The Federal Trade Commission is investigating OpenAI’s ChatGPT over whether the artificial intelligence platform that’s been dominating headlines can harm people by publishing false information about them. It’s the latest pushback against fast-moving, still-evolving AI technology that’s disrupting copyright and privacy law and business practices across industries, including Hollywood as SAG-AFTRA prepares to join the WGA on the picket lines.
The Washington Post first reported the probe, publishing the text of a 20-page letter it said the agency had sent to the company demanding records of how it handles risk related to its AI models. ChatGPT is one of the fastest growing consumer apps ever and tech giants are locking horns as they roll out competing chatbots and AI platforms.

Fresh off a siege against Target for the crime of releasing a Pride collection, far-right influencers have been roving the digital countryside looking for the subject of their next meltdown and have landed on a surprising choice: fast food chain Chick-fil-a.
Why are conservative accounts attempting to gin up outrage about Chick-fil-a? Because the company has (gasp) a diversity, equity, and inclusion program. The fervor over the famously Christian chain has reached the point that lawmakers are now getting involved. RawStory pointed out that Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.

Kevin McCarthy hasn’t had a great week, but it got a little better on Friday.
The California congressman lost 11 House speaker ballots over three days, with about 20 Republicans declining to vote for him each time. He’s now lost his 12th, but he gained some ground, picking up votes from Reps. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.), Josh Brecheen (R-Okla.), Michael Cloud (R-Texas), Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.), Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), Ana Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), Mary Miller (R-Ill.), Ralph Norman (R-s.C.), Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.), Scott Perry (R-Pa.), Keith Self (R-Texas), and Rep.

Kevin McCarthy really, really, really wants to be speaker of the House of Representatives. It’s not coming. The 118th Congress began on Tuesday, and though Republicans won control of the chamber last November, a not-insignificant portion of the party remains steadfastly opposed to giving McCarthy the gavel. McCarthy has lost three consecutive speakership ballots, with 19 Republicans opposing him on the first two, and 20 on the third.
Rep. Byron Donalds joined the 19 other defectors to vote against McCarthy on the third ballot, which means McCarthy is drifting even further away from securing the majority necessary.

The Justice Department on Friday released a redacted version of the affidavit that led to the FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago earlier this month. Trump’s team had been clamoring for the affidavit’s release, presumably believing it would reveal that the warrant was illegitimate.
This was … not the case.
The filing instead laid out the key particulars of the investigation into the former president, noting that authorities had reason to believe he was hoarding “fruits of crime” and other illegally stored government materials in his South Florida estate. It...

There’s a baby formula shortage in the United States. Republican lawmakers and conservative media members are taking frustration out on immigrants.
Fox News hosts have spent the past 24 hours raising hell over immigrant babies at the U.S.-Mexico border receiving formula, arguing that it should instead be distributed to Americans first. “[For] American families there’s a shortage, but if you’re a migrant, don’t worry because Uncle Sam has a stash of that,” Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy said Friday morning.

Republicans — the party that decided it was pretty much fine that a violent mob stormed the Capitol to try to overturn Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss — are clutching all of their pearls over the leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion that overturns Roe v. Wade.

There’s a scene in the Season 2 finale of “For All Mankind,” a series that explores an alternative universe where Russia is first to land on the moon, that isn’t for the faint of heart.
Astronauts Gordo (Michael Dorman) and Tracy Stevens (Sarah Jones) are attempting to prevent a nuclear meltdown on the moon. The problem isn’t that the lunar rock is on the verge of going Chernobyl, it’s the fact that the once married couple has to step out onto the surface without wearing traditional spacesuits. It’s a mission that suggests there’s no turning back.
For the visual effects team led by VFX supervisor Jay Redd, who has been on the series since its inception, capturing the authenticity of life on the moon is a collaboration among a number of departments including production designer Dan Bishop, special effects supervisor Mark Byers, and stunt coordinator...

Matthew Weiner was a novice showrunner when the “Mad Men” pilot was being shot with the legendary New York production designer Bob Shaw. When AMC picked up the pilot and production moved to Los Angeles, Weiner panicked: How was another production designer going to retroactively re-establish the 1961 Madison Avenue advertising world, which Shaw had crafted from real locations, in Los Angeles on a basic cable budget? Shaw gave Weiner a name: Dan Bishop. “[It was] the first time I saw everybody in the office,” recalled Weiner upon visiting Bishop’s fully dressed Sterling Cooper set. “I can’t explain it, to have this world brought to life and it exceeds your imagination.” Weiner knows how rare it is to have something exist perfectly on the screen of your imagination and for somehow it to become richer, more dynamic and meaningful in reality, but on “Mad Men,” it was an experience that became common.

Sure, Apple TV+ series “For All Mankind” tells a re-imagined history of the U.S. v. Russians space race from the 1960s to ’70s, but careful attention is paid to making the screen presentation impressively accurate. Veteran set decorator Dianna Freas insists that all of the 17 sets have “aesthetic integrity.”
The largest set is Mission Control, which took almost four months to create. The consoles have actual buttons (that work) as well as real graphics, and all the reference books on the shelves are authentic. There are even actual flight manuals in binders. “We used heavy visual research and we were able to match the consoles from Nasa. About half of them are rented,” Freas says. “One of the most challenging things to find were the chairs for that room. They are tanker chairs and you cannot get that many matching chairs, and we needed 40 and they were all created from scratch.

President Donald Trump is back on the attack. After laying low in the latter stages of his Senate hearing, the Commander-in-Tweet continued his victory laps today with a tweetstorm that carved up a few of his foes.
Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman came in for some of the more brutal blows, with Donald Trump Jr. chiming in late on Friday night in support of his firing. President Trump also attacked West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin in a tweet that may have the ulterior motive of undermining a vulnerable Democratic seat. He also pointed out that he received support from “many highly religious people” in his Senate impeachment vote, an elbow against Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who leaned on his standing with the Almighty in becoming the lone Republican to vote against the President.
We’ll add more communications as they roll in. The tweetstorm so far:

“This is a very big production,” declares Ronald D. Moore, executive producer and co-creator of “For All Mankind,” in Gold Derby’s exclusive video (watch above). The new Apple TV+ drama chronicles an alternative history of would have happened if the space race never ended between the United States and the Soviet Union. “We’re starting in 1969 but we’re actually expanding out to 1974 just in the first season,” Moore continues in the featurette. “We are recreating something that really did exist — we are recreating Nasa.”

President Trump kicked off the 18th anniversary of 9/11 by tweeting a picture of himself and Melania standing side-by-side during a trip to survey the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania. The image is a reminder of Trump’s tasteless, self-serving relationship with the attack and its aftermath, and also that he is largely incapable of showing reverence to anything without somehow making it about himself.
Less than two hours later, the president couldn’t help himself from griping yet again that the media hasn’t shown him the same kind of love he shows himself.

President Donald Trump tweet followers got a video message from the Commander-in-Tweet to start off the Sunday communications: “We’re building the wall.”
Trump presented a short video detailing construction of the wall along the southern border, blaming (once again) the Democrats in Congress for stalling earlier construction (he also blamed the media for not telling you).
By next year, 500 miles of wall will be in place, making it easier for border law enforcement to do their jobs, Trump claimed.
It’s been a slow start to the Sunday tweetstorm, perhaps owing to the Sunday golf schedule at Trump National Golf Course. We’ll post more when the rounds are ended.

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

Below you will find exactly what my votes were for the 15th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards on VH1 this Friday night. I’m a member of the Bfca, and therefore an actual, honest to god, voting member for the awards. I have 1/235th of a voice in exactly what wins. This is simply over-analyzing (a rant) the numbers of how I exactly voted. Again, this is how I voted, not the final results of the show, which won’t be known until Friday.

The Oscars are a secret. You never see the ballot of Meryl Streep, George Clooney or James Cameron come awards time. I’m not a fan of that. I know they don’t want to admit they have favorites, but I do. I vote for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards as a member of the Bfca (Broadcast Film Critics Association). My ballot is below, and I think all critics should show what they consider the best, whether they vote in the Ofcs (Online Film Critics Society) or Cfca (Chicago Film Critics Society). The 15th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards airs on VH1 on Friday night.

Obvious picks were Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, And Avatar. Once again, no love for Nine, but I was pleased to see an embrace from this guild for The Lovely Bones. Now that Art Directors, Producers, Directors, and Screen Actors guilds have announced their nominees, the only other “countries” to be heard from are the Writers Guild and American Cinema Editors. We’ll hear from the WGA on Monday and the Ace on Tuesday.

Emily Blunt has impressed critics with her performance on both "The Young Victoria" and "Sunshine Cleaning", leading to her being nominated for two 2009 Satellite Awards titles. When the winners of the awards were announced however, it was unraveled that she has lost to Shohreh Aghdashloo and Mo'Nique.
On Monday, December 21, the International Press Academy made public Shohreh Aghdashloo bested Blunt in the category for Best Actress in Drama, and Mo'Nique stole her chance at securing Best Supporting Actress title. While she failed to add her award collection, her co-star in "The Devil Wears Prada" Meryl Streep took home Best Actress in Comedy/Musical honor for her performance in "Julie & Julia".
The 26-year-old was not the only double-nominated actress who walked away with no kudo. Her fellow competitor Penelope Cruz has to admit defeat as well. Nonetheless, both of Cruz' movies nailed at least one award. "Broken Embraces" was in tie...
