Robin Hood superman? In the authentic reality portrayed by the god-like Johnny Depp in the Chicago-filmed “Public Enemies,” he’s a little bit of both for blockbuster filmmaker Michael Mann.
Unfortunately, Depp’s nemesis – special agent Melvin Purvis as played by “The Dark Knight” mainstay Christian Bale – falls flat. Bale rolls through the motions with a monotone and monotonous role that needed the tension of a World War conflict rather than a rubber band.
Rating: 4.0/5.0 The French actress Marion Cotillard, on the other hand, delivers yet another intoxicating performance as Billie Frechette this time in a supporting role. We’re reminded why she ever-so-definitely deserved her 2008 Oscar for so absolutely embodying Edith Piaf in 2007’s “La Vie en Rose”.
Leelee Sobieski is thrown in toward the end as the downplayed character Polly Hamilton in a relatively wasted and unnecessary cameo.

Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard looked glamorous at the Public Enemies premiere in London earlier today. Over the weekend he was turning heads in NYC but now he's back to promoting his new film. Johnny recently spoke about why the movie is relevant in our current economy and also discussed staying true to himself. Here's more: On his character robbing banks: "Back then the banks were the enemies. We're learning today that they've been the enemies yet again. So when it comes to Dillinger, isn't it somehow nice to see the underdog kind of take control, even if it was another time?" On what's important to him: "My kiddies are getting bigger. My daughter's 10 and my boy's 7. The greatest thing is just the sort of beauty of watching my kids grow up and become little adults." On his advice about growing up: "Remember that you make your own reality. You...

I have a couple of quick updates for Channing Tatum's upcoming historical drama 'Public Enemies', which has already gotten a ton of Oscar buzz and seems to be on everyone's must-see list for this year.

As far as the film's soundtrack is concerned, Decca Records has now announced that they will be releasing the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for 'Public Enemies' on June 30, 2009 with music composed by Elliot Goldenthal. As I mentioned in my previous post, Channing Tatum's historical drama, 'Public Enemies,' had another test screening on Thursday night. The screening was held at the Sherman Oaks Arclight in the Los Angeles, California area, and director Michael Mann was in attendance again (along with a reported packed house of around 400 - 600 extremely lucky screeners).
Reviewers are raving about the "superb" acting and casting and "top notch" cinematography, art direction, costumes, and score that transported them back to the 1930's. Below you will find snippets from one of the reviews I found on Ain't It Cool News. Enjoy!!!
"...They had one of those special screenings last night where they don't tell you what the title of the movie is at the Sherman Oaks Arclight. When I first read the synopsis on my pass about a John Dillinger gangster flick I instantly knew what it was and thanked...

HBO has announced that it has committed to a fourth season of its polygamy-themed drama Big Love, which stars Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloë Sevigny, Amanda Seyfried and Ginnifer Goodwin. According to the trades, the series drew 1.5 million viewers in its initial run Sunday at 9 p.m., growing its audience 29% over January 18's season-three premiere despite competition from the Super Bowl on NBC. The show is averaging nearly 5 million viewers per episode when DVR viewing, encore runs and video-on-demand deliveries are factored in -- a performance on par with that of HBO's freshman hit True Blood. Paxton stars as a polygamous Utah businessman and Tripplehorn, Sevigny and Goodwin as his wives. Branka Katic stars as Eastern European waitress Ana, who's being courted in season three to join the family as the fourth wife. Season-four production is set to start later this year with episodes slated to run in 2010.

Chicago – How does Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) do it on HBO’s “Big Love”? He has three beautiful wives, a sea of children, parents at war with each other, politics with a polygamist prophet and big business to control. And that’s just the beginning.
Television Rating: 4.5/5.0 While several plots continue from season two and some are completely new in the third season, the plotlines that resurface make for especially compelling TV.
Guess who’s back? Ana (Branka Katic) – the love interest of Bill and Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) from season two – is all of a sudden dating the Henricksons and now Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn) is the one encouraging it. Barb’s feeling change when she realizes what a new wife will mean for growing her family and how to do things on her terms.
