ESPN basketball analyst and former NBA player Austin Rivers is apparently no fan of the theory of the willing suspension of disbelief.
The son of former Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers took some time on his Off Guard podcast to rip into the new Hulu series, Clipped. The program is based on the ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs, which depicted the time when former team owner Donald Sterling was caught on tape making derogatory racial remarks.
In a clip posted on Instagram, Rivers took issue with the casting of several actors, starting with guard Stephen Curry: “That is Stephen Santiago. That’s, like, the third baseman for the Padres. Who the hell is that guy?”
He also had something to say about the casting selection for Clippers star Blake Griffin and J. Alphonse Nicholson’s impression of point guard Chris Paul: “That is my local A/C man, Frederick. Who is this? Who the hell is that?”
Sheldon Bailey as Clippers center DeAndre Jordan was mocked as well. “There’s no effort in this. That looks nothing like DJ.”
Surprisingly, the only one to avoid most of the slams was the man playing Rivers’s father, Doc Rivers.
“Laurence Fishburne is a legend, and he’s a great actor,” Rivers said, before adding, “The body of my father is just a little bit different. I’m not saying he’s 100% in shape, but he’s built a little different than Laurence Fishburne. We could’ve done a little AI or something there.”
Clipped also stars Ed O’Neill as Sterling, with Cleopatra Coleman as his assistant V. Stiviano.
Coming up: Austin Rivers is portrayed later in the series. We await his critique.

Spoiler Alert: This article discusses the third episode of “Clipped,” “Let the Games Began,” now streaming on Hulu.
Laurence Fishburne had never even heard of Doc Rivers before signing on to play the perennial NBA coach in FX’s “Clipped.”
“I’m not a sports fan. My manager is a Clippers season-ticket holder, one of the faithful. I had thought that she sent this to me because it was a promotion for her team. And that turned out not to be the case,” Fishburne says, then chuckles. “At all.”
Indeed, the 2014-set limited series follows the basketball organization at its all-time nadir, gripped by a scandal that’s much more demeaning and grotesque than the Clippers’ legacy of losing seasons. This week’s episode of “Clipped” follows the team’s PR spiral after TMZ publishes an audio recording of octogenarian owner Donald Sterling (Ed O’Neill) delivering a racist tirade to...

Would The Matrix starring Will Smith as Neo and Val Kilmer as Morpheus still be as legendary? Fans will never get to live in this reality as the Wachowskis’ modern-day classic changed the sci-fi and action genres with Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne in those roles. The film was one of the highest-grossing films of the year and redefined the sci-fi genre.
Will Smith has turned down many roles in his career but the Bad Boys star reportedly regrets turning down Neo the most. He mentioned that he could not see the vision of the filmmakers as he had received an awful pitch from the Wachowskis. He mentioned that their terrible pitch for The Matrix involved a very crude explanation for the iconic ‘bullet time’ sequence.

When the first trailer for Transformers One rolled out (from outer space), the response from fans was mixed. The animation style wasn't what most expected, while Thor star Chris Hemsworth replacing iconic Optimus Prime voice actor Peter Cullen was always going to divide opinions.
Well, a "work-in-progress" cut of the movie was shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival yesterday evening and early word isn't just good, it's overwhelmingly positive.
"It is exactly what it has been described as - an origin story for how two young robots went from being besties to mortal enemies, ultimately known as Optimus Prime and Megatron," The Wrap explains. "The animation style previewed in the early trailer; a kind of painterly, 1980s lunchbox aesthetic, is very much present in the final film — all vibrant colors and shiny surfaces."
The trade describes it as "something joyful, beautifully alive," claiming applause broke out at several points in the movie,...

An unfinished version of Transformers One was screened at the Annecy Animation Festival earlier today, and the audience gave it a rousing standing ovation. Although those who saw the Transformers One screening have been sworn to silence, the first reactions that have emerged paint a very positive picture.
Director Josh Cooley introduced the movie, saying, “I’m very, very excited. So much talent and nostalgic love has gone into this movie.” He also thanked the team behind the film as the “greatest animators and CG artists in the world,” while also giving a shout-out to Industrial Light & Magic. Turning to the audience, he added, “I want to thank you all for being ‘audience one.’“

Director Josh Cooley took to the stage at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Monday to introduce a packed screening of a work-in-progress version of Transformers One.
“I’ve got that feeling you get when you’re giving a present and you know they’re going to be excited about it,” he said.
He had gauged the mood to a T with the Annecy spectators – most of whom weren’t born when the last Transformers theatrical animated feature film came out in 1986 – going wild for the film.
Transformers One is billed as the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, who are now sworn enemies but were once friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of their native home of Cybertron forever.
Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Scarlett Johansson lead the star-studded cast, which also features Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne and Jon Hamm.

In a recent interview, Thunderbolts* star Julia Louis-Dreyfus confirmed that she had finished filming her scenes as the scheming Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, but was hesitant to discuss the movie in any more detail.
However, the Seinfeld alum was a little more forthcoming while speaking to The New York Times, suggesting that Thunderbolts* might be more character-focused than we expected.
"It's very well organized. Very methodical. And I don't mean that in a negative way," Louis-Dreyfus said of her time working on the Marvel Studios' team-up film. "Particularly on this film, they're very much focused on, frankly, the human story, believe it or not. They're trying to sort of go back to their roots, as it were. And so there's a lot of focus on that. They're trying to stay away from as much CGI or whatever as possible, so that the stunts are, like, everywhere. And in fact,...

Though Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* is still shooting, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has finished filming her scenes as the scheming Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

Maybe the Matrix can’t tell you who you are but Carrie-Anne Moss can tell you the impact it had. It’s kind of hard to believe that The Matrix came out 25 years ago, redefining special effects and bringing action flicks into the 21st century both visually and narratively. The sequels didn’t get close to living up to the original but the 1999 film remains a truly groundbreaking essential.
A quarter-century after it became one of the biggest pop culture topics in the world, Carrie-Anne Moss – who played Trinity to Keanu Reeves’ Neo and Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus – reflected on the legacy of The Matrix, saying, “It was such a unique film at that time. The movie that launched a million memes has lost none of its conspiratorial power, and its action sequences still dazzle – but was it actually trying to tell us something we’ve all missed?
To paraphrase Apu in The Simpsons, this was the year filmgoers were partying like it was on sale for $19.99; it offered the vintage of American Beauty, Fight Club, The Sixth Sense and more. But The Matrix seemed to me then – and seems to me now – more exciting than any of them, first among equals in the previous century’s final graduating class. Rereleased for its 25th anniversary, this barnstorming sci-fi paranoia thriller, produced by action veteran Joel Silver and written and directed by the Wachowskis, holds up tremendously well. The martial arts sequences choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping are gripping and nothing about the bullet-time effects or production design feels dated. Even the ringing payphone – an unexceptional detail...

Clipped revolves around the downfall of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling after one of his racist rants comes to light while the team is trying to win a championship under coach Doc River, who is trying to hold the team down long enough to get the cup.

“Freeze mother bitches!” What’s the all-time best buddy cop movie ever made? 48 Hrs? Lethal Weapon? Beverly Hills Cop? Rush Hour? The Nice Guys? In terms of story and dramatic action, any one of these titles warrants serious consideration. But when it comes to the onscreen rapport and natural chemistry between two stars in a buddy cop movie, it’s hard to beat 1995’s Bad Boys – the directorial debut of the divisive filmmaker Michael Bay. Sure, Bay has earned a rightful rep as a bold and boisterous music-video director turned filmmaker who favors big, dumb, pyrotechnic excesses over quality cinematic storytelling.
However, Bay does deserve at least a modicum of credit for pairing the comedic talents of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence together as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett – two immensely likable Miami narcotics officers who trade crackling banter and witty one-liners whose onscreen partnership drives the engagement and entertainment level.

In preparing for the role, Fishburne said that in addition to combing through the script, he had an up-close opportunity to check out the real Doc Rivers in action. ‘Clipped’ Review: FX’s American Basketball Story Is a Salacious, Shrewd Account of NBA Racial Strife
Initially, “Clipped” seems content to recap the embarrassing and abhorrent factoids that make up Donald Sterling’s tenure as the owner of the L.A. Clippers. When legendary coach Doc Rivers (played by Laurence Fishburne) initially arrives in Los Angeles — eager to start laying the foundation for the organization’s first NBA title — the team forgets to pick him up from Lax. Ok, no problem, he’s happy to order his own Uber. But then Sterling tries to block Doc’s big free agent acquisition because J.J. Reddick, it turns out, is white. Similarly troubling and peculiar events pile up as the story bounces from the shrewd coach to Donald’s wife and co-owner of the Clippers, Shelly Sterling (Jacki Weaver), to a perplexing female employee who goes simply by V. (Cleopatra Coleman).
But like V. herself — and, really, like each of “Clipped’s” main characters outside of the purposefully oafish,...

While many might still say HBO is the best American network for prestige television, FX has forcefully inserted itself into the conversation in the last few years. From the rabid animal that is The Bear to the densely historical Shōgun, the channel commands respect just by placing its name in front of a series. Knowing how incredible FX’s track record in the 2020s is, it came as a pleasant surprise when it was announced the network would be adapting a recollection of Los Angeles Clippers basketball owner Donald Sterling’s racist downfall at the end of the 2014 NBA season.
Using extensive research and journalistic fortitude from ESPN reporter Ramona Shelburne, Clipped takes the already wild story of Sterling’s banishment from professional basketball and sensationalizes certain aspects of the saga for a wider audience. Both basketball fans who can quote the events verbatim...

Summertime tends to be a quieter yet exciting period for the average TV viewer, as the broadcast season hiatus leaves room for big streaming and cable offerings to take center stage.
There might be a bit of a decrease in output now that the Emmy submission period is over, but there’s no lack of new and returning shows across broadcast, streaming and cable this summer. While the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will keep the world’s attention in late july, the return of Amazon’s “The Boys” and HBO’s “House of the Dragon” will surely have fans talking throughout the next few months, while new shows like “Star Wars” spin-off “The Acolyte” on Disney+ and the animated “Terminator Zero” hope to burst into the zeitgeist. Broadcast will also have some returning favorites with new seasons like “The Bachelorette” and more.

Equal time rules do not, in fact, apply to slightly fictionalized treatments of the real-life trials and tribulations of professional basketball teams, but for at least an hour it’s hard to shake the feeling that FX/Hulu’s six-parter Clipped exists as a make-good for the surplus of programming dedicated to the Lakers.
In terms of tone and style, that first episode of Clipped plays like the scrappy and far less enjoyable and successful younger brother to HBO’s Winning Time, an apt parallel for the relationship between the Clippers and the Lakers.
This sells Clipped a bit short. I watched the pilot twice, separated by several months. The first time, I thought it was a mess, more cartoonish and broad than it had any reason to be. The second time, once I’d gotten all the comparisons to other shows out of my system — once I’d stopped...

Last year, a bidding war was going down between Netflix and Amazon for a lucrative package deal. The two streaming giants were in a fight to acquire the film rights to the novella by Don Winslow called Crime 101. The package deal had included two attached stars — Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal. Although, Pascal has now reportedly been replaced by Mark Ruffalo. It also has a director set to helm the project with Bart Layton, whose credits include the documentary The Imposter from 2012 and American Animals from 2018. Amazon had come out as the victor and according to Deadline, Saltburn and Masters of the Air star Barry Keoghan will now join the heist film.
Crime 101 is said to be a crime drama in the vein of Michael Mann’s Heat. The plot of the film has yet to be released; however, Deadline’s summary of the novel reads that “the...

As we head into the summer, Hulu is shaping up to be one of the most valuable streaming services to have in the month of June. Not only is one of the best shows on television returning for its third season, but the Disney-owned general entertainment platform is also launching a new comedy banner, and FX goes behind the scenes of one of the most explosive situations in recent sports history.

Deadline reports that Chris Hemsworth is in talks to star in the long-awaited crossover movie between the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises, which was first teased in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. As we know, Hemsworth is already part of the Transformers universe as he’s voicing Optimus Prime in Transformers One, the upcoming animated movie about the origins of Optimus Prime and his future nemesis, Megatron.
There have been rumblings of a live-action crossover between the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises for quite some time, but the first steps were taken in Rise of the Beasts. At the close of the film, Anthony Ramos’ character gets a job offer from the Joes. Director Steven Caple Jr. told THR last year that while the studio was keen on the idea, it took almost two years to get everyone to sign off. “I had to talk to all the producers and...

Marvel Studios has done a pretty good job of keeping a lid on the upcoming Thunderbolts* movie, right down to that mysterious asterisk that was added to the title just before filming began. We've been able to piece a few things together via leaks and cast interviews, but for the most part, the project remains shrouded in secrecy.
Now, some new story details have found their way online. There's nothing too revealing here - and there's a decent chance this much, at least, will be highlighted in the first trailer - but if you'd rather know as little as possible, here's your spoiler warning.
According to Daniel Richtman, the movie will begin with Yelena Belova, US Agent, Ghost and Taskmaster being sent by Contessa Valentina Allegra De Fontaine to take out an unknown target "in a vault." We don't know who this character is, but the crew soon realize that...

In FX’s Clipped, we first meet Doc Rivers (Laurence Fishburne), the real-life basketball coach of the L.A. Clippers, in 2013 just as he’s taking over the so-called “worst franchise in NBA history.” He has his doubts about the team, especially the presence of their volatile, self-important owner, Donald Sterling (Ed O’Neill), but he knows that his legacy will be sealed forever if he can put a ring on the finger of L.A. basketball’s ugly sister.
The scenes of Rivers whipping these perennial losers into shape are pure shots of sports-drama pathos. After a bracing defeat to a hardier team, the players begin the next training session with Rivers viciously trash-talking each of them. He goes after their personal lives and their partners, hitting them all in their most vulnerable spots. They start barking insults back at him, and then at each other, and he smiles. From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.

Per the official description, the fourth season will follow Geralt, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan) as they “are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other.
