- DirectorFrank CapraStarsJames StewartJean ArthurClaude RainsA naive youth leader is appointed to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. His idealistic plans promptly collide with corruption at home and subterfuge from his hero in Washington, but he tries to forge ahead despite attacks on his character.Utopian
When Mr. Smith enters United States Senate his honesty collides with the corrupted world of politics, but once he's in he refuses to give up on his righteousness. The movie is somewhat naive and utopian, but it's very well done and very entertaining. Eleven nominations for Academy Award and Oscar for the Best Original Story are well deserved.
8,5/10 - DirectorFrank CapraStarsJames StewartDonna ReedLionel BarrymoreAn angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed. It's a wonderful movie. :D
8,5/10 - DirectorJohn HustonStarsHumphrey BogartWalter HustonTim HoltTwo down-on-their-luck Americans searching for work in 1920s Mexico convince an old prospector to help them mine for gold in the Sierra Madre Mountains."Ah, as long as there's no find, the noble brotherhood will last. But when the piles of gold begin to grow... that's when the trouble starts."
I'm left speechless. This movie is perfect. John Huston did an awesome job researching background for this movie, writing the screenplay and directing one of the best movies of all time. He won two Oscars for the same movie and his father got the third one. Walter Huston is one of the best actors of his time and, though he had a supporting role, he stole the movie from much more famous Bogart. To be honest, Bogart deserves Oscar for this movie too and Holt is not far behind either. I cannot recall last time I saw a movie whom I cannot find any faults. Although the story has a very complex and deep characterization, all roles are perfectly played and overall atmosphere of the movie is simply magical. It sucked me in completely and two hours just flew in a blink of an eye. The ending is karmically perfect. It gives us innuendo of how stories of our heroes end and more than anything I wished to see those endings, but instead I got only ending credits. Happy endings are left to our imaginations.
One of the very best movies I ever saw. Pure 10/10.
"You know, the worst ain't so bad when it finally happens. Not half as bad as you figure it'll be before it's happened." - DirectorMax OphülsStarsJoan FontaineLouis JourdanMady ChristiansA pianist about to flee from a duel receives a letter from a woman he cannot remember, who may hold the key to his downfall.Painfully bittersweet
"Oh, if only you could've recognized what was always yours, you could've found what was never lost."
9/10 - DirectorCarol ReedStarsOrson WellesJoseph CottenAlida ValliPulp novelist Holly Martins travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, Harry Lime.True masterpiece
From today's perspective, this story is nothing special, even though it is a bit ahead of its time. Acting, music, directing, everything's good, but not that much to put this movie in ranks with the best accomplishments of all times. What makes this movie so special is one of the most deserved Best Cinematography Academy Awards in movie history. Although this movie is from the ancient 1949, cadres, angles, the play of light and shadow are still fascinating even today. Especially at the very end of the movie where grand finale in sewers and epilogue at graveyard left me breathless. In the endless sea of Hollywood hyper-production, it is good to see such a masterpiece every now and then and remind yourself why movies are considered to be a form of art.
10/10 - DirectorBilly WilderStarsWilliam HoldenGloria SwansonErich von StroheimA screenwriter develops a dangerous relationship with a faded film star determined to make a triumphant return."This movie deserves all the accolades it has gotten here, as well as Maltin's four stars. It certainly ranks up there as one of Hollywood's greatest achievements. Seeing it again only reinforces my opinion that William Holden was one of the truly great actors of the last century. Gloria Swanson, however, steals every scene she's in; you can't turn away from watching her, even though she makes you really uncomfortable - it's like watching a train wreck. I don't know if the black & white was an economic or an artistic choice, but the film would never have been as effective in color. The opening shot - the floating, dead body of Joe Gillis, eyes wide open, shot looking up from the bottom of the pool - is one of the great shots, and an unforgettable opener, matched perfectly by the unforgettable closing closeup of Norma Desmond. To have Cecil B. DeMille actually play himself was an inspired touch. Throw in Eric von Stroheim and you have an unbeatable combination. Truly one the all-time must-see films, although I don't know how to classify it - film noir? black comedy? Hollywood fable ? horror story? psychodrama? Who cares; just see it." - Robert D. Ruplenas
8,5/10 - DirectorJoseph L. MankiewiczStarsBette DavisAnne BaxterGeorge SandersA seemingly timid but secretly ruthless ingénue insinuates herself into the lives of an aging Broadway star and her circle of theater friends."Too bad, we're gonna miss the third act. They're gonna play it offstage."
A realistic drama about show business and life in the backstage of Broadway and New York theater. It was nominated for fourteen Academy Awards, more than any other film in history, until "Titanic" caught up half a century later. It has won six Oscars, among which are those for the best movie and the best screenplay, but all four nominated actresses have lost. The role of Margo Channing is considered the best performance in Bette Davis' career.
8,5/10 - DirectorDavid LeanStarsWilliam HoldenAlec GuinnessJack HawkinsBritish POWs are forced to build a railway bridge across the river Kwai for their Japanese captors in occupied Burma, not knowing that the allied forces are planning a daring commando raid through the jungle to destroy it.Madness! Madness!
A lot could be said about this movie, but I feel that its brutal reality cannot be adequately put to words. You should experience it for yourself. Still, if one has to summarize it, the best way to do it is to quote Major Clipton's last line.
8/10 - DirectorOrson WellesStarsCharlton HestonOrson WellesJanet LeighA stark, perverse story of murder, kidnapping and police corruption in a Mexican border town.A movie that takes time to settle in your soul, but once it does you won't regret it
If I rated this movie last night, right after I saw it, I would rate it lower for sure. This is not cheap entertainment that gives you instant satisfaction. While I was watching it, it was a bit tiring and at times even boring. But today I cannot get it out of my mind. The story is well designed not to entertain, but to, using Film-Noir atmosphere, penetrate in depths of the human soul and touch its evil side. Many movies are made with this theme, but those are mostly action or thriller movies, while this one is, in my opinion, drama. I do not want to comment on Heston's performance as I don't like him too much, but Orson Welles, beside writing a great story and directing the movie in which almost every shot is work of art, did excellent job in role of aging inspector who, driven by great trauma from his past and with not a little help of alcohol, slowly moves more and more to the dark side, until he is completely lost. In main female role is beautiful Janet Leigh, whom you surely know from Hitchcock's "Psycho".
8/10 - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsCary GrantEva Marie SaintJames MasonA New York City advertising executive goes on the run after being mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies, and falls for a woman whose loyalties he begins to doubt.Hitchcock at his best.
- DirectorWilliam WylerStarsCharlton HestonJack HawkinsStephen BoydAfter a Jewish prince is betrayed and sent into slavery by a Roman friend in 1st-century Jerusalem, he regains his freedom and comes back for revenge."How do you fight an idea?"
This is one of the best movies of all time and it deserves all eleven Academy Awards it has won. After more than half a century it's still breathtaking. Three and a half hours of the movie and I didn't even blink once.
10/10 - DirectorDavid LeanStarsPeter O'TooleAlec GuinnessAnthony QuinnThe story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks.10 nominations, 7 Oscars won and not single one female role. I did not notice that at all while I was watching this great movie, but then I read that fact somewhere and started to rewind the movie in my head. Three and a half hours of movie and completely without any women in it. It must be very good movie if I didn't notice absence of women lol.
- DirectorRobert MulliganStarsGregory PeckJohn MegnaFrank OvertonAtticus Finch, a widowed lawyer in Depression-era Alabama, defends a Black man against an undeserved rape charge, and tries to educate his young children against prejudice. What kind of a man are you?
I do not want to analyze this film. It seems like a desecration. It is enough to say that the American Film Institute declared Atticus Finch the number one on the list of greatest movie heroes of all times, and that Mary Badham was nominated for Oscar for the role of Scout, when she was only 10 years old. This is one of those movies where one watching is enough to remember them for the rest of your life.
10/10 - DirectorArthur PennStarsWarren BeattyFaye DunawayMichael J. PollardBored waitress Bonnie Parker falls in love with an ex-con named Clyde Barrow and together they start a violent crime spree through the country, stealing cars and robbing banks."This here's Miss Bonnie Parker. I'm Clyde Barrow. We rob banks."
The cult gangster movie based on real characters and events has won two Academy Awards out of ten nominations and is rightly considered one of the best films of all time and probably the best in the genre. It served as inspiration for many films that followed, my favorite being "Natural Born Killers". Required watching.
9/10 - DirectorMike NicholsStarsDustin HoffmanAnne BancroftKatharine RossA disillusioned college graduate finds himself torn between his older lover and her daughter. He did mother and daughter and it isn't even a porn
Mike Nichols deservedly won Academy Award for this story about a college graduate, torn between his older lover and her daughter. It is coming of age love drama sprinkled with some hilarious moments. Dustin Hoffman nailed the role and it launched his career. The story is well-written, well-played and directed, with great photography, but probably the best thing about this movie is the music of Simon and Garfunkel. Still, I wouldn't place it amongst the greatest movies of all time.
8/10 - DirectorJohn SchlesingerStarsDustin HoffmanJon VoightSylvia MilesA naive hustler travels from Texas to New York City to seek personal fortune, finding a new friend in the process."Wouldn't you say that the wonderful love of these two men in Midnight Cowboy, a story about two fags, qualifies as a perverse movie?" - John Wayne
Two years after he was nominated for an Oscar for his role in "The Graduate," Dustin Hoffman decided to raise controversy to a higher level and earned another nomination. The homosexual relationship of the main characters is not explicitly portrayed anywhere, but only strongly implied, although the director originally wanted to include a sex scene. But whether it is seen as a homosexual love or as a "buddy" movie, the story is equally striking and tragic. Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight did great in their roles and the chemistry between them is strong, and John Schlesinger faithfully preserved the taste of 42nd Street in the late sixties. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards (both Hoffman and Voight were nominated for the Best Actor in a Leading Role) and won them for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. It also earned a handful of other awards and nominations, it is included in the American Film Institute's list of the "Top 100 Greatest American Movies", most lists of the best and most controversial movies of all time, as well as Steven Schneider's "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die." An interesting detail is that Schlesinger once said that he was inspired by the Yugoslavian 1967 film "When I Am Dead and Gone".
8/10 - DirectorBernardo BertolucciStarsMarlon BrandoMaria SchneiderMaria MichiA young Parisian woman meets a middle-aged American businessman who demands their clandestine relationship be based only on sex.Go, get the butter
It took me days to come to my senses after watching this movie. Wow! Marlon Brando was nominated for an Oscar for this part. His competition were Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, and Robert Redford, and the Oscar went to Jack Lemon. Definitely tough competition. I could not decide which one of them is more awesome.
Fun fact - Bernardo Bertolucci was sentenced to four months in prison in Italy for making this movie, while in America he was nominated for an Academy Award.
8/10 - DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsAl PacinoRobert De NiroRobert DuvallThe early life and career of Vito Corleone in 1920s New York City is portrayed, while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on the family crime syndicate.Where's Oscar for Pacino?!
I liked it better than the first one, but I still think it's overrated. It is unfair that Pacino didn't win an Oscar for the role of Michael, because he definitely deserved one. Brando won it for the first movie and De Niro for this one, but, in my opinion, Pacino was better than both of them.
8/10 - DirectorSidney LumetStarsAl PacinoJohn CazalePenelope AllenThree amateur bank robbers plan to hold up a bank. A nice simple robbery: Walk in, take the money, and run. Unfortunately, the supposedly uncomplicated heist suddenly becomes a bizarre nightmare as everything that could go wrong does.Speechless...
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJodie FosterCybill ShepherdA mentally unstable veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action."You talking to me?!"
- DirectorNagisa ÔshimaStarsTatsuya FujiEiko MatsudaAoi NakajimaA passionate telling of the story of Sada Abe, a woman whose affair with her master led to an obsessive and ultimately destructive sexual relationship.Japanese erotic drama that, balancing on the edge of pornography, tells captivating story of love, passion and obsession that leads to inevitable death.
MUST WATCH - DirectorMoustapha AkkadStarsAnthony QuinnIrene PapasMichael AnsaraThis epic historical drama chronicles the life and times of Prophet Muhammad and serves as an introduction to early Islamic history.A movie about the beginning of Islam
I am Orthodox Christian, but I must acknowledge this masterpiece. Allegedly, the movie is historically precise, and if it really is, then there's no essential difference between Christianity and Islam. Trouble does not lie in opposition of two religions, it lies in the existence of greedy, blood-thirsty politicians who incite religious fanaticism and abuse basically peaceful religions to accomplish their political and economic goals. Anyway, if you're not Muslim, you just have to put your prejudice aside (if you have any) and you'll enjoy this excellent piece of cinematography.
10/10 - DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.Kubrick's top three
I never paid too much attention to directors and in the most of the movies I saw I was unable to recognize them. Besides Lynch and Jarmusch, Kubrick is one of the few that I could never mistake for someone else. All of his movies, however different their stories might be, share that insane atmosphere that simply screams Kubrick. Frames, angles, sound and his particular kind of creepy unmistakably betray him. While watching any of his movies I have flashes from his other movies. Although their plots are not related, this movie reminds me of "2001: A Space Odyssey" and bit of "Clockwork Orange", and with those two makes the holy trinity of Stanley Kubrick's heritage. In my opinion, one of the best movies of all time.
10/10 - DirectorSylvester StalloneStarsSylvester StalloneTalia ShireBurt YoungRocky faces the ultimate challenge from a powerful new contender, and must turn to a former rival to help regain his throne as the undisputed fighting champion. He made one more remake of "Rocky" and he nailed it again
After "Rocky II", which is almost a remake of original "Rocky", "Rocky III" is pouring sand in the desert. If someone told me what is it about, I would be like - Really, Sylvester, how long do you think you can take people's money by simply rearranging the same movie in slightly different arrangements?! The answer is - Obviously longer than common sense allows. The movie was blockbuster, it launched the song "Eye of the Tiger" in unbelievable heights, and it achieved crazy success in every way. However crazy it may sound, rearranging of the Rocky story works and it works well. The story is good, acting and directing too, the soundtrack kicks ass, and the movie keeps attention from the first till the very last moment, and it really leaves a strong impression. I'm a little bit ashamed to like it, but I really do, very much.
8/10 - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHenry ThomasDrew BarrymorePeter CoyoteA troubled child summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape from Earth and return to his home planet. One of my favorite childhood memories
I was very small when I saw this movie for the first time and, believe it or not, E.T. was pretty much scary to me. Because of that I was refusing to watch it again for years. But when I finally did, it was experience one never forgets. And even now, decades later, this movie evokes deep emotions and even makes me cry. It may be simple and technically outdated, but its essence has eternal value. "E.T." is that kind of movie that should definitely be watched from time to time and for which you are never too old.
9/10 - DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.Almost there... :D
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsWillem DafoeHarvey KeitelBarbara HersheyThe life of Jesus Christ, his journey through life as he faces the struggles all humans do, and his final temptation on the cross. It is accomplished!
"The dual substance of Christ - the yearning, so human, so superhuman, of man to attain God... has always been a deep inscrutable mystery to me. My principle anguish and source for all my joys and sorrows from my youth onward has been the incessant, merciless battle between the spirit and the flesh... and my soul is the arena where these two armies have clashed and met." - Nikos Kazantzakis, from the book "The Last Temptation of Christ"
This controversial drama by Martin Scorsese is based on the novel of the same name by Nikos Kazantzakis, and brings us a portrait of Jesus Christ with all the virtues and flaws, fears and temptations of a realistic human being. Personally, I believe that Jesus was not a historical figure, but that he was the creation of the Church authorities, who composed his teachings from the teachings of several preachers from several periods, because they needed the Messiah to pass off their teachings and doctrine. But even if he has walked the land, the way he is portrayed in this movie seems to me more plausible than any other display of the Savior that I encountered so far. The film has an unusual and controversial approach to the presentation of Jesus' life (so much that in France Catholic fundamentalists burned several cinemas during its screenings, which resulted even in one fatal outcome) but if you watch it with an open heart and mind, without prejudice, I believe that you will realize that such an approach is not a blasphemy, but to a conscious, intelligent viewer can be much more susceptive and effective in conveying Jesus' teaching than the classic approach. The author of the book wrote in the prologue: "This book is not a biography; it is the confession of every man who struggles. In publishing it I have fulfilled my duty, the duty of a person who has struggled much, was much embittered in his life, and had many hopes. I am certain that every free man who reads this book, so filled as it is with love, will more than ever before, better than ever before, love Christ."
"Harmony between Earth and the heart, that is the world of God."
I do not think there's a need to spend words on Scorsese's directing. With a budget of seven million dollars, which is a fairly low budget for this kind of film, Scorsese has done a miracle and earned an Oscar nomination. At first, Willem Dafoe did not appeal to me as Jesus, but bit less than three hours later I can no longer imagine anyone else in that role, and Harvey Keitel perfectly presented the counterweight role of Judas. Although already forty years old, Barbara Hershey is captivating in the role of Mary Magdalene, and I have no objections to performances of the rest of the cast either. The music of Peter Gabriel significantly contributes to the atmosphere, and the end of the film is one of the most memorable in my cinephile "career." I warmly recommend it to both believers and nonbelievers, because of the messages that the film conveys and which will, at least subconsciously, affect your view of the world, and as an unforgettable movie experience.
"Thank you, Lord, for bringing me where I didn't want to go." - Jesus
10/10 - DirectorJim SheridanStarsDaniel Day-LewisBrenda FrickerAlison WhelanChristy Brown, born with cerebral palsy, learns to paint and write with his only controllable limb - his left foot.Daniel Day-Lewis' first Oscar, well earned <3
8,5/10 - DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsAl PacinoDiane KeatonAndy GarciaFollows Michael Corleone, now in his 60s, as he seeks to free his family from crime and find a suitable successor to his empire. My favorite part
This is my favorite part of the trilogy. In the previous movies Pacino lost the race for an Academy Award, but it is really disgraceful that this time he wasn't even nominated.
8/10 - DirectorJonathan DemmeStarsJodie FosterAnthony HopkinsScott GlennA young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.Hopkins is reason enough
I have no idea how many times I saw this movie in the past 25 years, but it keeps my attention every time the same as the first. It deserves all 5 Oscars it won. Excellent story and legendary Hopkins that makes you shiver even when you already know the movie by heart.
8/10 - DirectorOliver StoneStarsKevin CostnerGary OldmanJack LemmonNew Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison discovers there's more to the Kennedy assassination than the official story.Makes you wonder...
Either this specific case happened this way or not, this is how things work in the USA... and probably almost everywhere else in the modern world. Anyway, the strong message brought up by an excellent film crew.
9/10 - DirectorPaul VerhoevenStarsMichael DouglasSharon StoneGeorge DzundzaA violent police detective investigates a brutal murder that might involve a manipulative and seductive novelist."I'm in love with you already, but I'll nail you anyway."
I do not understand shockingly bad rating of "Basic Instinct" on film sites. I think Michael Douglas has no major career failures, and this erotic thriller launched Sharon Stone, whose appearance and performance in it have long since entered the legend. Hollywood was threatened by the disappearance of sex from the silver screen, but this cult tandem, with a lot of controversy, brought it back in fashion. Within the genre, few films can be compared with this creation by Paul Verhoeven. Pure ten.
10/10 - DirectorRon HowardStarsTom CruiseNicole KidmanThomas GibsonA young Irish couple flee to the States, but subsequently struggle to obtain land and prosper freely.A beautiful fairytale-like love story
Terribly underrated movie. Not only that it did not win any awards, but it's nominated for the worst in some categories. People use its historical inaccuracy and too many clichés as arguments against it. So what?! This is not a textbook for history but romantic drama/adventure and clichés are part of its genre. Put aside prejudice and too much analyzing and enjoy a beautifully told love story with good scenography and awesome landscapes. This movie is exactly what it was supposed to be. Tom Cruise before he became annoying and Nicole in all beauty of her youth have a chemistry that won't leave you indifferent.
8/10 - DirectorJeremiah S. ChechikStarsJohnny DeppMary Stuart MastersonAidan QuinnA mentally ill young woman finds her love in an eccentric man who models himself after Buster Keaton.Beautiful story
Mary Stuart Masterson plays a mentally ill girl who lives with her brother. His life is reduced to work and taking care of the ill sister, without any privacy or dedication to himself and his own life and future. And then in their lives enter Johnny Depp in the role of a weird semi-literate boy, a fan of Chaplin and Keaton, and Oscar-winning Julianne Moore in the role of a local waitress. Nothing pretentious, pretty much predictable, but sincere, strong, romantic and most of all fun.
8/10 - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsLiam NeesonRalph FiennesBen KingsleyIn German-occupied Poland during World War II, industrialist Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis.Too long, but amazing
21 October 2016
I just watched it for the first time and it really is highly above average movie, excellent in every aspect except for one. It has the same issue as "Apocalypse Now", it is too damn long. In the middle, I simply had to give up. However, a few hours later I decided to finish it and, of course, I was amazed. Movies that can nail you to the screen without even blinking for over three hours are extremely rare, and this one, same as "Apocalypse", is not one of them. Because it is stretched too much and only because of that, I cannot give it more than 8/10. If it stayed under two hours it could be pure 10/10.
8/10 - DirectorLasse HallströmStarsJohnny DeppLeonardo DiCaprioJuliette LewisA young man in a small Midwestern town struggles to care for his mentally-disabled younger brother and morbidly obese mother while attempting to pursue his own happiness.Excellent cast in great drama and beginning of Leonardo's epic adventure to win Oscar. Many times he deserved it and failed to win it, but never as much as for this role. Possibly his life achievement.
8,5/10 - DirectorEmir KusturicaStarsJohnny DeppJerry LewisFaye DunawayA young New Yorker goes to Arizona where he finds freedom to both love and dream.Perfect.
10/10 - DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTim RobbinsMorgan FreemanBob GuntonOver the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion."Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes, really. Pressure... and time. That and the big goddamn poster."
Many believe that the IMDb Top 250 list is quite bad and unrealistic. I partially agree. The trouble is that cult classics, that have passed the test of time, are mixed with the latest blockbusters that enjoy enormous but only temporary popularity. Many of these films have a high rating due to strong marketing and internet hype, and will disappear altogether within a few months or maybe a few years, but I think that the positions of the films that have been on the list for more than a decade, with little variation or without any, pretty much reflect their real quality. "The Shawshank Redemption" deserves the first place it holds.
To me, this movie is just perfect. Great camera, masterful directing, a pace that makes two and a half hours simply fly by, top actors and their performances, well-integrated music, and most importantly Darabont's excellent adaptation of the King's story, make this film a timeless masterpiece. This prison story found the perfect balance between drama and humor, sadness and joy, alienation and friendship, malice and empathy, terror and hope. It can be viewed as an interesting adventure with a great plot twist, but also as a metaphor for life in general. "The Shawshank Redemption" was nominated for seven Oscars, it is at or near the top of almost every list of best films of all time, it's Freeman's favorite own film, King's favorite adaptation of his own story, by far the best adaptation of King and, if not the best, certainly one of the best movies of all time. I saw it several times and not once have I been able to write about it right after watching. It simply leaves me speechless every single time.
10/10 - DirectorNeil JordanStarsBrad PittTom CruiseAntonio BanderasA vampire tells his epic life story: love, betrayal, loneliness, and hunger. The best vampire movie
In an endless sea of vampire vomit, this movie stands as one of the best movies in vampire "genre" and, after every vampire crap I have a misfortune to see, I gladly go back to this one to wash off crap from my brain.
I don't like Kirsten and I hate Tom Cruise, but here both of them fit perfectly. Brad is good by default, I love Christian, and the only issue is Banderas. I simply cannot see him as a vampire, but his role is too small to influence the overall impression.
8/10 - DirectorMichael AptedStarsJodie FosterLiam NeesonNatasha RichardsonIn a remote woodland cabin, a small-town doctor discovers Nell - a beautiful young hermit-woman with many secrets.Injustice
Academy Award nomination is not enough. For this role they had to give her at least one. I mean... she has only two Oscars, she's terribly underrated.
8,5/10 for the movie
20/10 for Jodie Foster - DirectorBryan SingerStarsKevin SpaceyGabriel ByrneChazz PalminteriThe sole survivor of a pier shoot-out tells the story of how a notorious criminal influenced the events that began with five criminals meeting in a seemingly random police lineup."The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist"
This cult thriller has everything - great story, engaging characters portrayed by an extremely awesome cast, mystery, plot twists, witty humor, just enough action and one of the best movie ending twists ever shown on big screen.
9/10 - DirectorShekhar KapurStarsSeema BiswasNirmal PandeyRajesh VivekThe story of the bandit queen Phoolan Devi who was sent to prison in 1983 and got free in 1994."Any man that marries a little girl... I'll kill him."
"Bandit Queen" is the true story of the legendary Phoolan Devi, who was something like Robin Hood of India. While the authorities persecuted her, the media made her famous. In order to avoid the death penalty in the case of capture, in 1983, she surrendered to the authorities, but after eleven years in prison she ran for parliament. She was assassinated in 2001.
The film has a problem with the scenario, some parts are false and in some places it seems hastily and piled up. In all other respects it is greatly made, but quite heavy and difficult.
8/10 - DirectorMike NewellStarsAl PacinoJohnny DeppMichael MadsenAn FBI undercover agent infiltrates the mob and finds himself identifying more with the Mafia life--at the expense of his regular one.Great story and even better cast. Really strong movie. "The Godfather" of the nineties.
8,5/10 - DirectorJohn WooStarsJohn TravoltaNicolas CageJoan AllenTo foil a terrorist plot, FBI agent Sean Archer assumes the identity of the criminal Castor Troy who murdered his son through facial transplant surgery, but the crook wakes up prematurely and vows revenge.John Travolta & Nicolas Cage... enough for me
FBI veteran Archer is finally catching his sworn enemy, Castor. He learns that this powerful criminal has set up a bomb that will blow up the whole city, but since Castor is in a coma there is no way to question him. So he decides to do a face transplant and posing as Castor tries to find out the location of the bomb. Meanwhile, Castor wakes up without a face, forces the surgeon to transplant Archer's face to him and takes over his identity, both in the FBI and in private life, making Archer's life a total mess.
This action thriller with a sci-fi premise is full of plot twists and represents a wild ride from start to finish. Travolta and Cage thoroughly studied each other and nailed their roles. Recommendation.
8/10 - DirectorÁlex de la IglesiaStarsÁlex AnguloArmando De RazzaSantiago SeguraBent on committing as many sins as possible to avert the birth of the beast, a Catholic priest teams up with a Black Metal aficionado and an Italian connoisseur of the occult. Now, he must become an unrelenting sinner. Is there still hope?R.I.P. Jose Maria
The Catholic priest, Metal-head and TV presenter on the occult join forces in order to prevent the birth of the Antichrist and the upcoming Apocalypse. This excellent Spanish occult crime-action-comedy will surely entertain you, if you close your eyes to the fact that it makes one great injustice. Of the three main characters, the writer had to kill the metal-head. Not the priest, not the TV presenter, but the metal-head. Not fair...
8/10 - DirectorFranklin J. SchaffnerStarsCharlton HestonRoddy McDowallKim HunterAn astronaut crew crash-lands on a planet where highly intelligent non-human ape species are dominant and humans are enslaved.Excellent satire of human civilization
From today's point of view this movie could seem a bit naive, but for 60's it is a masterpiece. If we take exception to outdated technology, I can not find any flaws in this movie. Camera and directing are great, the movie is a feast for the eyes. And satire of human civilization is excellent. Film tackles burning issues of 60's and 70's, that are still relevant today - hunt for sports, treatment of animals and nature overall, the conflict between science and religion, precisely between evolutionism and creationism, and most of all fear of nuclear war that was at its peak those days. Although I knew vaguely what this movie was about and I guessed how it ends at the very beginning, it did not spoil excitement a bit. I was not surprised by anything in this movie, but I was thrilled by everything. True masterpiece.
9/10 - DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittEdward NortonMeat LoafAn insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.Chuck Palahniuk... even if it is not good it must be fun :D
I wouldn't align it with all-time masterpieces, but it definitely is a great movie. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton nailed the lead character, but from them, I didn't expect anything less. Meat Loaf additionally spiced winning combination. But my biggest surprise was that movie was based on Chuck Palahniuk novel. Although I saw it many times, that "detail" never caught my eye. Chuck is completely nutz, but the movie did not indicate his style to me. Now I definitely have to read the book. The movie itself is fast, entertaining and with good twists, although the main twist is somewhat predictable if you are watching the movie carefully enough. If there is anyone who didn't see it so far, you should correct that mistake urgently, and for others, it won't harm you to refresh your memory, there are always new details you missed before.

You don't have to. Just watch this twisted masterpiece. I have no clue how anyone came to this awesome idea, but its originality itself is enough to make this movie worth your time. When you add good director and a great cast in the story full of weird surprises, you get one unforgettable piece of cinematography and an excellent entertainment.

But here's one completely opposite. This movie I could praise for hours without danger of being left with no material. I saw it many times and I'll see it many times more. And every time I get excited like the first, cause this movie is simply perfect. Everything from opening credits and font to ending credits is just right. Kevin smith is, in my opinion, one of the most original and creative writers and directors of our time. Story is perfect, at the same time exciting and relaxing, intelligent and silly, full of positive energy, satire and humour, with genius dialogues. Movie gathers many top actors, musicians and stand-up comedians, and all of them, in spite of relatively low budget, decided to participate in this project with all their hearts and gave amazing performances. List of actors itself is reason enough to see this film. Movie that holds strong messages and depth behind screen of silly comedy.
10/10
Movie caused controversy and disapproval cause it appears to make fun of faith, but it's just at first glance. Smith himself is a believer and his intention was not to make mockery of faith, but to use funny approach to bring it closer to younger generations that are repelled by rigidity of Church, and at the same time to hit negative aspects of Catholic dogma with some good satire. That's why it is important to see this movie without prejudice, so you don't end up caught in trap of misunderstanding and hating or loving it for wrong reasons.

Subjective tastes are very diverse and opinions of movie fans most often vary throughout the 1-10 scale, but in most cases majority agrees. However, there are movies that divide the audience into completely opposed groups of those who praise and those who bash the movie, with negligible few of those who rate it somewhere in between. When you scroll through the reviews for "Gangs of New York" you can see either 1/10 bashing or 9-10/10 hymns. And all the arguing between those groups is in vain. They'll never agree. In this particular case, I'm with those who praise it. I am not able to prove the worth of this movie to you with facts. The magnificence of this movie is not in analyzing the objective quality of its components, it's in the overall impression it leaves. And I was very impressed. I won't go into the historical accuracy of this movie for two reasons: I do not know the facts and I absolutely do not care. I will not analyze the story-line or dialogues. The cast consists of a bunch of great and well-known actors that rarely fail, and based solely on their performances, especially Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as the overall visual impression, I rate this movie the strong

Drama about fear and prejudice, about false morality and double standards, about racism and political correctness that goes more and more into extremes, until it becomes equally evil as the evil it fights against. I always loved Hopkins and with every new movie I love him more. I think there's no role he cannot nail and make story deeper and stronger. And if I continue to watch movies with Nicole Kidman I risk falling in love. A few days ago, when I saw "Far and Away", my antipathy towards her weakened, and after "The Human Stain" it completely disappeared. Now I just need to see "Moulin Rouge" once again and I'll start sticking her posters around the room like a teenager.

Someone in my FB movie group recently mentioned this movie and I couldn't recall it in my memory, so I went to take a look at my own review. But there wasn't one. When I saw it again, I understood why I didn't write anything after the previous watching. I had to sleep on it, for impressions to settle, before I was able to evaluate it, even subjectively.
"It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly's wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world." - Chaos Theory
And in essence, this is the basis of the film's plot. Ashton Kutcher plays a young man who finds a way to change the details of his own past, thus completely changing the present and the future. Unfortunately, every time he fixes one thing, he simultaneously messes up something else, embroiling himself in playing God more and more.
It's fun to watch actors from your favorite series ("That '70s Show", "Daredevil", "My name is Earl"...) all together in the same movie. When actors go from film to film, there is not enough time to connect them closely with the characters they interpret, as is the case with actors who interpret the character in the series from episode to episode for many seasons. And when they appear in a movie, after we've watched them for years as the same characters in a series, it is a bit strange. And when there are more such actors in the same movie... confusing.
For its relatively small $ 13 million budget, the film is technically great, the acting is good, and the story keeps your attention from start to finish. I mostly like the fact that the film has a mindfak charm, although it's not one, because everything's pretty much clear all the time. There are four alternative endings and both times I saw "director's cut", which has the most striking finale. I don't want to write spoilers, but if you saw or will see this version, pay attention to the relation between the scene where Ashton's mother tells him that she had a few miscarriages and the way our protagonist resolves the whole situation. When my brain linked these two things, the entire movie significantly gained strength.

I don't know how to say anything about this movie without spoiling it. It is a mindf**k movie, which is my favorite genre. Industrial machinist with an extreme case of insomnia slowly but surely loses his weight and his sanity. The cast is excellent, but they are all in the shadow of ingenious Christian Bale, whose transformation for this role is almost unbelievable. He nailed it, and this role is Oscar material.

"Kinsey" is a biographical drama about biologist Alfred Kinsey, who in the middle of the last century first seriously devoted himself to the study of human sexuality, causing serious controversy and creating enemies in religious and puritan circles. During the 15 years of research, he interviewed about 18,000 people and eventually became completely obsessed with this topic, losing all moral brakes and engaging into the practical exploration of his own sexuality. Besides Liam Neeson who nailed the leading role, there are also Laura Linney, Chris O'Donnell, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Curry, Oliver Platt, and genius John Lithgow. Very interesting, informative and at times shocking and dramatic, this is a film you won't forget and which certainly won't leave you indifferent.

This movie is completely different than anything I've ever seen. The plot is pretty much vague and deviates from the original story by Edgar Allan Poe. It is horrifying slow and story itself is inessential for the film, it is just a background for an artistic cinematography. Jean Debucourt is excellent in the leading role while all other characters are dim and unreal, like they are just parts of his dream. I did not like the music background in this movie at all. In my opinion, it does not contribute to the movie, but rather spoils it. But, the gloomy and eerie atmosphere of this masterpiece can not be spoiled. This movie absolutely deserves honorary Best Cinematography Oscar, because the way it is filmed is ingeniously hypnotizing and scenes that flow before your eyes will mesmerize you into a perfect nightmare. Visually speaking, this is one of the very best movies I have ever seen, and not only in the context of the black and white era, but in the whole history of cinematography.

This movie drove me crazy. I barely forced myself to see it through because it is extremely annoyingly done and I rate such movies 2/10 (1/10 is for those I gave up on), but when it finally ended I was under such an amazing impression that I wanted to rate it 10/10.
The story is inspired by "Romeo and Juliet", but placed in NY in the mid-20th century, where two members of opponent teenage gangs fall in love. Acting, directing and music are great. The movie is extremely emotional and possesses strength and atmosphere of a theater. It has all prerequisites for excellence. And it won 10 Oscars. But...- Everything in this movie is overemphasized and I hate that. However, if I observe it as a theatrical play on canvas, I can get over it.
- The movie starts with an instrumental intro with a frozen screen. It lasts around five minutes. At first, I thought my movie player was stuck, then I tried to find another version online and I almost gave up on watching this movie, when I finally realized it is supposed to be that way. Why would anyone do such thing I really have no idea, and that's the first minus.
- It's a damn musical. And one of those needlessly stretched to two and a half hours by completely redundant musical numbers. The first half of the movie is almost unwatchable and I was at the edge of giving up several times. But curiosity about how the story will go kept me going on. The story is great and some musical numbers tell parts of the story, but a good part of them just have no purpose in the movie. They are just for enjoying the music (which I did not) and to double the length of the film. That's the second minus.
- Just when I decided to stick it out or simply fast forward redundant parts and watch this movie till the end, the ultimate deal breaker happened that left me shocked. The scene where two gangs are closing to "battlefield" and mass brawl/rumble itself are shown in the form of ballet. BALLET?! Even if I didn't hate ballet, which I really do, I mean, really?! Teenage mass fight as a ballet... wtf?! The ultimately stupidest thing I saw on a big screen. Instant embarrassment transfer. Huge minus, I mean really really big.
- And then, in the middle of the movie, there's one more musical intermezzo with a frozen screen. That was too much for my nerves and I turned it off.
But, later it bothered me how the story ends and I decided to see another half too, the very next day. The second half had more story and action and less redundancy, and musical numbers are a structural part of the plot. And the ending made me cry. And how should I rate it now...

Finally! I always nag that most of the long movies do not have the power to keep my attention that is adequate its length. I saw original "King Kong" and when I realized that remake lasts nearly 200 minutes I did not even want to watch it. I would make a huge mistake. A friend was persistent in recommending it to me so I gave up and I am amazed, I loved it. The story is told with much more details, better acting, modern effects and followed by excellent music, while it did not lose any of its original charms and emotion. One of very few movies that kept my undivided attention for more than three hours, by a perfect balance of action and depth, and even brought few tears on several occasions. Masterpiece, shoulder to shoulder with "LOTR". Plus Naomi Watts... I would watch even the biggest crap if she was in a leading role.

Soon he leaves Vienna, but fifteen years later returns and, under the new name, becomes a famous illusionist. They meet on one of his performances and the old flame revives. Since she is now a fiancé of the Prince, it will take much more than the cheap tricks to reunite them.
This mysterious romantic drama features superb cinematography, dark atmosphere and a great cast, led by Edward Norton, one of the greatest actors of his generation. The main female role was meant to be interpreted by Liv Tyler, but, luckily, she gave up at the last minute, and in her place came the fascinating Jessica Biel. There are also Rufus Sewell in the role of Prince and Paul Giamatti, who was excellent in perhaps the most interesting role in the film. The story is told elegantly, with a sophisticated sense of humor and details, and all the time keeps you in anticipation and speculation, not allowing your imagination to sleep.

This is far from the masterpiece of cinema, but I really do not understand such low ratings on movie sites. The film is an adaptation of the famous bestseller by Dan Brown, which is not high-quality literature but it certainly is highly entertaining. It is directed by Ron Howard, starring legends such as Tom Hanks, Ian McKellen, Jean Reno, Paul Bettany, Alfred Molina... So, the story, directing and acting are guaranteed good. Personally, I've always enjoyed the conspiracy theories, and when one thus interesting is transferred to the big screen by such a great team, I really do not understand all this hate. Very morbid and disturbing, but at the same time very poetic. It is a kind of movie where you expect Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Tim Barton to show up around the corner, but not enough fairytale-like or too realistic for them. Surely it is not horror, it's beautiful child drama. The whole movie is made from the point of view of eleven years old girl, so she carries the whole movie on her own from the beginning till the end. And to successfully pull off that at such a young age is quite amazing.

An upsetting drama about three underage sisters who grow up with a drug-addicted mother, who turned the family home into a scum-den, a gambling and whoring house. Jennifer Lawrence plays the eldest sister, who tries to replace the mother to the younger ones and spare them the hell in which they live as much as possible, while she herself becomes a victim of rape and self-deception. There is also ten-year-old Chloë Grace Moretz in the role of one of the younger sisters, who is already announcing her acting capacities. In post-apocalyptic America, Denzel Washington is a lone traveler, a missionary who has been traveling west on foot for three decades, carrying the last copy of The Book, in search of a place where it will be in the right hands. On the way, he comes across a settlement where the reign of terror keeps people under the boot of a gang led by Gary Oldman, perfect for the role. He tries at all costs to get hold of The Book, in order to expand and strengthen his power. There are also Mila Kunis, Jennifer Beals, Michael Gambon (Dumbledore), and, in a small but impressive role, Tom Waits.
Many say that this movie reminds them of "Mad Max". I agree that there are similarities (if only because of the post-apocalyptic setting that imposes them), but for me, its essence and atmosphere are more like King's "The Dark Tower" (the book, of course, not that lousy movie).
In their last joint venture, the Hughes brothers turned to a genre different from everything they had done before and made an excellent and multi-layered post-apocalyptic SF, which will buy both fans of a good adventure and those who like exciting and well-directed action scenes, fans of post-apocalyptic stories, but also those who are looking for something deeper in the film. This film is not only a warning about nuclear danger, but it also deals with both sides of religion. It supports the sincere faith and the true message of Christianity (or any other religion for that matter) while criticizing its abuse, which unfortunately prevails in organized religion.
Excellent scenery, exciting details, good acting of the leading cast, peppered with several strong actors in striking supporting roles, amusing references to pop culture and some classics of the genre, and biblical quotations, all wrapped in a classic, yet original story, which holds the attention from the beginning to the end. And of course, the plot twist that will make you slap your forehead and wonder how the hell you didn't catch it right away, and it was right in front of your nose the whole time.

This movie should be watched on hallucinogens in the dark of movie theater. Unfortunately, I had to watch it on my computer while eating chicken wings. In the first case I would probably rate it 10, but completely straight I could not avoid being irritated by all its flaws.
The idea is great, the story well developed, although told in a completely twisted way typical for Gaspar Noe. Camera and photography are works of genius, use of colors and strobe, bird's-eye view, unbelievable visual adventure. Though, epileptics and those with hypersensitive eyes should definitely avoid this ride or at least watch it in bright light. You risk a serious headache because, as much as it is beautiful, it is also very heavy for eyes.
Unfortunately, it seems that Noe got into it too deep and lost control after a while. The movie is unnecessarily too long. Scenes of tripping on hallucinogens last five to ten times longer than it would be humane towards the audience. Also, astral flights, between every two scenes Oscar is watching, are too slow and too long. If he cut all of that in half, the movie wouldn't lose any of its meaning or visual poetics, but it would be cut down from almost three hours to under two hours and he would avoid the danger of having half of the audience leaving the theater before the movie ends.
This movie definitely isn't for a mainstream audience. It is too long, too confusing, very explicit in showing drugs and sex, and extremely tiring for eyes. But although I was at the edge of giving up in the first half an hour, the movie slowly pulled me in its world and then it gave me two more hours of hypnotizing ride.
It is very hard for me to rate it. When I have to force myself to watch it till the end, I give it 1/10 or maybe 2/10, depending on the successfulness of that forcing. And when a movie gives me such an amazing ride like this one did and leaves me under strong impressions, it is usually 9/10 or 10/10. But this is the first time I saw a movie that meets both criteria. Still, despite all the flaws, I think this movie is worth more than it seems at first glance.
!!! SPOILER ALERT !!!
At the very beginning of the film, when they mentioned reincarnation and explained how exactly it works and looks like, I instantly knew how this movie will end. And to be honest, it would be stupid to end it any differently. Although, I would make a slight change in it. I would reincarnate Oscar into his own incest child. Somehow it seems to me that movie this sick has to end even sicker. :D

This movie is an adaptation of the theater play of the same name and while watching it I had a strong feeling I was actually in the theater. Only four actors and pretty much static scenography, plus fact that movie is black and white, may be repulsive to the 21th-century audience, but believe me, this is something everybody should see.
I won't even try to summarize the plot, because you could get the impression that this movie is one mediocre, maybe even boring little drama. Why am I giving this movie perfect 10/10, why was it nominated for Oscar in all categories and why is it considered one of the best achievements in the history of film, it cannot be easily explained, or at least I am not able to. This is something you have to experience for yourself. After this masterpiece was over I was sitting still and looking to/through the black screen for at least half an hour more, because I couldn't break away from impressions that blew me away.
10/10 - DirectorShawn LevyStarsHugh JackmanEvangeline LillyDakota GoyoIn the near future, robot boxing is a top sport. A struggling ex-boxer feels he's found a champion in a discarded robot.A hybrid of Rocky and Terminator
In the near future, boxing bored the audience with its limitations. Brutal martial arts are becoming increasingly popular, culminating in the advent of robot fighters, which will satisfy the human urge for destruction from a safe distance.
Hugh Jackman is Charlie Kenton, a former boxer who is desperately trying to survive in this new sport. In deep debt, he learns that his ex-girlfriend is dead and that he "inherited" his eleven-year-old son. Kid's aunt, married to a rich man, demands custody, and Charlie decides to grant her wish in exchange for $ 100,000, which would give him a fresh start. But the rich husband has plans for the summer that do not include children, so he agrees to an agreement with Charlie on the condition that Charlie keeps his son until they return from the summer vacation.
Little Max, played by Dakota Goyo, finds an outdated robot in the junkyard, fixes it, programs it, and trains it for fights, in order to go on tour with his father, from small illegal matches, all the way to the chance to win the world title.
The film is essentially a drama about a growing relationship between estranged father and son, wrapped in a story almost copied from the "Rocky" franchise, only with robots as fighters. Apart from the idea of combining "Rocky" and "Terminator", nothing in this story is original, but all these outworn elements are so skillfully combined and charged with emotions that the non-originality did not bother me for a moment. Moreover, the fact that many scenes irresistibly reminded me of scenes from other, well-known and beloved films from the past, only aroused nostalgia and strengthened the emotional power of "Real Steel".
This was especially contributed by an eleven-year-old boy with disarming eyes. Hugh Jackman is good by default, and his partner is Evangeline Lilly, best known for the role of Kate in the TV series "Lost", as well as The Wasp from Marvel movies. There's also Hope Davis, whom I really liked in "Wayward Pines".
When I say that the film combined "Rocky" with "Terminator", I mean the boy's attitude towards the robot, while visually the robots in are more reminiscent of those from "Transformers". The fights of the robots are excellently filmed and directed, and "Real Steel" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects. But that year the competition was really strong in that field. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2", "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" also lost to five-time Oscar-winner, Scorsese's masterpiece "Hugo".
"Real Steel" may be a cliché, it may be Hollywood pathetic, but the fights kept me on the edge of a chair, and the rest of the story on the edge of tears. I really loved it.

Driss: Where you leave him.
A wealthy intellectual and adventurer experiences an accident and becomes a paraplegic. A young black applies for a job of a caretaker, but he only wants a signature to continue receiving social assistance. Nobody expected that this would result in one of the most beautiful and humorous friendships in the history of cinema. I have no objections, neither from technical nor from the essential side. This is simply a beautiful movie and the emotions it arouses will stay with you for a long time after watching. And when they begin to fade, you just need to watch it again, and again, and again. It can never bore you.

Jennifer Lawrence should give half of her Oscar to Cooper cause both nailed it. She did earn her Oscar, but she was no better than Bradley, so if she got it, he should get one too.
The movie is a bit sleazy, but despite that, it's really good. I saw it when it was released, now I saw it again and I will watch it more in the future. It's kind of a movie that you can't not love, but you also can not say why exactly do you love it.
I do not like Jennifer Lawrence, but in this movie she simply steals our hearts. Really awesome performance.
8,5/10 - DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsJesse EisenbergCommonMark RuffaloAn FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances, and reward their audiences with the money. The closer you look, the less you see
The four magicians respond to mysterious calls to arrive at a certain place at a certain time. A year later, they are "The Four Horsemen", the world's greatest illusionist attraction. The grand finale of their most spectacular performance is to perform the illusion of bank robbery from the stage. It turns out that the bank is really robbed and the police, with the help of the former illusionist, who has reoriented to exposing the illusions of others, is trying to find out what happened and catch the mysterious four.
This film does not possess depth, philosophy, and hidden messages, nor aspire to some sort of artistic value. This is an illusionist action movie, whose purpose is to entertain, and in that purpose, it succeeds. If you're not a film snob and enter this adventure with realistic expectations of this genre, you can expect an awesome ride and you will not lack the adrenaline. Although not comparable to the greatest cinematic achievements, within the framework of its genre and goals it is trying to achieve, this film is perfectly executed and deserves the highest rating. In addition to the other qualities, there's really exceptional cast, among which are Mark Ruffalo (three Academy Award nominations), Woody Harrelson (also three), Morgan Freeman (one Oscar won out of five nominations) and Michael Caine (two out of six).

This is one of those movies that critics destroyed without a good reason. I read bad reviews and I cross myself with left, right and my feet. It got some bad reviews from critics so a bunch of smart-asses decided to lubricate it with their own spit. To be clear, I do not have respect for the majority of professional critics. I especially don't pay attention to negative reviews. On the contrary, they often make me want to see the movie even more. If I skipped everything critics tried to destroy I would miss a bunch of excellent movies.
They say it's not accurate. Accurate to what?! It is not a historical movie and it's not a remake. The old one was a Western classic and this one is an adventure/comedy. They criticize the quality of the screenplay and acting. Sure, no one could get an Oscar for it, but it was not the intention of this movie. This is Disney adventure with the goal to entertain, not to be Nobel prize level literature or Oscar contestant. But what shocked me the most was an argument that appeared in several negative reviews. They said this movie is essentially a Western version of "Pirates of the Caribbean" as if it were a bad thing!!! For God's sake, in what universe this could be shortcoming?! If you did not like "Pirates" why the hell did you even try to watch this? Being a Western version of "Pirates" is probably the main reason I wanted to see this and it is definitely the main reason I loved it.
I had many things to say about this movie, but, after I discovered this phrase, everything else I could possibly say becomes redundant. Those five words are absolutely perfect to describe this movie completely:
Western "Pirates of the Caribbean" equals must watch!!!

I was listening about this movie for years and I had no intention to watch some low budget retarded crap. And then I realized it has 3 more sequels. Wait a minute, if it is failure why would they shoot 3 more. It had to make some serious money if they continued to make sequels. OK, let's give it a chance. And wow, what a movie!!! I hate shark movies, even the famous "Jaws" was retarded for me. But this... this is awesome! I wouldn't say it was a horror, more of a bloody action drama, but it really keeps your attention and occasionally your ass at the edge of the seat. I am thrilled. Definitely my favorite shark movie and favorite horror action. Highly recommended.
P.S. When I saw Steve from "Beverly Hills 90210" in the leading role I thought he is too fatuous for the role of macho hotshot who saves the day, but he did it very well. Awesome awesome movie.

This is not a comedy. The summary on IMDb could lead you to wrong expectations from this movie. It is somewhat funny, but it definitely isn't a comedy. It is a beautiful, deeply emotional drama about the relationship between a single father and his daughter and about ways they handle all the twists life brings. If you did not shed a single tear during this movie, please go to X-ray and check if you have a heart at all. Technically, it is not anything special, just average production, but the emotion it carries is priceless.

Jarmusch, inviolable master of slow psychedelic movies. If you do not like slow movies do not even try to watch this, because there's virtually no plot at all. The movie is based on the characterization of the protagonists, building of heavy atmosphere and it is visually fantastic. Although it technically falls within the vampire/fantasy genre, the movie does not have any of its characteristics. Tilda and Tom for two hours became an old married couple of vampires that will make you forget that vampires are just the fruit of the imagination and experience this movie as exceptionally realistic drama. Of course, Jarmusch wouldn't be Jarmusch if great psychedelic music didn't follow the whole story.
8,5/10 - DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJoaquin PhoenixAmy AdamsScarlett JohanssonIn a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need.Beautiful and frightening
One of the deepest and most beautiful stories about love and the essence of being human. A story that triggers romantic emotions and frightening thoughts about what we became and what is waiting for us around the corner. Scarlett Johansson's talent was always in the shadow of her beauty, but here she finally gets the chance to show her true talent by acting only with her voice and not appearing in flesh at all. But still, she manages to be beautiful and sexy. And one of the most fairly earned Oscars lately goes to writer and director Spike Jonze. This is a true masterpiece. Good directing and acting, beautiful music, and movie that will fill your heart and that you won't easily forget.

A lonely art expert falls for a mysterious heiress that hired him and whom he didn't even see. But what seemed like a promising romantic drama suddenly turned into a nightmare. Although I suspected how it will end, the ending still left me speechless. Technically, this is a mystery drama, but I prefer to classify it as a mindfuck horror, because real human drama is often more horrifying than any Jason or Freddy.

I have about a dozen movies downloaded and I chose this one because it was the shortest one. What a mistake! After ninety minutes film was over and I was in the biggest wtf state of mind than any movie ever put me in. It is far from boring, but it is completely confusing and I expected to finally get it at the end. But then the final scene left me shocked, disappointed, and really really angry. I was like - this is one of the biggest craps ever. I simply could not go to bed without a satisfying explanation of what I just watched. It took many hours of reading discussions and watching video analysis on YT and then watching it all over again until I finally understood it, or at least I think I did. And now I love it and I will surely watch it a few more times.
It's a masterpiece, once you put all the pieces in the right place. So many details that are crucial for understanding that simply cannot be noticed with just one watching. Every picture, poster, graffiti, sign, word, lyrics of background music, book on the shelf, every single word characters say and the way they say it, what they wear, every facial expression and every move they make, things that lay around on the tables ... literally every detail has its place and meaning and is necessary for the understanding of the story. Complete madness.
There are good but different explanations in YT but it is important not to check them before watching as they will spoil the movie completely. Watch the movie, then check out explanations, and then, maybe, watch it again. It's worth the time.

IMDb rating is 7, on web people mostly bash it, but it moved me totally. This drama, with elements of romance, adventure, SF, and even horror, is easy to follow, but heavy if it hits you right. I understand why most people hate it. The movie is good, but it definitely isn't for everyone.
8/10 - DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge.A feast of colour and sound
I'm reading reviews and I cannot believe what I read. Amount of bashing on this movie is unbelievable. And arguments they use... Either I'm crazy or they are. They say it is not funny enough for a comedy and I say it is not a comedy, so why would it have to be funny. They say that great actors gave lousy performances and I really cannot see that any of the actors failed to shine here. They say characters are two-dimensional, I say it's kind of fairy-tale, they are supposed to be kind of two-dimensional, and in my opinion, they are not anyway.
This is a beautiful drama, disguised in some sort of fairy-tale with elements of comedy and action movie, but it is a drama. It tells a story about human nature and friendship and it tells it in an amazing way. The cinematography here is excellent and stunning. It is a feast of colour and shape. And sound and music... hypnotizing and delightful. This movie is a feast for senses and it is more about how it tells the story than the story itself. If they cannot realize that, it's their loss. This is a work of art, not some cheap adrenaline injection.
Warm recommendation for those who have the ability to relax and enjoy, without overthinking unimportant details.

After a severe car accident, the girl in a coma has an out-of-body experience (astral projection) during which she observes people in her environment and remembers her life so far, trying to decide whether to wake up or let go.
The basic premise is, at least from the perspective of my experience, quite original, but the movie overall is not. However, although there are a lot of clichés, the story is very emotional and believable, and it is easy to identify with well-acted characters. Visually beautiful, with well-blended flashbacks (which I usually do not like) and pleasant music. Chloë Grace Moretz proves once again that she is not just a pretty face. Of the nearly forty of her films I've seen, this is one of her best performances, and as movies in general, only "Hugo," "Let Me In," and "The Poker House" left a stronger impression on me.

Argentinian "Tarantino" consists of six stories and was nominated for Oscar. The second and the fifth story are a bit below the level of the rest, but the rest is pure 10/10.
My only objection to this masterpiece craziness is that they wasted six fantastic ideas on an omnibus. Every single of these stories could have been developed further into an individual movie, so we could have six masterpieces instead of just one. Stories are completely unrelated, so there was no need to make the six-pack out of them. Pity.
Nonetheless, this movie blew my brains out. For 10/10 all six stories should be perfect, but two aren't, so

After the death of his parents and problems with the law, the young American randomly chooses Italy as a destination for a temporary escape from a gloomy life. There, he falls in love with a mysterious girl, who hides a primordial secret.
Labeling this film as a horror will lead you to the wrong expectations. It is a romantic drama with a Lovecraftian premise and atmosphere. The movie follows the development of the relationship between a young man and a young woman and the essential life decisions they have to make. The main feature of it is the spontaneity of their relationship and realistic dialogues, spiced with casual humor. The movie overall looks and develops naturally, as if we were watching footage from last year's summer vacation. The culmination brings more dramatic and quite creepy moments, but it doesn't make this movie even remotely horror, it only adds strength to a love story.
"Spring" is not for gentle sweethearts crying to romantic melodramas, nor for hardened horror fans. But if you have a little of both, and especially if you are a fan of Lovecraft's style, I warmly recommend this hidden gem.

"Sometimes the most thrilling thing a film can do is shake the shackles of its own preordained genre as you're watching it. The result might turn out to be a deal-breaking tonal trainwreck, but when such a hybrid works - and Spring, the second feature from directing team Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, does work - it can make for an improbably lovely experience." - Austin Chronicle - DirectorAlex GarlandStarsAlicia VikanderDomhnall GleesonOscar IsaacA young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.Maybe she's computer, but she's still a female :D

"Who Am I" is a German cyber-crime mindfuck thriller whose story I can not go into too much because of the risk of spoilers. The film is technically competent, the acting is good, the tempo and music will drive you and keep your attention without a problem. The story itself seems to be a classic seven, but multiple plot-twists at the very end have thrilled me. Through film permeate almost unnoticeable homages to a cult 'Fight Club', that will, if you notice them, lead you to assume the outcome of this story. You will guess wrong. Only before the very end I finally understood some seemingly insignificant details and solved the puzzle... again wrong. Now, after the second viewing, I'm not so enthusiastic as I was the first time, which is expected for mindfuck based on the unexpected twists and turns, but far from that I was bored and I enjoyed it from start to finish. The most sincere recommendation.
