According to his fellow costar Rosie O’Donnell, American Gigolo lead Jon Bernthal was more than pleased that Showtime’s neo-noir crime drama was a one-and-done series.
“Jon Bernthal was not happy with the show, and it was very clear,” the actress and former daytime talk show host told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview. “It’s difficult to work that way on a set. He was never happy that he was playing a gigolo. And I’m like, ‘Well, it’s called American Gigolo.'”

"You know what I see? Fear!" Gravitas Ventures has revealed a trailer for Where Are You, a psychological thriller mystery about a photographer. This initially premiered at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival last year, but made no impact and earned no buzz. Now it's being dumped on VOD later this month. A photographer experiencing an artistic decline begins taking his aggressions out on his super attractive artist girlfriend. When she cryptically disappears, he enters his own subconscious, descending down a spiral of mystery and madness on his search for her, as well as himself. The film's ensemble cast features Anthony Hopkins, Camille Rowe, Irakli Kvirikadze, Ray Nicholson, Angela Sarafyan, Mickey Sumner, Melora Walters, Christopher Ashman, Brad Greenquist, and Madeline Brewer. This is a very strange out-of-the-90s trailer that sells it like a "coming to Saturday night TV" movie special. Doesn't seem that exciting. ›››

With its pulsing burble of Blondie music and its chilly aesthetic, the 1980 Paul Schrader film “American Gigolo” is a showpiece of what would soon be the Reagan decade. Some 42 years later, a TV adaptation feels lost in time, and searching for an argument for its existence.
Starring Jon Bernthal and with a pilot written and directed by “Ray Donovan’s” David Hollander (whose ties to Paramount Television Studios were severed during production), “American Gigolo” is lead-footed, and prurient rather than hot.
And Bernthal seems at sea here, an unusual look for a star whose coiled charisma has elsewhere served him well. His Julian Kaye — whose name is shared with Richard Gere’s character in Schrader’s movie — emerges from a 15-year sentence we’re told happened about a decade and a half ago, but nothing about Julian’s world feels of the present day, or of Earth. Julian, we understand,...

Jon Bernthal takes on the lead role in Showtime’s American Gigolo, a dramatic series that’s a reimagining of the R-rated film released in 1980 and starring Richard Gere. The new series moves the story forward to the present day but the show’s official trailer pays homage to the original movie with the inclusion of “Call Me” by Blondie from the film’s soundtrack.
Season one also stars Gretchen Mol (Boardwalk Empire), Rosie O’Donnell (The L Word), Lizzie Brocheré (Falling Water), Gabriel Labelle (Dead Shack), and Leland Orser (Ray Donovan). Wayne Brady (The Wayne Brady Show), Alex Fernandez (Runaways), Sandrine Holt (House of Cards), Yolonda Ross (The Chi) and Melora Walters (Pen15) guest star.

The life of an American Gigolo isn't as easy as one might think.
Forty-two years after Richard Gere made an impression with theater-goers as gigolo Julian Kaye, it's Jon Bernthal's time at the wheel.
American Gigolo is present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film, but it's hard not to notice the similarities between Gere and Berenthal.
The American Gigolo has a specific look, and we can't wait to see what Bernthal does with the role.
The series follows Julian Kaye (Bernthal) after his wrongful conviction and release from 15 years in prison.
He'll be navigating his complicated relationships with his former lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol), his troubled mother, and the people who betrayed him.
While Julian struggles to reconcile the escort he was in the past and the man he is today, Detective Sunday (Rosie O'Donnell) seeks the truth about the murder that sent Julian to prison all those years ago.

Offseason, the new film from writer/director Mickey Keating opens with Ava Aldrich addressing the viewer in a scene that recalls Marianna Hill’s warning at the start of Messiah of Evil.
That film involved a woman’s trip to a touristy coastal town in search of her missing and presumed dead father, Offseason opens with Marie Aldrich heading to the touristy island where Ava is buried. It seems her grave was desecrated and her presence is required to remedy it.
As she and George arrive their trip is almost derailed. It seems the drawbridge to the island is raised during the offseason and the Bridge Man only relents and lowers it after finding out why she’s there. He also warns them that after tomorrow it’ll be locked until spring.

When your dementia-riddled mother starts screaming about nightmares following her and demons crawling out from the water, it doesn’t matter how lucid she appeared beforehand. You tell her what she wants to hear, try to make her as calm and comfortable as possible, and await the inevitable. That’s what Marie Aldrich (Jocelin Donahue) did when Ava’s (Melora Walters) clear eyes and confident voice spun an outlandish tale surrounding the isolated island where she grew up and left without ever going back. She heard her mother’s pleas to ensure no part of her body returned there in death and assured her with a promise that none ever would. Except she had no control. Ava’s will demanded she receive an island burial and the law guaranteed it.

"There's something wrong with this place..." Rlje Films and Shudder have unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Offseason, which originally premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival last year, later stopping by a few other fests. The film is made by an indie filmmaker named Mickey Keating, his seventh feature film so far. After receiving a mysterious letter about her mother's grave, a woman travels to a desolate island town to find out what's wrong and soon becomes trapped in an inescapable nightmare. Starring Jocelin Donahue as Marie, along with Joe Swanberg, Richard Brake, Melora Walters, and Jeremy Gardner. This trailer gives away a lot of the film, but I guess they're trying anything to get people interested somehow. I caught this during SXSW and I was not the biggest fan. At least it's a thrilling trailer. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Mickey Keating's Offseason,...

‘Pen15’ Review: The Final Episodes Provide a Beautiful Ending — and Help Explain Why It’s Time To Go
Part 2 of “Pen15’s” second season is also its last — its last part, its last season, its last anything. Buried the week of release in a New Yorker profile of series leads Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, the trades verified the news and a narrative for “why” soon formed: Erskine and Konkle wanted to end the series after three seasons, but the pandemic — which caused a delay in production and split Season 2 in half — sped up the timeline. Hulu reportedly wants more episodes, leaving the door open for a return someday, but both stars are in-demand, lining up acting gigs and creative commitments elsewhere.
Thankfully, the writers, directors, co-creators, and stars made their decision in time to film a proper ending. Episode 15, “Home,” is a fitting, offbeat series finale, even if the preceding episodes play slightly more melancholic, given the news, and the final scene (which is spoiled in the...

Seventh grade is ending soon: Hulu’s middle school comedy PEN15 will end after its second season, with the final episodes debuting this Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The decision to end the show reportedly comes from stars/creators Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, who play 13-year-old versions of themselves on the series. Hulu wanted to do more seasons and is leaving the door open if the duo wants to return to the show later on down the road.

"If I would've known, I never would've come here." Icelandic horror folktale Lamb moves from 500 to over 800 screens after viewers – can we say flocked? – to the Ari Aster-ish genre pic (Hereditary in 2018 was also from A24). Adventure documentary The Rescue, by the directors of Free Solo, where intrepid divers save a Thai boys soccer club trapped in a remote flooded cave, expands from five screens to 552.

The horror film from Almost Normal Productions centers on Hana (Yancy Butler), who has spent 20 years suppressing a curse that was placed upon her bloodline, only to have a family member knowingly release it, forcing her to kill or to be killed.
Izabela Vidovic, Goran Visnjic, Maiara Walsh, George Harrison Xanthis, and Melora Walters also star.

Tom Hardy returns as the conflicted antihero in an admirably light-hearted but utterly disposable sequel
The overextended world of big-screen superheroes has recently extended even further than previously thought possible with a desperate lurch into the realm of the multiverse, allowing for rules to be rewritten, characters to be resurrected and audiences’ pockets to be milked. It was introduced in 2018’s unusually smart Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse before being teased in the trailer for this December’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and it will probably be dogging the genre for years to come, appetite or no. The Venom franchise, which started in 2018 and continues with Let There Be Carnage, exists in an unofficial multiverse of its own: one that eradicates the elevated, overly self-serious worlds of Marvel and DC and continues directly on from the flip flashiness of the 90s Batman films and the slick straightforwardness of the 00s Spider-Man franchise.

There’s so much brilliance contained within Hulu’s “Pen15” that it’s difficult to know where to start when attempting to dissect what makes the unconventional comedy series work. Created by Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle, and Sam Zvibleman, the coming-of-age story set in 2000, stars Erskine and Konkle as adolescent versions of themselves, fumbling their way through middle school surrounded by honest to god, real life teens.
And though the most natural point of entry to discuss the series would be through stars Erskine and Konkle, there’s another woman toiling away behind the scenes to ensure the series feels as earnest and relatable as possible — by finding the perfect batch of young actors to play opposite its stars.
Melissa DeLizia earned her first-ever Emmy nomination this year for her work casting “Pen15,” as unique a challenge as she’s faced in her career, which has seen her populating a host of recognizable,...

"It'll be just like old times." "That's scary..." Roadside Attractions has revealed the full official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled Hard Luck Love Song, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Justin Corsbie. This premiered at last year's Austin Film Festival, the perfect place for this kind of musician romance tale of ups and downs, and good and bad. At its core, the film is a modern day love story wrapped in a gritty, compelling character study. A love story about a charismatic but down-on-his-luck troubadour living out of cheap motels and making bad decisions. The film is actually based on the song "Just Like Old Times" by Todd Snider. This stars Michael Dorman and Sophia Bush as the two lovers, plus Dermot Mulroney, Eric Roberts, Brian Sacca, Melora Walters, & RZA. So this is a "haunting" love story and a neo-noir western? Well okay, sure why not. Looks...

ShortsTV is presenting The Game Changers: Oscar Winning Shorts That Shaped Hollywood, a virtual theatrical event spotlighting four Oscar-winning short films selected for their roles in “changing storytelling expectations in Hollywood.”
The pics selected are Bear Story (Best Animation 2016), God of Love (Best Live Action 2011), Curfew (Best Live Action 2013) and Six Shooter (Best Live Action 2006). The screenings will be preceded by introductions from ShortsTV founder and CEO Carter Pilcher, who will talk about the films’ impact.
“These four short films breathed new life into storytelling,” Pilcher said. “Bear Story was the first ever Chilean film to win an Academy Award, God of Love reignited a love for black-and-white films, Curfew combined a wide variety of storytelling techniques to tackle difficult topics in an ultimately heartwarming tale, and Six Shooter introduced film audiences to Martin McDonagh’s brand of macabre humor. Each one represents the power of a single short film.

The critically acclaimed “PEN15” is poised to make history at the upcoming Emmy Awards as Hulu’s first-ever Best Comedy Series nominee. The sophomore season of this laffer is currently ranked fourth in our exclusive odds. Two years ago co-creators Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, who play middle school students, reaped a writing bid for the first season; they lost to Phoebe Waller-Bridge for season two of “Fleabag.”
In season two of “PEN15,” their characters continue to navigate school life, including love-obsessed witchcraft phases and dealing with divorced parents, while maintaining their everlasting friendship. The show rose in the estimation of critics and has a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes (up 6% points) and is at 93 on Metacritic (up 11). It could ride this wave to the Emmys, where the Best Comedy Series race is wide-open with only one of the past two years slates of contenders (“The Kominsky Method”) eligible again.

Seasonal beach towns feel haunted once balmy temperatures start to tumble. Remove the cheery masses, ice cream vendors and sizzling sands overtaken by crowds, and you’ll be left with eerily quiet streets, alongside waves echoing with distant memories of summer days. Set on one such mostly vacant (and likely fictional) island getting ready to shutter before an impending storm, writer-director Mickey Keating’s unnerving “Offseason” comprehends the particular creepiness of an insular vacation spot braving the year’s colder months. Though thinly conceived overall with not much philosophy to back its daunting visuals, “Offseason” still offers some genuinely spine-tingling images and sounds that will keep midnight audiences on their toes until the end.
Indeed, once you shrug off its thematic emptiness and occasionally clumsy dialogue, Keating’s genre exercise proves to be an absorbing enough watch, with Jocelin Donahue’s resolute Marie leading the way in a survival tale made of nightmares.

If you’re a genre fan, chances are you’re pretty familiar with the array of work from Mickey Keating, Jocelin Donahue, and Joe Swanberg that runs the gamut of horror from the last decade. The trio recently collaborated together on Keating’s latest film project, Offseason, which is set to debut later today at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival. Written by Keating and featuring a handful of other notable performers including Melora Walters, Richard Brake, and Jeremy Gardner, Offseason is centered around a young woman who must travel to a mysterious Florida town to try and settle some family business, but finds herself caught in a living nightmare and desperate to escape the clutches of the sea-faring community.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Keating, Donahue, and Swanberg about their experiences working together on Offseason, and they discussed the inspirations behind the project, the film’s unusual locale,...

For the 2021 iteration of the fest, SXSW is going virtual, which gives more people the opportunity to get to experience their brilliant lineup of films this year. As someone who is already well into my SXSW viewings for this year, I can confidently say that this might be SXSW’s best slate of Midnighters from top to bottom, and a few other genre and genre-adjacent films that are premiering in other sections are very much worth your time as well.
So, if you’re looking to check out some excellent horror and sci-fi cinema during this year’s SXSW from the comfort of your own home, here are 15 different projects you’ll definitely want to make time for. Oh, and because I included both How it Ends and Violation during my Sundance 2021 preview,...

First films of important directors usually feel like warm-ups, but not so this suspenseful story of ‘twilight’ people living in and around casinos. Paul Thomas Anderson writes and directs in a style that guarantees our full attention at all times. Philip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel L. Jackson assay riveting main characters, with Philip Seymour Hoffman in for a brief turn at the crap tables. It’s all behavior and relationship detail — are we reading each individual correctly? Are we going to learn more about them? When the surprises come, the story takes shape in its own unique way.

Many corners of popular culture, from talk show “Desus & Mero” to sitcom revival “One Day at a Time” to sweatshirts on Instagram, have been putting forward a very positive message about mental health, championing therapy while also destigmatizing anxiety. That spirit of supportiveness suffuses “Pink Skies Ahead,” a coming-of-age tale of a young writer who learns to let go of her anxiety over having anxiety. (The film has been acquired by MTV Studios for worldwide release following its premiere at AFI 2020.)

He appeared in Knives Out in a scene-stealing role, he also recently directed a segment in the horror anthology Scare Package, and now he’s playing a cowboy who must take on a coven of witches for Aaron B. Koontz’s The Pale Door, which heads to theaters this weekend and will also be available to stream on VOD and Digital Platforms as well, courtesy of Rlje Films and Shudder.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Segan about his involvement with The Pale Door, and he discussed his experiences collaborating with both Koontz as well as his fellow co-stars, the fun of getting to transform himself into a cowboy and how he hopes to add the title of “feature film director” to his resume in 2021.
So great to speak with you, Noah. You’ve been having a great run lately...

When you try to attack a genre piece, especially a Western, on a low-budget the story and characters have to do a lot of the heavy lifting. Sure the costumes might look stagey and the frame a little too clean for the period, but at least there’s a good theme to hold onto. The Pale Door, directed by Aaron B. Koontz (Camera Obscura), unfortunately doesn’t quite get there. While it has a few good performances and spirit to spare, it doesn’t have the story to rise above it’s lower budget trappings.
The Pale Door could be best described as a horror/Western. It’s a film about a group of outlaws, including brothers Jake and Duncan, who fail to rob a train and end up in the clutches of a mysterious whorehouse.
