Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of Hurricane Katrina, there wasn’t a lot of archival footage of some of the more devastating moments that producers wanted to depict in Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial — like when the roof came off the Superdome and the 9th Ward flooding. So VFX supervisor Eric Durst said his team went back “forensically” to research those moments before depicting them in the limited series.
It took nine months alone to re-create the breaching of the 9th Ward levee.
“We had to visualize what that was, the breaching of the lower 9th Ward, where a wave of 12 to 20 feet was unleashed. It was like a tidal wave that wiped out everything in its path,” Durst said at Deadline’s Visual Effects + Screen awards-season event. “We wanted to be as accurate as possible. This event took 1,400 American lives. We had to be very...

What would happen if “Glee” cutthroat cheer coach Sue Sylvester met ditzy “Party Down” actor Constance Carmell? Well, according to Jane Lynch, the performer behind both characters, the two would actually get along quite nicely.
“I think they’d be fast friends,” Lynch told Variety at the Season 3 premiere of “Party Down.” “Constance is not the smartest person in the world, but she’s confident in her own goodness. And she has great self-esteem, and deep down inside Sue Sylvester does not. They would be a great…good cop, bad cop. They could do a comic cop show, but I would have to play both characters, and it would be a lot more. Wouldn’t it be great, though?”
The original “Party Down” series, which debuted in 2009, depicts struggling actors working for a Los Angeles catering company as they await their big break. The reboot catches the stars a decade later,...

The multi-layered tragedy of Hurricane Katrina gets the Chernobyl treatment in Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial, a generally nightmarish, sometimes damning new eight-part limited series sure to stick with viewers who stick with it through its poorly focused home stretch.
Five Days at Memorial benefits from not taking on the responsibility of being a definitive Hurricane Katrina chronicle, for now a distinction held by Spike Lee’s HBO documentaries When The Levees Broke and If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise. Using Sheri Fink’s 2013 book Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital as its source material, the Apple series instead is a snapshot that encompasses many aspects of a catastrophe that blended natural disaster and epic human screw-up. But it’s best to acknowledge it’s only “many” and surely not “all,” even...

Apple TV+ is exploring the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in its latest limited series, “Five Days at Memorial.”
The series is based on actual events, chronicling the impact of the hurricane — which quickly became one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country’s history — and its aftermath on Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans. When the floodwaters rose, power failed, and heat soared, exhausted caregivers at the hospital were forced to make decisions that would follow them for years to come.
In a trailer released Wednesday, nurses, doctors, and residents brace for the hurricane as it races toward the city. As the sun rose over New Orleans the next morning, thousands were trapped inside the hospital, begging for help.

Wendey Stanzler has a wealth of directing credits spanning decades in the TV industry.
You've seen her work, even if you don't know it. She's directed Sex and the City, Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Arrow, and myriad others throughout her storied career.
We had the chance to chat with her about her career and directing the pivotal final two episodes of Her current project was directing the last two episodes of HBO Max's Made For Love Season 2.
We bonded quickly over working in a business that can sometimes make middle-aged people feel like senior citizens, and our conversation was easy and pleasant.
While many people imagine those who work in Hollywood to be in a class by themselves, most everyone I speak with proves otherwise.
Wendey is down-to-earth and engaging, which helps to understand why she is so good at her job.

AMC’s “Dispatches from Elsewhere” follows a core group of four seemingly ordinary individuals who are thrust together to be a team to play a mysterious game that include a supposed missing woman and a dodgy corporate institute. The second episode of the show puts the audience in Eve Lindley’s Simone’s perspective: Simone is one of those four people, a trans woman who has felt alone and often uncomfortable her whole life but through this odd situation begins to find herself and make important connections, including with Jason Segel’s Peter.
Lindley: I was so excited that this was a character to exist in the story, being trans but not being some sort of diversity box to be checked. She was very human, and I feel like that’s something I strive for in my life and something I strive for in my characters, too.
Jason is so great to work with.

Exclusive: Freeform has passed on its drama pilot Breckman Rodeo, from writer Steve Lerner, The Americans executive producers/showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, and new Freeform corporate sibling FX Productions.
Breckman Rodeo, starring Jess Gabor and Noah Le Gros, was one of three hourlong pilots at Freeform, along with Party of Five and Motherland, all of which had been garnering solid buzz. The Party of Five reboot was the first of the bunch to score a series pickup in February, followed by the witches-themed Motherland: Fort Salem, which was picked up to series in March, leaving Breckman Rodeo as the only outstanding pilot.
The decision to not go forward with it comes a couple of weeks after Lauren Corrao joined Freeform as new head of original programming.

“Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings,” the Netflix anthology series showcasing memories and inspirations behind the country icon’s most beloved songs, has rounded out its cast.
Melissa Leo, Ray McKinnon, Andy Mientus, Katie Stevens and Michael Willett will star in “Two Doors Down,” in which a family’s “lifetime of secrets” comes bursting out during a chaotic but comedic New Year’s Eve wedding weekend. This episode is written by Mark B. Perry and directed by Wendey Stanzler.
Holly Taylor, Shane McGhie, Robert Taylor, Bellamy Young, Camryn Manheim and Mary Lane Haskell star in “Down From Dover,” in which a pregnant teenager finds support at a home for unwed mothers after being shunned by her father. This story is more complicated by the fact that the man the young woman loves is fighting in the Vietnam War. It was written by John Sacret Young and directed by Erica Dunton.

Sometimes, you really have to love advance promotional material. What some may view as being seemingly innocuous photos may be more telling than one could ever realize. And since this is how we’ve begun today’s conversation, you can probably imagine that some major beans are about to be spilled when it comes to Arrow, so proceed at your own risk.
Still here? Alrighty then.
Even though we’re separated from the midseason premiere by about a day or so, the network has begun circulating images from the episode to follow – “We Fall” – set to air on January 25. And while we don’t know all of what’s going to go down tomorrow night – or even have a trailer for next week’s offering, for that matter – these photos give us a pretty good hint at what’s to come.

Even though we have about a week to go until some of our favorite DC TV shows return for the back half of the current season – with an encore presentation of the Crisis on Earth-x crossover slated for the interim, mind you – we’re able to peer ever so slightly into the future now that more synopses are creeping online. Don’t forget, episode descriptions tend to make their rounds three weeks ahead of time, but thankfully don’t really spoil whatever episodes come before.
Personally, I’m most looking forward to the midseason premiere of Arrow, my favorite of the batch. And if you’re also up to speed, then you’re well aware that it’s been a tumultuous time for those leading dual lives in Star City. With Team Arrow itself effectively fractured, Cayden James and his posse that includes the likes of Black Siren and Vigilante...

While dramatic television has seen a wave of directorial ingenuity over the last 17 years (see our list of the best-directed dramas for proof), 21st century TV will probably be remembered more for the growth of vision in the comedy genre. What was once a format dominated by multi-cam sitcoms with live studio audiences has become the most auteur-driven genre on television, and the results have been some of the most creative and personal series the small screen has ever aired.

In just a matter of weeks, the much talked about season finale of Arrow will arrive, but in the meantime, we must brace ourselves as “Olicity” rears its ugly head for at least one more occasion.
Most fortunately, it appears as though a vocal minority on Tumblr won’t be getting their way by having Oliver and Felicity reconciling as a romantic couple, but we are going to further explore the parameters of their breakup via this week’s flashbacks. Still, it’s a bitter pill to swallow.
On the plus side, we’ll get to see the two longtime allies demonstrate their resourcefulness as they’ve found themselves trapped in the bunker after Prometheus triggered an Emp, effectively knocking out the power. And, to make matters worse, Felicity’s spinal implant has been taken out of the equation for the time being, restoring her paralysis.

In under two weeks, some of our favorite DC TV shows will return to airwaves with new episodes. So, as we continue the sprint toward their respective season finales, it’s only natural that official synopses for each surface well in advance. Given that, we’re able to peer into the future and discuss what’s to come in the first week of May for Supergirl, The Flash and Arrow.
Obviously, we’ll begin with Supergirl, since it’s the first to air. When examining the description, one can’t help but compare Alex being kidnapped by an unknown party to Kara having a price put on her head not long ago. And although Rhea is in this episode, I’m not so sure she’s responsible because this kind of has Cadmus’ stench on it. But, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

The newest episode of “You’re the Worst” pulls off its most ambitious experiment yet: The entire episode is made up of one-shot long takes, the longest one lasting 11 minutes. The camera moves from room to room at a wedding reception, catching up with Jimmy (Chris Geere), Gretchen (Aya Cash), Lindsay (Kether Donohue) and Edgar (Desmin Borges) as all their romantic relationship drama came to a head. And there was no piecing together shorter scenes to make it look seamless here. “There was no editing magic,” Wendey Stanzler, who directed the episode, told TheWrap. “All the takes were complete takes.

Arrow Season 4, Episode 3 “Restoration”
Written by Wendy Mericle & Speed Weed
Directed by Wendey Stanzler
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm Et on The CW
It’s telling how little Arrow tries to hide its plot machinations in this episode; there’s no interaction in this episode that feels natural, each scene filling its role in catalyzing two very obvious plot lines it needs to address before it can move forward with the increasingly-mindless Damien Darhk story. Those two plot lines are bringing Sara back to life and bringing Diggle and Oliver back together – which, considering the former is dead and the latter involves Oliver kidnapping his family, clearly is going to involve some serious contrivances to work. However, when the episode isn’t with Felicity, it’s spent rehashing material from the show’s third season, embracing the very elements that threw it off the rails last season.

I’m struggling to find a place to start with Arrow at this point in the season. Everything’s so convoluted and undercooked, plot points and conversations are flying by at a rapid pace, and as the show increasingly fractures itself between Starling City and Nanda Parbat in this back half, the less any of it feels like its hitting a meaningful place. The climatic moments of “This Is Your Sword” are perfect examples: one features Oliver poisoning the entire crew, even though the entire episode preceding it establishes that Oliver’s been faking it the last few weeks, and the whole opening line with “I was Oliver Queen” is just Arrow having some fun. The other is a wedding...
