In today’s film news roundup, “Just Mercy” is the closer for the Austin Film Festival, Tyler Christensen’s “Vulture” gets an award and Simon Helberg is cast opposite Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard in “Annette.”
Film Festivals
The Austin Film Festival will close with legal drama “Just Mercy,” starring Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson, on Oct. 31 at the Paramount Theatre.
Andrew Lanham, who co-wrote the script with director Destin Daniel Cretton, and cast member Tim Blake Nelson will participate in a Q&a.
“Just Mercy” is based on the case of Walter McMillian, an African American death-row prisoner who was exonerated in 1993 after being convicted five years earlier for a 1986 murder in Alabama. Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, took on McMillian’s cause in 1988 in his first case as an attorney.
Jordan stars as Stevenson while Foxx portrays McMillian in the Warner Bros. film.

Here’s a reason for some of us to feel old. Could it really be 30 years ago since The Big Chill, the saga of yuppies reconnecting, pouring out angst and bed hopping to Motown songs? The Toronto Film Festival will bring back the cast and crew of a film that debuted at the festival in 1983. It will happen September 5. Wonder if the returning stars will include Kevin Costner, who played the friend who committed suicide, and who was famously cut out of the movie by director Lawrence Kasdan (who made it up to Costner in Silverado, The Bodyguard and Wyatt Earp). Here’s the official word: Toronto — The guests of honour at this party, unlike the one thrown in the film, will definitely be in attendance. Thirty years after its world premiere at the 1983 Toronto International Film Festival®, The Big Chill—and members of its cast and crew—is back.

Thirty years after its world premiere at the 1983 Toronto International Film Festival, "The Big Chill" is back. On the opening night of Tiff's 38th edition, the festival is hosting a special anniversary screening of Lawrence Kasdan's classic film. Much like the reunion that conspired in the film, the screening is bringing together members of the cast and crew for an extended Q&A, though we can't say whether they'll be left dancing to The Temptations this time. Moderated by Variety's film critic Scott Foundas, the Q&A will feature actors Glenn Close, Tom Berenger, Meg Tilly, Mary Kay Place and JoBeth Williams; director/writer Lawrence Kasdan; screenwriter Barbara Benedek; executive producer Marcia Nasatir; and producers Meg Kasdan and Michael Shamberg. Following its opening night screening thirty years ago, "The Big Chill" won the coveted People's Choice Award and went on to be nominated for three Academy Awards: best film,...

This is one party where the guests of honour will definitely be in attendance -- unlike the party invitees in "The Big Chill."
Thirty years after its world premiere at the 1983 Toronto Film Festival, "The Big Chill" is returning to the city where it first screened, and members of its cast and crew will be coming along with it.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of "The Big Chill," Tiff is hosting a reunion of its own for the cast and crew. Chicago – “Darling Companion” may be the first film consisting entirely of footage resembling the background action in an erectile dysfunction commercial. It has the score of a Campbell’s ad, the premise of a Hallmark card and the script of a self-parodying Lifetime dud. Side effects may include headaches, irritability and a guaranteed loss of interest.
What possessed Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline, Richard Jenkins, Dianne Wiest and Sam Shepard to sign on to this dreck? Perhaps it was the once illustrious reputation of writer/director Lawrence Kasdan, who was last seated behind the camera for 2003’s unfortunate “Dreamcatcher,” and perhaps never should have returned. Like “Larry Crowne,” Kasdan’s patronizing would-be crowd-pleaser is populated by people who are far more intelligent than the script that has entrapped them. The very notion that they assumed anyone would’ve been entertained by this simple-minded drivel is insulting.

Last week saw the release of “Darling Companion,” the first film from writer/director Lawrence Kasdan in nine years. The film tells the story of Beth (Diane Keaton) and her husband Joseph’s (Kevin Kline) dog getting lost in the mountains after their daughter’s wedding. The couple, their family, and friends spend the next week searching for the dog, a quest that puts all their relationships into question. We had a chance to talk to the director during the San Francisco International Film Festival where the film was playing.
For the first time since his 1991 film “Grand Canyon,” Kasdan shares a writing credit on a film with his wife Meg Kasdan. Together they shared an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay as a result of their efforts last time around. While it’s no coincidence that they have once again teamed up to tell a story together, the...

Chicago – “If you want a friend in Washington,” Harry S. Truman once said, “get a dog.” The same can be said for the film industry, as they keep producing canine quandaries. Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline, Sam Shepard and Elisabeth Moss cozy up to their own ‘Darling Companion.’

This is about folks of a certain age who are contemplating some of their own mortality, and what prompts such action is a person’s best friend, a mutt named Freeway. The film is unusually paced, almost leisurely so, and the cast is all-around excellent, no doubt dog lovers all. Diane Keaton still has the power to shoulder a film, and old pros Dianne Wiest, Richard Jenkins and Kevin Kline also get to sink their teeth into a film that’s about losing that dog, but never allowing it to sink into cloying sentiment. [1] On paper, Lawrence Kasdan's Darling Companion sounds promising. Kasdan, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and filmmaker, directed the drama from a script he co-wrote with his wife Meg Kasdan, also an Oscar nominee. The star-studded cast, as the trailer is happy to remind you, includes two Academy Award nominees (Richard Jenkins and Sam Shepard) and three Academy Award winners (Diane Keaton, Dianne Wiest, and Kevin Kline), as well as promising younger actors like Elisabeth Moss and Mark Duplass. But at the end of the day, no number of collective accolades can guarantee an interesting picture, and unfortunately, the trailer for Darling Companion looks pretty cringeworthy. The Kasdans' screenplay revolves around a dissatisfied older woman named Beth (Keaton) who adopts an abandoned dog she finds on the side of the road and finds contentment in her bond with him. But when Beth's self-absorbed husband (Kline) loses the dog, the couple pull...

Though he's been announced as attached to a few projects over the past couple years, Lawrence Kasdan hasn't written or directed a produced film since Dreamcatcher in 2003. But now Kasdan will direct Darling Companion from a script he wrote with Meg Kasdan, and he's just added Mark Duplass, Dianne Wiest and Sam Shepard to the cast. THR notes that Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline, Richard Jenkins and Elizabeth Moss were already cast in the film. Lawrence Kasdan, back from the creative wilderness (Dreamcatcher anyone?), has started to assemble his cast for the upcoming drama-comedy Darling Companion, which he co-wrote with wife Meg Kasdan.
According to Variety, Kevin Kline, Richard Jenkins, Diane Keaton, and Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss will star in the tale of a woman (Keaton) who loves her dog more than her husband. Hilarity ensues (presumably) when her spouse (Kline) loses the dog while they are staying at their vacation home in the Rockies, causing the two of them to hunt for a missing animal.
Nice to see Kasdan back (he co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi trivia fans!) and with a talented cast onboard with him.
