Without a doubt, David Crane and Marta Kauffman made the right call back in 1994: they booked the name Friends and created the most iconic sitcom about a friend group ever. The overwhelming popularity of their series that launched quite a few careers led to numerous other shows feasting on the same general concept: following a group of friends in their twenties through their successes and downfalls.
But admittedly, only one other sitcom got it right, adding its own twist to the Friends formula and creating a story just as compelling — and almost as long.
Finding True Love Is No Easy Task
New York hosts millions of people, and all those people are busy with their jobs, hobbies, and established social circles. In such a dense yet detached environment, finding the one and only seems nearly impossible… But those who succeed, can tell the most interesting and convoluted stories about their previous failed attempts.

Bringing a couple whose chemistry clicks on the screen is not an easy task. A proper storyline, well-developed characters, an ideal location, and perfect timing are all necessary. Rachel and Joey’s relationship on Friends lacked all of these. Well, the NBC series always had wonderful backstories, and the couples we saw on the show—Ross and Rachel, Monica and Chandler, Phoebe and Mike, for example—all made sense. Still, it was impossible to swallow the pill of Rachel and Joey being together.
Throughout its ten seasons, Friends had a lot of romantic moments. But in terms of other couples, the back-and-forth dynamic between Joey and Rachel won out in terms of the ‘will-they or won’t-they relationship’. Having said that, while there were many memorable moments in Friends Season 5, one that sticks out as especially epic is the game of ‘this or that’.

Unveiling the Iconic Moments from Friends Finale Twenty years ago, 52.5 million Americans were glued to their screens, witnessing the final chapter of Friends. The creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane disclosed how a portion of the script had unfortunately leaked before its premiere on May 6, 2004. Oh my god, we tried so hard to keep it a secret, said Kauffman on Today, revealing it was an inside job. The scripts that were circulated prior to the premier had unique numbers for tracking, explained Crane. While frustrating, the leak turned the backstage into a detective scene. Despite the revelation

Twenty years ago, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) got off the plane. “Friends” concluded its 10-season run on Thursday, May 6, 2004, with “The Last One,” its two-part series finale that drew 52.5 million viewers and remains the fifth most-watched series finale in U.S. history.
A lot has happened in the 20 years since the Emmy-winning sitcom went off the air. “Joey” came and went. “Friends” remains in syndication — and its enduring popularity means it’ll outlive all of us — but it has found a new generation of fans on streaming, first on Netflix and now on Max, to where the series moved when the streamer launched in 2020.
In 2021, the six stars — Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer — reunited for the Emmy-nominated Max special “Friends: The Reunion.” Five months after the special aired, James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther, died at 59 from prostate cancer. Not many shows avoided controversy and appeased mass audiences quite like Friends. Thirty years after its premiere, however, our perception of the series has evolved.
Some say that the show used jokes that capitalized on the intolerant views of the 1990s without any regard for actual wit or intelligence. Others claim that the NBC megahit emulated other better programs, such as Living Single, profiting off of superior greatness without ever crediting its inspiration. No matter what anyone thinks of this David Crane and Marta Kauffman-created series, Friends remains the most culturally relevant sitcom of its era.
Its themes and comfy aesthetics continue to engulf young and old viewers alike in a cozy realm of immature banter and authentic bonding, both platonic and romantic. The show gets millions of views monthly in cable syndication and streaming, making it a beloved fixture of the television zeitgeist a quarter into the 21st century.

Have you ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes of your favorite television show? Olivia Williams, a guest star on the hit NBC sitcom Friends, recently opened up about her “harrowing” time on set.
Even though Friends’ last episode aired in 2004, the sitcom is still a popular choice for comfort and comedy in today’s world. Getting cast as a guest star, thus, must have been a huge thrill back in the nineties. It meant getting closer to the main stars and also becoming more widely recognized. Some actors, though, have been candid about their less-than-refined experiences.

The Frasier reboot’s first season was successful enough for Paramount+ to invest in a second season. Now that season 2 has been secured, Kelsey Grammer is opening up about what he’d like to see happen. He’s also sharing the characters he’d like to see turn up in the reboot. While Daphne Moon, portrayed by Jane Leeves in Frasier, and Dr. Niles Crane, portrayed by David Hyde Pierce, have opted not to return, Grammer isn’t counting out adding more members of their family to the reboot. He recently revealed the Moon family member he’d love to see in season 2.

While Jane Leeves has shown absolutely no interest in returning to the Frasier reboot, her side of the family is being represented by her son David Crane, who is actively involved in the series. David, the son of Daphne...

Norman Lear, who recently passed away at the age of 101, transformed the network television sitcom in the 1970s by confronting America's cultural contentiousness head-on and daring viewers to laugh at a bigot like Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" or the white-folks-hating George Jefferson on "The Jeffersons." People were more than ready to accept this challenge. "All in the Family" was the top-rated show on television for six of its nine seasons, while "The Jeffersons" ranked in the top 10 for four of its remarkable 11 seasons. Along with "Good Times," "Sanford and Son," "Maude," "One Day at a Time" and "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear basically dominated the decade. It was a creative hot streak that's never been matched and one that Lear could never replicate.
After the 1978 premiere of "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear went ice cold. "The Baxters" and "Palmerstown, USA" only hung around for two seasons, while "Hanging In" and "aka...

Matthew Perry died from the acute effects of the anesthetic ketamine, according to an autopsy released Friday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office.
The results of the autopsy listed drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine (used to treat opioid addiction) effects as contributing factors. The manner of death was ruled an accident. There were no signs of foul play.
“At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression,” the report, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, states.
The report says that none of the following substances were detected: alcohol, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, Pcp and fentanyl.
The report describes Perry as being on ketamine infusion therapy with the most recent therapy reportedly one-and-a-half weeks before his death.

David Hyde Pierce says that his absence from the Frasier reboot wasn’t due to hard feelings — but a busy schedule and a new story to tell that made him decide to pass on the Paramount+ reboot.
The actor, who notably played Niles Crane, the younger brother to Kelsey Grammer’s Dr. Frasier Crane, opened up about his decision not to return while speaking to the Los Angeles Times about his upcoming role in the Julia Child series Julia and in the late Stephen Sondheim’s final work, Here We Are.
“I never really wanted to go back,” he told the outlet. “It’s not like I said, ‘Oh, I don’t ever want to do that again.’ I loved every moment. It was that I wanted to do other things.”

Many talented directors stood behind the camera to direct the cast of Friends throughout the series’ 10-season run. However, did you know that former 1970s teen idol Robby Benson helmed half a dozen episodes?
Robby Benson directed some of ‘Friends’ early episodes
Robby Benson was a wildly popular teen idol in the 1970s. In seasons one and three, Friends, Robby Benson also directed some of the series’ funniest episodes. Under his guidance, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and the late Matthew Perry flourished.
The episodes were “The One With the Ick Factor.” He followed that up in season three with “The One With All the Jealousy,” “The One Where Monica and Richard are Just Friends,” “The One With Phoebe’s Ex-Partner,” “The One With the Hypnosis Tape,” and “The One With the Ultimate Fighting Champion.”

In /Film's review for the "Frasier" revival, Josh Spiegel described it as neither disappointing nor remarkable. Which is pretty much the perfect description for the supporting characters. After Jane Leeves, who played Daphne Moon on the original series, and David Hyde Pierce, who played Niles, passed on the opportunity to come back, showrunners Chris Harris and Joe Cristali had to go back to the drawing board. Along with star Kelsey Grammer, who remains the only original cast member to return in a recurring capacity, Harris and Cristali drew up a new plan for their revival show.
Now airing on Paramount+, that show has done its absolute best to chart a new course for Frasier Crane while remaining faithful to the original show. There are even callbacks to "Cheers" where the character of Frasier first debuted. But try as it might, the new series just can't seem to overcome the lack of the original supporting cast.

From “Cheers” to “Frasier,” Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane was a mainstay of comedy TV for 20 years, from the ’80s to the early-aughts. Now, after an equal amount of time off the air, Grammer is back in the role for Paramount+’s “Frasier.”
The streaming series is a revival-meets-reboot that once again spins off Grammer’s character with a new cast of colorful characters. Some original “Frasier” stars will return to guest star. However, David Hyde Pierce won’t return as Niles and John Mahoney, who played their father Martin, passed away in 2018.
That means Frasier – along with “Frasier” fans – will be surrounded by new faces. With that in mind, here’s a handy guide to the new “Frasier” cast and characters, including where you might have the actors before.

"It is with a heavy heart I say goodbye. The times we had together are honestly among the favorite times of my life," LeBlanc said in a note accompanied by various images.
"It was an honor to share the stage with you and to call you my friend."
LeBlanc vowed to "always smile" when thinking of his friend.
"I'll never forget you. Never," he affirmed.
"Spread your wings and fly brother you're finally free. Much love."
LeBlanc didn't let the message end without throwing in a little Joey Tribbiani.
"And I guess you're keeping the 20 bucks you owe me."
LeBlanc starred opposite Perry on all ten seasons of NBC's hit comedy series Friends.

The entertainment world is still reeling from the sudden loss of Matthew Perry, the affable charmer who rose to fame as Chandler Bing on "Friends." The loss is greater considering that Perry was only 54 years old at the time of his passing, and how much closer fans felt towards him after his incredibly honest memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," came out just last year. Perry's autobiography received most of its press due to Perry revealing, in great detail, his severe problems with alcohol and substance abuse. The book helped make the man behind the curtain, so to speak, just as likable as the onscreen persona that he'll be most remembered for.
It's hard to imagine anyone else playing Chandler Bing at this point, and Perry wound up bringing a lot of his personal life to the part. As the show was ramping up for its first season,...

If you, like me, were someone who watched and loved "Friends" -- even with its many flaws -- you're probably doing a rewatch right now. The world lost Matthew Perry on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54, and it's pretty hard for fans to process. Perry, who played loveable goof Chandler Bing, struggled with addiction to alcohol and drugs during his time on the hit NBC series and afterward, according to his 2022 book, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir." Though it will be some time before we know the cause of death for my favorite Friend, viewers are recalling their favorite episodes and Chandler moments, and remembering the show for what it was.

Matthew Perry’s comedic genius was apparent from the very first episode of Friends.
That’s according to storied television director James Burrows, who helmed the pilot “The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate,” and would go on to direct 15 total episodes throughout the iconic NBC comedy’s 10-season run. Burrows spoke to the Today show on Thursday, one day after Friends creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane also opened up to the outlet about the immense loss of losing Perry at age 54.
The actor died over the weekend on Saturday; he was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles home and his cause of death is still pending.
Looking back on the very first episode of Friends, initially known as “The Pilot,” Burrows recalled how inventive Perry was with performing a single line as well as his facial expressions, whether or not the camera was on him.

I watched Friends when it originally aired. I was in college in the 1990s, when the sitcom launched and became a cultural phenomenon. I carved Thursday nights out of my calendar, reserving the 8 p.m. hour for my Friends obsession, refusing to go out until after my weekly visit with Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe. I was experiencing many of the same things my Friends were: first love, first job and learning who I was — a little Ocd (Monica), deflecting (Chandler) and a dash responsible dork (Ross).
Needless to say, Matthew Perry’s passing has been as emotional a blow for me, as it has for so many others. I remember when Kurt Cobain died and felt the impact of Magic Johnson’s revelation that he was HIV positive. Neither came close to mirroring how I feel now after Perry’s tragic death Saturday at age 54.

Friends was and is a blessing to so many people around the world. And so was Matthew Perry.
The alchemy of brilliant writing, a stellar cast, voice-of-a-generation twentysomethings, and hilarity and emotionality in abundance, made it a wonderful series in 1994 — and unbeknown to all of us, were the ingredients to continue to impact generations almost 30 years after that. As the head of comedy development at Warner Bros. Television at that time, it’s definitely a shining star in my career.
Casting the six Friends, along with creators Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin Bright, was challenging. They all had to be “stars.” The chemistry had to be believable. You just had to love them. And no one was more elusive than Chandler.
We had happily cast David Schwimmer (Ross), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Courteney Cox (Monica) and Matt LeBlanc (Joey), and we had two roles to go just days before we started production on the pilot.
